Melody was hatched in an egg with another dragon, a very rare occurence which resulted in her being born deaf. In a tribe of dragons who revolved around music, this was exceedingly difficult, but she still tried her fullest to connect with her tribe. Although her condition made it virtually impossible for her to sing, she was still able to learn a variety of instruments, relying on her sense of rhythm and memorization of the notes to play songs, even when she couldn't actually hear them. She was also able to find ways to connect through her twin sister, Harmony, with whom she was extremely close. Together, the two of them studied and eventually taught themselves Tail Speak, as a means of communicating with each other and other dragons around them.

At the age of 13, she chose to leave her tribe, seeking out new land and building herself a new life. After months of traveling, she settled down in a forest inhabited by four other dragons. One of these dragons was Tempest, an irritable storm dragon. Tempest initally found Melody to be intolerable, but gradually warmed up to her.
