Personality

Contrary to what one might think, Adjo in life and Adjo in death are very much the same person. Those around him may see his serious, no-nonsense nature to be a result of the traumatic circumstances of his demise, but in fact that's merely his nature. Even as a teenager before his death, Adjo was a stern and earnest man who was considered humourless by his peers, not knowing how to lighten up or see the sense in wasting time making jokes. It's always left him a bit of an awkward companion, taking everything said to him at face value and addressing it with an earnest, thought-out response, even when it's not something that he'd be expected to take with such seriousness. It's almost comical how dour he is, but he's always been oblivious to the problem, he's just the kind of guy who simply doesn't understand the idea of being carefree and taking life easy sometimes, which can understandably irk others now and then.

As a result of this serious nature however, he's a fiercely dependable and reliable man, going above and beyond the call of duty in his hard work protecting and caring for those around him. True to his currently robotic appearance, he's always keen to act according to what he sees as the most logical and efficient means required to achieve his goal. If someone asks Adjo to do something, he does it without hesitation and to the very best of his ability in order to be of use to them and live up to the expectations he believes they put on him. As a former retainer, he finds comfort in being in the service of others, and admittedly has little ambition of his own.

Upon being restored to consciousness after centuries, he immediately pledges his loyalty to Terry, as a descendant of his master, and seeks to get right back to work as a retainer. The only goal he seems to have in his own interest is to exact revenge on those behind the demise of his master, in particular the fallen hero Sagittarius, a vendetta he can get dangerously absorbed in, sometimes endangering himself by relentlessly pushing his mechanical and physical limits beyond their limits, only standing down under a direct order to do so. He also has a bad tendency to project those he lost before death onto the people around him now, which just shows his inability to grieve further and stops him forming proper new relationships.

Having lived through a time before the Stellar Twelve became fallen heroes and took control of the world, Adjo has a wealth of knowledge long since lost to the rest of the world. In fact, he often underestimates just how significant his insight truly is, as he sometimes fails to fathom just how much has been covered up during his time in stasis, and will end up only bringing up certain facts when they're immediately relevant, leading him to be surprised at the shocked reaction of those around him. His centuries out of consciousness also leave a him a bit of a fish out of water when confronted with the changes of the modern world, particularly social attitudes. Occasionally it all gets a bit much for him and he actually begins to feel a bit self-conscious and uncomfortable, retreating into hiding under the excuse of guarding the Bandits' camp being a more efficient use of his service.

Abilities

Undead - Due to a malfunction in the Bronze Scarab's preservation systems, Adjo exists in a state between life and death.
  • Lightweight Due to much of his body having decayed, Adjo's body is incredibly light, giving him a surprising agility and speed when outside his powersuit. However, this can only be maintained for a short time before his body weakens and approaches death, forcing him back into the Scarab.

Bronze Scarab - Adjo pilots a large, mechanical powersuit.
  • Preservation System - Designed to keep Savarah's royals alive in times of danger, the Scarab's medical technology allows Adjo to stay alive despite his body's decay. Even if his real body takes damage, the system can assuredly restore him to his standard state given time.
  • Python System - The Scarab wraps Adjo in bandage-like cloth as part of its Preservation System. This cloth is also used as a weapon, dubbed the Python System. Excess cloth is deployed from the suit at Adjo's command and can be manipulated to grab and constrain targets. Though it can be spread out and used to entrap multiple foes, it is more effective when all of the cloth is focused on wrapping a single target.

Silver Osiris - A smaller powersuit with more agility, developed between Adjo and Kaishu using Sun-Sap.

Misc.

  • Adjo was originally intended to be Terry's ancestor rather than one of their servants.
  • His favourite food was melon, but he can no longer eat.

Background

Adjo was born to a servant family in the technologically-advanced desert kingdom, Savarah. His family was sworn to the service of Savarah's royal family, a benevolent branch of the Golden Clan, and as such Adjo was raised and educated to follow and serve them as his lineage dictated. Excelling due to his hard-working nature and intellect, wise beyond his years, Adjo was appointed to perform duties for the heir, Prince Meneses.

