“What happens when you lie about your age on social media”
❝ Das Traurigste an in der Vergangenheit feststecken ist, dass es keine Meme gibt... Es gibt doch nicht WLAN, was für ein Betrug! ❞
― Anselm von Werther

A promising engineer whose invention was the cause of his mysterious disappearance. The truth is that he is now stuck in the past, three centuries ago.

Anselm Werther (notice the absence of “von” - we will get back to it later) used to be a successful engineer from the 21st century. Indeed, he was the inventor of a powerful time travel machine. Even if he likes to joke around and was often seen as a party guy, he was also extremely dedicated to his projects.
It is worth mentioning that Professor Werther was a friend of Professor Sue, who he met when he was a German exchange student. While he was known for being passionate about technology and history, Anselm was also a multifandom guy and a meme lover. This helped the two nerdy teens to become friends. The extroverted Anselm often helped the shy young Manari during social events, in a way gentler manner that her brother would ever do. And, eventually, their relationship gradually evolved to be something more than friendship.
Even after their studies, Anselm and Manari stayed in touch. They were not as close as they once were, but they knew they would always be here for each other.

While Manari started to draw the plans of her robots, Anselm had another idea in mind: he wanted to build a time machine. And, not that surprisingly, he quickly succeeded, which made his name known in Germany, Europe, and beyond.
Anselm loved his popularity and his money, but more than anything, he loved his invention, and all the fun opportunities it created for him. At first, he travelled back in time for research purposes only. But soon, he started to do it for fun, more and more regularly. Doing selfies, pranking people, and bringing souvenirs for his friends and family.
…Until that fateful day, September 10, when his time machine crashed. In the 18th century.

Anselm was not prepared for this. At the beginning, he tried to repair it, but he quickly realized that he would never find the needed pieces in the past. After a few months of grieving, he knew that the only thing that was left for him to do was simple: to settle here and try to live a normal life.
Thankfully, Anselm is easily adaptable. He has somewhat got used to his new life, even if sometimes gets homesick. Maybe that's because he had to stay in the closet for several years, but Anselm knows how to sound convincing when it comes to lying about his past. The biggest lie he has ever told? Telling everyone that he his nobility, and adding “von” to his name. And it worked. Nobody will ever know. Because Anselm is not only persuading, he is also knowledgeable enough to know all of this works.
Speaking of which, Anselm has had medically transitioned. However, since hormone replacement therapy is not longer available for him, he was forced to stop and some changes seem to have regressed. This makes him afraid that it will raise some suspicions, but it is not enough to make him stop to have fun.

Anselm sometimes write letters to Manari, a bit like he would write a diary. He then buries said letters in nature afterwards, so he is sure no one would ever find them. He could never forget his long-time friend and former girlfriend. How could he? It is to her that his heart belongs. No other lady with raven hair and ivory skin could ever replace her.
Anselm also has kept a sun-powered camera, which he hides and uses to take pictures of what he finds interesting. Just in case he can come back one day… For now, he is presumed dead. After all, inventors killed by their own inventions are not that rare.

Additional facts

  • Anselm’s favourite fictional character is Prince Eli. He has used him as his avatar on many social websites when he was younger, and still uses him on some of his personal accounts.
  • He was also super into the Zelda timeline and game theories as a whole, a trait he shares with Manari. Same goes with metal music.
  • He had learnt to play the ocarina when he was in Gymnasium. He has however forgot how to.
  • He has always been known for being tall, and that's something he is pretty proud about. He uses shoe insoles to look even taller.
  • Anselm is an only child. Even though he moved to his own house several years ago, he still used to occasionally visit his parents, Amichai and Claudia. Even after his disappearance (and supposed death), his old room has been left as is.
  • Besides his naive language, German, Anselm is also fluent in both English (that’s just normal when you spend that much time on the Internet) and French (he wasn’t an exchange student in Manari’s town for nothing). He also has some bases in Japanese because of Manari’s weeby ramblings, but they are far from being enough to hold a conversation.
  • Anselm has met Raffaello, Olivier, Ismaël and Bobby during some of his travels. He is in good terms with them… except for Ismaël.
  • He wears a blue coat/jacket and yellow pants no matter the period he goes to, unless said time period doesn't allow it.
  • He has already printed an existing partition, went back to the past, met its original composer and gave it to them so the piece has never been written by anyone. He has also done the same with books. Temporal paradoxes are fun and he has created too many to count.
  • Before getting stuck in the Holy Roman Empire, Anselm was not particularly vocal about the fact he's trans, but it was no secret either. He considers it's just the kind of detail that ends up being known when you are a celebrity. He also used to regularly browse r/traa.
  • Anselm’s first name is pretty dated, but he chose it because of his interest in history. It also has the same first two letters as his deadname, and didn't want to do a dramatic change. In retrospect, he is relieved he has chosen this name, because a more modern one would have felt out of place in his current situation.
  • Anselm himself is very surprised by this, but nowadays, he sometimes goes outdoors and daydreams lying on grass. It calms him down, and he doesn’t have to maintain his “noble” persona when he is alone in nature.
  • He is probably still slightly in love with Manari despite the fact that they broke up in good terms, and will never be able to really move on.
  • Due to personal reasons, he hates caramel with a burning passion.

  • Vanilla milkshakes; “You have to admit that there’s no better feeling than drinking your favourite thing after a long, tiring day. For me, it’s milkshakes. I don’t know what I would do if something would prevent me to drink one again.”
  • Fashion; “What are you talking about? I’m not into fashion that much. I just like knowing what to wear… And historical fashion is interesting too! If only I could wear my favourite outfits in everyday life!”
  • Anime & video game cons; “Put me into a cosplay and I become a weeb again. That’s just how I work. Let Manari go with me and it’s even worse. Adulthood didn’t stop up, it made us stronger.”
  • Pistols & guns; “I just like the aesthetic of them. Eh. Stop thinking about morbid things already.

  • Engineering school; “Come on, I don’t hate it. It was just a lot of work. Had I known, maybe I would have chosen something less pressuring. But it’s over now. I'm free!”
  • Reading & writing; “I have to admit they’re not my favourite things in the world... But I swear I could resort to them if there is no other alternative.”
  • Moroni; “Stop saying I hate stuff when it is not the case at all! I have nothing against Moroni, I’m sure he’s a good man… He’s just… a bit intimidating, and pretty overprotective over his sis, you see? But anyone who enjoys Christmas markets is fine in my book.”
  • “Seriously. There isn’t that much stuff I dislike besides the obvious. Stop trying.”
  • “Wait! No! I remember! There’s something I dislike! It’s when someone makes fun of my last name! What do you mean, everyone does too?”
