Backstory

History

Raised by his parents Tokage and Mei Shokushi in the town of Kihei, Hawaii, Kakugo enjoyed a trouble free lifestyle whilst growing up. Like many other children his age, he was fascinated by the world of heroics and keenly watched the news for updates on the latest acts of heroism. However, Hawaii is a small collection of islands with few cities across the entire state. Villains were largely controlled by the police force and heroes were not needed there. Like many kids his age, Kakugo once dreamed of becoming a hero and fighting villains. This dream became more realistic as he grew up but he still maintained the wish to have a job where he could utilise his quirk to the fullest and be appreciated by people.

Growing up in a relatively small town on Maui, Kakugo attended the local schools. Whilst not exactly slow when it came to his studies, Kakugo never applied himself and so coasted through school only ever achieving average grades. He was never part of any clubs of extracurricular activities, preferring instead to spend his time after school on the beach.

Post Graduation

After graduating school with average qualifications, Kakugo had no plan for what he wanted to do next. His mother insisted he get a job and so he began searching for anything that was available. He struggled to find work before he was finally accepted as a bus driver. However, after driving to Kahului and back repeatedly almost every day for a year, Kakugo was bored out of his mind. He spent his days at work sat down and hardly moving with little or no contact with his co-workers. This setup didn’t suit him at all and Kakugo knew he had to leave.

It wasn’t long before he decided that a huge change was necessary or he would waste the rest of his life there. Inspired by the heroes he had intently watched on TV throughout his childhood, Kakugo wanted to find himself a job where he could fully utilise his quirk instead of it going to waste. Knowing he should make this fresh start in a major city, Kakugo made the decision to leave Hawaii behind and move to Japan with what little savings he had. His parents offered to support him but he didn’t want to put them out so he reassured them he would find a good job and make his own living when he got to Tokyo.

Present Day

Overview

Kakugo presntly lives a small 1K apartment in a rundown area of Saitama, Tokyo. The rent is cheap and he doesn’t have very many belongings so the small size suits him just fine. The apartment consists of a compact kitchenette, opposite a small bathroom. The entrance leads straight into the only other room in the apartment which is large enough for a single bed, a TV stand and a small table. The apartment also has a balcony so Kakugo is able to take in the sun rays whenever he wishes.

Not long after leaving his family home and traveling to Japan, Kakugo had ended up in financial trouble. Finding work in the city of Tokyo proved harder than he had expected and his savings eventually began to dry up. Desperate for work, he found himself making acquaintances with some unsavoury types which brought him into the thief business. Operating under the villain name “Jackson”, Kakugo became a well-known thief and cat burglar. He’s currently wanted by the police in relation to some high profile thefts. Kakugo is freelance, hired as and when needed by people who require him to steal something for them. It pays very well.

Not wanting to disappoint his parents or make them ashamed of him, he has lied to them and told them he has a job but not told them the details. Whenever they ask if they can visit, he quickly changes the subject. Despite the criminal aspect of his work, Kakugo enjoys being able to utilise his quirk to the full as a thief and finally being needed by others is a powerful motivator for him.

Family

Tokage Shokushi 色枝 蜥蜴

Tokage is Kakugo’s easygoing father. Much like his son, Tokage is laidback and optimistic about situations, even when his wife Mei becomes frustrated he can usually manage to calm her down without difficulty. Tokage works as a wildlife conservationist, something he’s incredibly passionate about. Tokage is a tall, slender man whose skin is covered in green scales. His face holds a lizard-like appearance and he also has a thick scaly tail. Apart from his non-human appearance and extendable tongue, Tokage doesn’t have any other specific quirk.

Tokage took a hands off approach to raising Kakugo which has resulted in his son becoming incredibly lazy. Because of this approach, the two never argued over anything as it was Mei who took responsibility of the discipline. Kakugo and his father have a friendly relationship and share a lot of the same interests. Tokage was always Kakugo’s confidant growing up. When Kakugo announced he was moving away from them, Tokage was the most supportive and encouraged him to get out there and see the world for himself. He also consoled his wife who was very upset to see their only son leave the nest.

Mei Shokushi 色枝 迷

Mei is Kakugo’s short-tempered mother. Whilst she cares deeply for both her husband and son, she often finds herself annoyed by their easy-going nature. She’s incredibly rational and will always choose the most practical answer to things, even if her emotions say otherwise. Mei doesn’t have a job but is active in her local community, particularly in organising events. Mei is several centimetres shorter than her lanky husband and has a plump body which never left her after giving birth. She wears glasses and has long, light green hair like her son. Mei is human in appearance and has a camouflage quirk which allows her to blend into her surroundings.

Being the homemaker, Mei did the majority of the work raising Kakugo. As such, her practical and reliable traits have been passed onto her only son. Mei can be tightly-wound and would sometimes argue with Kakugo when he didn’t do as she asked him to. He largely ignored her though. Mei loves both her husband and son dearly and only shouts at them because she cares so much. When Kakugo told her he was leaving for Japan, she initially told him he couldn’t go until she realised how selfish that was. Alongside her husband, she gave him a tearful goodbye at the airport.
