The Independent are a collection of characters who only have one thing in common: they generally aren't connected to any of the seven other groupings. Some groups are related to each other, other are completely independent from others. If anything, The Independent serve as a miscellaneous category spanning across several factions, species, and peoples.
An initiative started out by Silas, the Expedition is a College-based mission to travel across the ocean and explore the hostile lands of Kestane in the west. The College-Guild conflict makes these lands highly unaccessible for most inhabitants from the east, and the added danger of the Guild's hatred for mages calls for vigilance. They pose under the identity of four scientists who are travelling around the world on a scientific quest.
But this isn't a political mission; the group aims to conduct scientific research in the west and find potential new materials to work with back at home. Kestane's isolation from the rest of the world made obtaining information on its natural resources hard, so a trip there is necessary should the College want a modern catalogue of the enemy's lands.
The leader of the group, Silas Daster, otherwise known as the Doctor. He's one of the two mages in the group, although his magic type isn't well known as he uses it very sparingly. He's also an excellent medic with much needed experience in the field.
He was the one who started it all, dragging the Alchemist with him and recruiting the two other members. He's a bit of a diplomat, but has a hard time keeping up with the Botanist's temper and is a bit too lenient on those who have endangered their group before.
Ellen Virschot, the Botanist, may be one of the most active members of the group, but he has the least privileges because of his personality and temper. He has a hard time getting along with others of the group and is more of a solitary member who often goes out on his own to gather plants.
He gets caught in regular verbal fights with the rest of the group, usually with the Doctor and the Alchemist, and has been seen as a catalyst to the group's destruction. He may be argumentative, but he never backs down from a verbal nor a physical fight or shows fear even to valid threats.
Lorenzo Gotlieb, also known as The Alchemist, joined the group primarily as a bodyguard to the Doctor and as an extension to the entire group. He's a laid-back, arguably lazy member who doesn't do much but sit around talking to anyone who's present at the moment and rarely actually helps out.
He's a cheerful guy looking to enrich people's senses in any way. He takes enjoyment out of nicknaming his friends and casual chatter, although he's less tolerant of dissent and can give out quite the knuckle sandwich if necessary. He's deeply protective of the Doctor and has been in fights with the Botanist.
Lucas Yunan, the Geologist, is the second of two mages in the Expedition. He had his past as a miner but wanted to use his earth magic in a more exciting way and joined the Expedition. Although he isn't a scientist, he's the best they could find, so they all just pretend he's a geologist.
He's a robust man with a strong personality and helps out the Doctor regularly with more administrative things. He doesn't let the group's drama get to him or involves himself into it, so he often ends up acting like a mediator or stays in the background.
Vincent is a mage who’s from demon Australia and was trained to be both a master life mage and a skilled surgeon back at home, and somewhere between moving away from home and now he started a gianormous organisation of surgeons and savants who break moral rules to advance scientific knowledge.
His organisation is absolutely hated. They were dubbed the wolves because no one had ever seen a kangaroo and Vinnie couldn’t change people’s terminology before the name was well known so he kept it that way. Wearing such a mask in public warrants being killed because of the group’s main practice: they carry out inhumane experiments on live people to discover new things about the demon body that couldn’t be found out post-mortem. They wear their mask to cover up their identity, and the uniform is deliberately the most generic version of a surgeon’s official outfit so that members remain anonymous.
Most of the recruitment is done by this guy. No one really knows who he is and most people who know he’s the pack leader don’t recall his face as he removes people’s ability to visualise him. He has the ability to detect people’s lies and when people are very calm he can even read their memories and dig through their brain. He researches recruits enormously to see if they’re useful and if he can use something he found to convince them to join.
He isn’t necessarily a bad person but he’s willing to disregard subjects’ feelings and mistreatment if it means they get closer to mapping out the body and its workings.
Alena is a traveling huntress searching for her younger sister she lost many years ago to finally bring her home again.
Born in an easy early life, war and the threat of the south's imperialistic dragons has driven her and her family away from their home several times over and made her lose her younger sister in the chaos. Unable to accept she was gone, she promised her mothers she would bring her back and travelled the country to find a sign of her and take her back home after so many years.
A kind and tolerant woman, Alena is proud of where she is in life and how she got there. She can still enjoy her life without her sister, even though it's a hard task thanks to the bond they shared. She's assured she'll one day march into her village with her sister again, and with the certainty that she's just a bit away from that one fatal clue believes her search is almost over.
Kraye's a ray of sunshine who unfortunately met her demise at age 16 under mysterious circumstances and who has ever since lived in Hell's habitable ring trying to regain her freedom.
Her life in a foster family was prematurely interrupted when she was murdered by someone she never managed to identify. Unable to escape her fate as a demon, she was trapped in Hell, only escaping torture because of her low amount of sins. Down there she met Tamara and quickly became her best friend, eventually an on-and-off lover.
