"Don't think about it, just do it. It's fun, I promise!"

Desdemona was born to honest, hardworking parents, and grew up under their expectation that she'd continue the family masonry business. Instead, she met and fell in love with, and eloped with an adventurous alpha cether who claimed to be bored of his gilded cage and filled her head with grand promises of worldly travels. His tune changed dramatically, however, upon her bearing his child. From the very moment her pregnancy was announced, Mona found herself locked within the very same gilded cage that her lover had so wistfully claimed to despise. But, unless she wanted to be shunned from both the father of her child and the entire support structure that his well-to-do family would provide, she had to fit herself into a world and culture that discriminated greatly against her own parentage.

Gone were the promises of adventure and gallivanting to distant lands. As a father-to-be, her husband fell into familial pressures to align himself neatly back into a role and reputation befitting of a nobleman, and aspire to maintain an air of decorum following the 'foolishness' that lead to him marrying and impregnating a lowly beta.
Desdemona loved her infant son, but deeply resented being regarded to as a nobleman's 'mistake'. Her husband's family wasn't shy about making their disapproval of his choice in partner known, as Mona found herself treated no differently than the midwives and serving staff. They would begrudgingly accept her son for his father's blood, but they would not accept her. If that wasn't insult enough, Mona was afforded minimal say over her own son's upbringing. So often, he would be whisked away from her to engage in some other organized activity of which she was not welcome to join in on.

She tried her very best to live with these arrangements. She tried for six years. One evening, she just couldn't anymore. A letter had arrived to her from her childhood friend living on the esoteric island of Kel Del. It wasn't the first letter Mona had received from her dear friend. Indeed, she and Hana had written back and forth to one another from the day Hana left to Kel Del during their youth, up until the very night Desdemona disappeared from her husband and son's life.

Hana, in her letters, frequently recounted her adventures abroad. It seemed that Kel Del was an island rife with adventure, riches, and otherworldly dangers. Mona had always tried to respond with news from home, and with great excitement about her elevated status as the wife to an alpha. She tried to offer Hana a rosy window into the world of the wealthy elite, one that was rarely afforded to the beta cether. In light of that, it must have seemed like a sudden shift in tone when Mona's very last letter to Hana was an exasperated confession about her tireless efforts to fit into a family culture that simply would never accept her.

The letter preceded her arrival into Kel Del, and Mona has never since looked back. Now days, she works beside Hana, scouting the ruins of Kel Del in search of old Jahkl tech and magical artifacts. The bounty of wealth she may occasionally come into on her exploits pales as a reward in comparison of the thrill of the adventure itself.
