Standing 168cm tall, Hannes isn’t particularly tall but has a surprisingly strong build with. Though he has been on hormone replacement therapy for years and has since been able to further tweak his appearance with magic, his general shape still resembles an hourglass. He can be a tad insecure about his looks especially because of his inability to physically age past his early 20s, but for the most part Hannes is fine with the way he is. He has light top surgery scars (double incision) on his chest, mostly faded out but noticeable if you know they’re there.

He’s not particularly animated when he’s talking, and even when relaxed he might still come across as a little stiff. His voice is distinctly masculine, but he has a soft way of speaking and tends to speak higher when with new people.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

• As a keykeeper whose body has been temporarily fused with the key Vasker, Hannes has gained several abilities including a prolonged lifespan granted by the key he’s protecting. He has stopped aging physically at 20 when he fused with the key, and though it does give him a slight anxiety at times, he has mostly come to accept it by now.
  
  
• Vasker being a key of insight, Hannes can see through magical disguises and constructs created to deceive the viewer.
  
  
• His hidden magic has likewise been awakened by the key. Hannes specializes in the concept of “taking” or “pulling out” things that in normal circumstances would be “fixed” or “unmoving”. While this can easily be interpreted as moving the unmoving in relation to objects, Hannes can also draw out hidden magic from others as well as awaken dormant cores of magic and even bring out old genes - but whether this is safe or smart to do is another thing.
  
  
• Thanks to his hidden magic, Hannes is technically able to draw out his dormant demon blood and considerably boost up his magic as a result. However, because he can't control the extent of how much of it he draws out, this also causes disproportionately large wings to sprout out of his back. The first time Hannes tried this left him with a trauma and torn skin on his back, making him terrified of trying it again.
  
  
• Has a good memory when it comes to names and birthdays of other people
  
  
• His magical skills are mainly offense based, though often incompatible with his physical condition: for example his skill at using a flash of light to momentarily blind the opponent, but his light sensitivity makes him just as weak to the attack if he forgets to close his own eyes.
  
  
• Hannes can summon chains to restrict the movements of the opponent for a short while. However, as it requires Hannes to stay still, as if holding the chains, it leaves him vulnerable to attacks and as such is best used when fighting alongside others. 

TRIVIA

• Hannes prefers to present as a man in society and is fine with all masculine titles, including being referred to as a man. He began medically transitioning at fifteen with the full support of his parents, but has since become able to use magic to adjust his appearance and keep it the way he wishes to. He doesn’t really discuss his transgender history, but at the same time doesn’t feel uncomfortable with people knowing of it.
  
  
• Though not medically considered a true albino, Hannes has an extremely pale skin, is sensitive to light and his skin burns very easily. He has to cover himself properly every time he goes outside during the sunny seasons and is often seen wearing sunglasses - sometimes even indoors.
  
  
• Enjoys writing traitional letters to his friends and decorating them with various stickers, cutouts and pressed flowers. He used to read about flower symbolism a lot when he was younger, and while he doesn’t take it super seriously he does like to consider it when picking flowers for his friends.
  
  
• Hannes doesn’t read much fiction anymore given how his life is arguably more exciting, but he used to read a lot as a child and was very into horror and detective literature when growing up.
  
  
• He’s not as deeply into animation and comics as his friends Teru and Darian are, but he often enjoys watching series together with them and might even tag along when they go to a convention.
  
  
• Keeps track of his findings regarding what he learns of the demon realm and its inhabitants, and has the habit of approaching magic much like a scientist would. Whenever attempting a new spell, Hannes writes down all the steps that lead to the action and what follows. He often experiments on himself.
  
  
• Cyrus and Sage are his ancestors a few generations before him. Though Sage was the original source of magic in the family with their water-aligned core, they actually had light wielding relatives which explains Hannes’ own affinity with the element. 

PERSONALITY

Summary: A dutiful keykeeper, Hannes takes his job seriously and acts in a very polite and professional manner when dealing with those who come for his help. Though he manages to be social and talkative when needed, he’s a research-minded introvert motivated by his thirst for knowledge. He’s not always the greatest with too much attention though, and is ashamed of his nervous habit of becoming flirtatious.

More than aware of his duties and position as a keykeeper, Hannes is very reliable and diligent when it comes to conducting business: he’s very punctual, polite and speaks and behaves in a calm and clear manner when interacting on duty. While he can come across as stiff because of his extreme dedication, it’s still easy to see Hannes is very genuine about the things he says and does, even with the fact he’s overall not very eager to talk about himself.

Though social and easy to get along with, Hannes is rather introverted when out of duty and often more interested in studying magic than actually practicing it. He’s not necessarily shy or even particularly quiet, but his interests are generally quiet and require him working in silence in order to focus. He’s often criticised by human witches in particular for wasting his massive magical potential on studies and observation rather than using his own powers, but Hannes feels no need to prove himself: power is only a tool for him to reach his goals, and so he sees no reason in training beyond his own needs. Furthermore, to an extent Hannes fears the growing power could easily make him lose sight of what’s important to him, and so - to a degree - avoids using too much of it.

Despite trying his hardest at being responsible and dependable, Hannes isn’t necessarily the strongest leader type and usually doesn’t want to be the main center of attention: too much attention has the tendency of making him nervous, embarrassed and sometimes even scared. Added by the fact Hannes' instinctive response to nerve-wracking social situations is to get flirty, he isn't too keen on putting himself under the spotlight unless he must. Hannes prefers to do his own things in peace and doesn't really require anyone's attention for the things he does, though does appreciate it greatly when his efforts are acknowledged with a small thank you. That being said, with age and experience Hannes has started growing better into the shoes of a good leader, though it’s not his personal preference when group dynamics are considered.