Kraye yearns for her freedom and the ability to truly let her gentle personality shine through. Two attempts to escape her prison have failed, but she's determined to once again own her own body and soul.
Sasha is a Hell horse, one of the many creatures inhabiting the eternal plains, but one that is feared by many. Known to be aggressive to all they encounter, many stories tell of unfortunate souls who were dragged into the abyss by a Hell horse never to be seen again. People aren't sure if they are to believe the stories of Hell horses whose bodies were partially melded with unfortunate souls.
So it is a miracle that Kraye managed to befriend one of them. Devoid of their usual rage, Sasha simply did not attack her or anyone around her, and she managed to form somewhat of a bond with the animal. Even Hell's authorities are unsure why this has occurred, but are unable to remove Sasha from Kraye's possession out of fear of her rage.
Raeges has been many things in his life - a water mage, a criminal, a prisoner, but to most people he knew he was a replacement father figure where a real one wasn't around anymore. That isn't to say he was a good one; in the wartorn village of Cheriot criminal orphans without economic skill were no rare sight, and Raeges took full advantage of their existence to escape a certain death.
Getting by well with the use of tax evasion in his younger years, the local authorities found out about his crime and broke many of his fingers in torture, leaving his right hand completely useless and his left weakened. He spent three years in a cold jail cell unable to carry out labour with his deformed hands before he was released with an increased tax rate. Unable to provide for himself and facing a slow death, his only option was to take in some of the orphans to work for him and to receive slight tax reduction benefits for taking them off the streets. The strategy worked well but he did not care for the children more than he cared about money making tools.
Even with the extra help, his life became a harsh hell of barely getting by from one summer to the next one. It was hard to care about other people when there was nothing but this for the rest of his life, or death to look forward to.
Once a hearty strategist, Lux was the victim of soul experimentation that ended with his soul being grafted to his twin brother's. Unable to pass on, he has no choice but to search for his brother's help.
As children, him and his twin brother Nelor weren't very well liked for their pale hair and their red eyes. They grew up close and sheltered from most other children and developed an interest in war strategy. They ended up in the hands of an attacking dragon army, where there was an interest in the brothers' twinship and their interesting physical qualities. They were shipped off to the Draconic Mainlands and subjected to several tests, some unremarkable and psychological in nature, others of a more physical nature, and yet others of both.
Lux ended up not surviving the experimentation that followed, but was unable to move on as part of his soul had been grafted to Nelor's. Unable to convince his brother that it is time for both of them to move on, he is stuck in a loop where his only chance of alerting his brother of his existence is to torment him. Whether or not Lux still has a mind of his own, or if he's merely a manifestation of Nelor's subconscious projecting fear into the missing memories of Lux is unknown.
Definitely having seen better days, Nathan has been trapped in an ice cold dimension for thousands of years with no idea how to escape.
It all started when he was sent to the city to get some work ethic and to conquer his far too cheerful attitude and he was turned into a vampire. The local Nacedi captured him and threw him into the dimension that would be a death trap, but he ended up surviving the ordeal and turning mindless over the years he had to eat the victims that were thrown with him.
He grew into a symbol for the city but wasn't aware of it. It took until he found a mysterious artifact that warmed his body and grew back his muscle that he gained back some of his awareness.
Markus is a former sheep herder who was at the wrong place at the wrong time, then continued to make several more wrong decisions on his own spare time.
Originally born in a small village a regular demon, he always herded sheep and practiced his earth magic until the day he stumbled upon a box containing a large black pearl. He sold it to a travelling merchant and used his new riches to buy his darling dogbeast Mr. Snuggles and start travelling around, but was hunted down by the demon god Tomius, who cursed him by turning his legs into goat legs for losing track of an important artifact.
These days he is around Remco, an Ashen historian who was really interested in his legs and who convinced him to leave behind his life to go travel the world together. Though still not entirely used to his curse, having a friend opens up so many more possibilities in his life.
Remco is an explorer who wants to see the entire world and learn from the many different cultures he had only heard stories about. He's an eager man from a village where two warring cultures came together and made peace, and thus doesn't know conflict.
He has a fixation on history, trying to make people aware of how peaceful his and the Southerner race can be, but also being willing to study how everything went and to travel back to the lives of ancient ancestors.
He recruited Markus to join him on this extensive, life-changing journey, though it's not always appreciated by his friend. Remco wants to experience the world, even if he has no idea what the bad portions of history bring with them.
Florence is a young and inexperienced light mage who due to the unpopularity of his natural school hasn't been the most liked kid around town from a young age already and these days he's on his own hoping to find people who can use his skill. He's a rather cocky young man who likes a good fight, but because of his advantage he most often wins the fights he picks.