Despite their contrasting personalities, Adjo being a serious-minded servant and Meneses a light-hearted ruler, a deep trust was formed between the pair, the prince considering Adjo as a friend more than a servant, a sentiment he found illogical but treasured nonetheless. As Meneses prepared to take control of the kingdom, he personally appointed the reluctant Adjo as his closest adviser, a role he proved himself in with his wisdom and judgement.

Working hard in his position as royal adviser, Adjo became a well-respected figure, seen as the backbone of the more lax Prince Meneses' royal circle. Though completely loyal, Adjo did have several public disagreements with Meneses, often over matters which Adjo believed would be beneficial to the kingdom in the long-term but Meneses refused due to the short-term effects on his people.

Their heated arguments in the public eye, with Meneses' coronation approaching, led to unfounded rumour about a possible coup by the prince's servants. Adjo, the prince and the rest of their circle were aware of this speculation but underestimated how seriously it was being taken by people, who were gradually growing more unsettled by the idea. In fact, these rumours were being spread throughout the kingdom by actual plotters, those of the Stellar Twelve, who wished to lay ruin to Savarah to halt their technological advances which they perceived as a threat to the world's peace.

At the coronation of Meneses, the usurpers plans were put into action, and Adjo watched in helpless shock as his best friend was suddenly pierced through the heart with an arrow the moment he took the throne by the fallen hero Sagittarius. The bubbling turmoil underneath the kingdom's surface erupted instantly as the public saw this, riots breaking out across the kingdom as news of the assassination spread, with no confirmation of who was responsible.

Adjo, as one of few to have seen the killer, pursued him in a frenzy of rage, but was assaulted by authorities and the public under the assumption that he was a culprit. As he strugged and resisted, determined to exact vengeance on Sagittarius, his peers were publicly executed around him and the palace was set ablaze, the public turning on the royal family, their servants, and even each other as the kingdom began to sink into despair. The Stellar Twelve's forces arrived to fan these flames further and in just a few days Savarah was laid to ruin, its technology destroyed and its citizens slaughtered.

Adjo, clinging onto the last breaths of life, made his way beneath the ruins of the palace to a secret lab and entered a surviving stasis chamber, the preservative combat suit Bronze Scarab, which had been intended for Meneses in case of emergency, to escape death and live to seek revenge another day. Unbeknown to him however, the Bronze Scarab was malfunctioning due to damage done to the lab. Rather than preserve the last spark of life in him, he was mummified and entered an undead state. Additionally, the stasis he entered had no set expiration and so he lay dormant underground in the sarcophagus for twelve centuries, the Stellar Twelve taking control of the world and Savarah being all but forgotten in his absence.

Synopsis

It is only when the Beacon Bandits, researching the ruins for clues about the fallen heroes' past misdeeds, stumble upon the laboratory that he is reawakened. Unable to leave the mecha due to his decaying mummified body, Adjo surprises the Bandits by immediately pledging his allegiance to Terry, who the Scarab's scanners identify as a descendant of a lovechild of Meneses'. He is pleased to find that in his loyalty to his master's descendant, he has also joined their quest to put a stop to the Stellar Twelve, conveniently lining up with his centuries-old desire for revenge. Despite some initial hesitation on their part, the Beacon Bandits soon accept him as their seventh member.

Terry

Though Terry was completely unaware of his Savarah ancestry, Adjo is relentlessly forceful in getting him to accept the mummy as his servant. Regarding their master-and-servant roles, Terry is reluctant to accept them as he cannot comprehend such immediately intense loyalty being genuine, nor the fact that there's someone who's even more of a stick-in-the-mud than he is. Likewise, though Adjo exacts any order Terry gives to him and goes out of his way to be useful to him, he is guilty of projecting the memory of the late Meneses onto him. Both of these problems put a strain on their relationship, but over time Terry realises Adjo's loyalty is truly just in his nature and is grateful for his efforts, though stresses, like Meneses before him, that he'd rather be considered a friend than a master. Adjo meanwhile comes to respect his new master as his own person with different goals and motivations than those of his ancestor and eventually finds that his desire to help him achieve the peace he wishes to bring to the world is more important to him than seeking revenge.