Among friends Hannes is considerably more relaxed and much more talkative as well: he loves to share what he knows and generally enjoys learning more about people in the process. Though he’s usually the voice of reason to his more outgoing friends, Hannes is just as capable of throwing himself into new situations to the point he often finds himself tangled up in one mystery or another. He’s very curious and loves to do field work, be it investigating a paranormal phenomenon or adventuring through old ruins.

HISTORY

Summary: Though blessed with a core of magic, Hannes grew up completely unknown to the world of magic and the demon realm. His witch mother and demon researcher father did their best to keep it all a secret from him, but eventually had to come out clean when malicious demons would start to threaten their lives. This tension would eventually lead to Hannes losing his parents as a teenager, but he himself was saved by a keykeeper who would proceed to make Hannes her pupil. Since then Hannes has grown and matured, and wishes to keep his parents legacy alive as a now keykeeper himself.

Though born into a family deeply connected to the demon realm, Hannes spent the majority of his childhood completely unaware of it: knowing the dangers, his parents kept Hannes away from this information with the hopes he would never have to deal with them even when he would get older. Hiding this knowledge from Hannes was surprisingly easy, much of it thanks to the professions of his parents: with a librarian father and a security guard mother, it was convenient to explain the strange books and odd wounds and bruises with their respective lines of work. While his father was a born human whose work was more in line with information gathering, his mother was a witch whose magical skills originated from a demon ancestor.

However, because his parents were often busy with their double life, Hannes spent much of his childhood on his own, studying and reading to pass time. He would often stay with his maternal grandmother and father when his parents were away. Every once in a while his father would let him read a little bit of his demon research in secret, but would claim them to be books on the occult and nothing more than a mere curiosity. His mother would teach him self defense from a young age just in case anything ever happened to her or her husband, but would likewise mask this as a simple fun activity between a mother and child.

Hannes’ oversensitivity to light would begin to affect him when he started his puberty, and with his gender struggles surfacing around the same time Hannes distanced himself from his friends and peers. He was sad about the limitations his sensitivity would give him, and anxious about the dysphoria he did not quite understand at that age. He would initially confide to his grandmother about his feelings, and eventually gain the courage to talk about them with his parents as well. All his relatives reacted rather well to this, and Hannes had their full support since the start, even if some were not particularly knowledgeable of the matters of transgender people. After he became certain of his identity, Hannes was able to start treatments at age 15 with the permission of his parents.

Becoming a keykeeper

Not long after this, Hannes’ mother got in trouble with some malicious demons and had no other choice but to come clean to Hannes about the world of magic. Hannes was still young and his core still more than likely to work, and so she started teaching him how to use and control his own magic. Hannes took this surprisingly well, mostly because he had always expected his parents were dabbling with more than met the eye. However, although Hannes was highly compatible with light magic, he was very weak due the lack of practice before now.

Although his mother wanted to teach Hannes mainly self defense, it turned out Hannes skills worked better around offense and support rather than defense. They got to practice around a year together, but their home would eventually get raided and his parents lost their lives in this surprise attack. Hannes likewise would have lost his life had it not been for the keykeeper who came to save him just in time. This keykeeper, a demon herself, took Hannes in with her and made him her pupil. Most of this was mainly out of convenience: her time was running out and she had failed to find a pupil to pass her knowledge and key to, and so a youth with already established magical power was practically a blessing to her.

Hannes, though traumatized by the sudden and tragic death of his parents, agreed to work for her and decided to take over his parents’ legacy so that their deaths would not go to waste. He would juggle between school and keykeeper studies, losing most of his friendships in the process as he drifted away from them. While it did sadden him a great deal, Hannes found it more important to study and learn before his mentor would perish.

Hannes was given the key Vasker by his mentor at age 18, and soon after this she passed away peacefully. Hannes didn’t immediately fuse himself with the key though, instead keeping the key with him and getting more of his transition goals done: he was aware his physical body would cease to grow after the fusing, and so he waited two more years to mature - and would have waited more, but he knew keeping the key unfused was dangerous as it could be stolen.

The Vasker keeper

For his late teens and early twenties, Hannes still continued studying and majored in cultural anthropology in university. This was mostly so that he could still enjoy the little of his human life he had left, and to make friends while he still had the chance. Right after he became a keykeeper at 18 he met Teru, a shapeshifter around his own age who quickly became Hannes’ closest friend.

He would also meet the art major Darian and theater major Vincent while studying in university, quickly discovering both had close ties to the demon realm despite being born humans: Darian turned out to be connected to the demon of old, Damian, and Vincent in turn had been accidentally turned into a merman by the mermaid he had become friends with. Hannes, Teru, Vincent and Darian would spend their young adulthood as a tight knit group, having fun and finding themselves in the middle of various mysteries and conspiracies largely unintentionally.

Little by little Hannes would begin to disappear from human society and focus on his task as a keykeeper, traveling with his now life partner Teru around the world and the demon realm in search of ghost gates to seal. While he had no workshop of his own like the fellow keykeeper Karen he had become acquaintances with by then, Hannes would simply give the doors to Karen to keep if he himself was unable to seal them.

Currently:

Hannes and Teru are traveling together as Hannes carries out his duties, but as they’re still young they often return back to their home city to hang out with Vincent and Darian. Hannes has fallen out of the system of the human society and as such either uses forged papers or simply magic to get by, but he still participates in it to some extent and still lives in the human realm as opposed to the demon realm.