Despite the lack of interest in it from the people around it and even their fear of his light magic, Florence himself has always been captivated by its powers and effects on the people around him. He had the luck of unlocking his power when he was just a baby and could cast damaging light when he was age 6, even if it was just very minor damage. It was playing around for him back then, but thanks to his interest he had a pretty large head start on most children his age who wanted to do magic.
His magic is still very weak and is mostly used because people recognise it as light magic, not because It can do significant damage. Only in an outburst can he deal real damage, but at a cost. He aims to become better at magic and to find someone who appreciates it for what it's worth.
Henry is a cheerful but generally calm and collected sailor who's skilled in navigating ships using a variation of illusionary magic. He seeks the thrill of adventure and thoroughly enjoys the exploration part of sailing around the world, and in more recent years he he joined the crew of a pirate ship to reach an even broader more exotic area.
He used to be more for the simpler life, but when he was younger after he had given up his adventurous life to settle down to get married and have a child, he realised this simply wasn't for him and he hadn't seen enough of the world. He left behind his newborn daughter and his wife to work on cargo ships again, later on learning how to navigate a ship using life magic from one of his ships' main navigators.
These days he hangs around the unexplored isles south of Kenarii, making friends with the local elves.
Imke is King's elderly owner. She's owned King from when his coat was still entirely yellow and trained him all the way through getting entirely orange and eventually the red with darker red markings he has today. The two went a long way together and they have an unbreakable bond.
At the moment she manages a small farm secluded from the rest of the world. She has a young apprentice who works for her and in exchange gets to be her student. This young lad hopes to become her successor, but he still has a long way to go. He's training in the light school as one of the rare mages capable of focusing on it enough to bear through the severe burn wounds it gives him, but Imke's guidance makes these wounds more bearable.
Imke's powers are great enough to bring forth a cataclysm and destroy the world over the span of a few years if she put her mind to it, but she has no interest in doing this and is a benevolent woman. If she weren't as old as she was she would still travel the world to help out others, but lately her back has been giving out and she couldn't handle too much of the work. She still often travels the world to enforce peace if she can make it there. Her seclusion is very important as she needs her time to rest and be all alone.
Vanta is one of Imke's pets. She's a lowborn beast person, the result of an ancient spiritual merge that created hybrids between various animals, and is the result of feral wolves and dobermanns getting a second cross with humans or beings of similar intelligence. Her sapient blood is so weak it's barely noticeable outside of her increased social behaviour and she is far closer to an animal than to man.
The threeway cross grew her species to a giant size, easily towering over even the largest of men. She's a sociable sweetheart who only attacks on Imke's command, but has the tendency to inflict wounds due to her size and sometimes overexcitable nature. She may be used to handling an elderly lady like Imke and a tiny blind familiar like King, but she still is a highly energetic beast who towers over anyone she meets.
People have a tendency to be afraid of Vanta, even though she's only a threat to those who are a threat to others. She's as good as a lapdog and craves close social contact. She often guides King with her loud barking, giving the familiar a sound to run after.

Blaine is a hunter and a thief who lives on the Southerner part of the Kenarii Isles.
He makes his living traveling from place to place and stealing things - whether they be junk or significant items - and selling them wherever he goes next. He lives under the guise of being a traveling merchant and has managed to avoid long-term capture in the few years he's been doing this professionally. The moral side of the business is unimportant to him, in the end the merchants he steals from can easily survive with one less pearl while for him it may mean one more night of survival for him and his dog.
As the national animal of Kenarii is a dog, he befriended one of the wild corgis that can be found all over the isle and named him Jonathan. The animal follows him around wherever he goes and is a happy trusty companion to Blaine's travels. He'll gladly pass up a meal of his own if it means he can feed his dog and Jonathan's needs are only a small price to pay for him to have such a pleasant companion with him all the time.
Blaine has been an exquisite archer from when he was younger already and originally intended to join the Kenarii military to become a city guard, but after trying out the job and being utterly bored by it he decided to seek for more of a thrill and to resume the theft he used to commit when he was a child - only on a much bigger scale this time. He's satisfied with what it has to offer and it doesn't look like he'll change his ways anytime soon.

Alexi is an ancient familiar who was spawned when Damon's potential was locked away. As the spawn of such a dangerous and universally hated figure, he's seen quite the amount of torment and mistreatment, but his optimism is a great way to keep his now more careful excitement alive.
He's a very creative familiar, using the small amount of god powers bestowed upon him when born to create little things he can enjoy. Unlike his source he doesn't have evil inside of him, if that's at all possible for a familiar. He's unlike Damon in about every aspect but still has the fur colour that marks him as evil, and people have a hard time accepting this and often dismiss him as dangerous as a result.
It's currently unknown where he is.
Buteo is the head chef in Heaven working on the food served to the Inner Circle. He works with a large team of fellow chefs who make sure the food is of the best quality it can be.