Mary

Mary has an almost child-like fascination with Adjo due to how 'insanely cool' she finds his mecha and undead state to be. Seeing her serious-minded Terry as his master, Adjo interprets the more emotional Mary to be a logical adviser to him. Thus, considering his own relationship with Meneses, he sees himself in her, despite their starkly different characters, and is somewhat in denial about the intelligence she must possess as such that she truly just doesn't. As the two spend more time together, the girl clinging to his side in sheer awe, he comes to realise that her carefree and good-hearted nature actually remind him more of his late master than himself, and he grows a genuine affection for her friendship, which like with Meneses he treasures but refuses to admit. A particular instance of wanting to protect Mary from peril actually ends up being what first spurs Adjo to leave his preservation suit, despite the massive danger it posed to his own body.

Kaishu

Adjo and Kaishu get along fairly well, both glad to have a more serious-minded and rational companion amidst the more carefree and dramatic members of the Bandits. They often share knowledge with one another just for the joy of conversation, Kaishu educating Adjo about botany and his Sun-Sap, and the mummy returning the favour with his wisdom of ancient technology and history. Together the two sometimes combine their efforts to create new items utilising both Adjo's tech and Kaishu's Sun-Sap, which later leads to the creation of Adjo's Silver Osiris. They also share a kinship in that they are both still learning about the discoveries of the modern world and share their surprised reactions when confronted by something unknown to them.

Thaddeus

Thaddeus comically believes, as a member of the Golden Clan, Adjo should serve him as well as Terry, the idea of having a loyal servant to follow his commands filling him with a wicked excitement. However, Adjo breaks his heart at every instance, vocally labelling him as 'vulgar', and ends up hiding behind Terry like a child in his disgust. This leaves the hotheaded Thaddeus distraught and frustrated constantly, only serving to fuel his self-proclaimed rivalry with Terry, and this only worsens when Adjo is more than welcome to the idea of serving others like Ruby and Bianca. Despite this, he does reluctantly feel some obligation to him as a Golden Clan member, and often, when Thaddeus is desperately for praise, will relent and provide him with a backhanded compliment, all of which give the guy a moment of satisfaction before sinking in. Sometimes he'll push himself to act more like a servant and help by interrupting battles he sees Thaddeus to be at a disadvantage in, though of course as a battle-junkie he's ungrateful for this, creating further disdain between them.

Ruby

Ruby is initially intimidated by Adjo's massive frame, then petrified by the fact he's actually a mummified zombie. She continues to be somewhat scared of him as a result, despite thinking he's a perfectly nice and respectable fellow, and can't stand to be alone with him. He does not understand her fear regarding his undead status and unwittingly terrifies her even more in trying to interact with her. Due to her romance with Terry, he sees her as his master's consort and pledges to loyally serve and protect her just as he would him, which doesn't help matters really. However, on these occasions, her fears get alleviated momentarily as she feels embarrassed but nice being considered this in relation to Terry, and she'll spend the moment blushing and smiling instead of shaking and screaming.

Sagittarius

Sagittarius is the killer of Adjo's master and best friend, and thus the target of his desire for revenge. The mere sight of the fallen hero drives Adjo into an enraged frenzy and he will instantly launch an attack on him no matter the circumstances. Though completely outmatched, Adjo is relentless in his assaults on him and often ends up taking significant damage during their encounters. His rage is so blinding that only an order from Terry will get him to stand down and retreat, which proves a problem in situations where his master is absent. Sagittarius, not even initially remembering who he even is, has a twisted admiration for the intensity of Adjo's grudge against him, having not burned out a bit in twelve centuries. Arrogantly, he does not consider him a threat and actually finds a sick enjoyment in toying with him. Despite his usually stoic and brooding demeanour, when their battles get heated, he revels in the opportunity to arrogantly tease the mummy about the fall of Savarah and fuel his bloodlust further.
