Name Ailbhe
Age 20
Birthday January 1st
Gender Male
Height 120cm
Race Lyn
Class Blade Dancer

"I wish it would snow . . ."

Ailbhe is an albino Lyn with skin as pale as parchment and deep red eyes. As the result of an incident several years ago, Ailbhe’s eyes were left scarred and permanently damaged. Ailbhe is blind in both his left and his right eye and so relies heavily on his long ears to help guide him. As a result, Ailbhe’s eyes are heavily scarred and the skin of his eyelids is puckered and pink. He is able to open his eyes but as he can see nothing with them he prefers to keep his eyelids closed for comfort. If others stare or make comment on his disability then Ailbhe takes no notice of them.

The Lyn race are not known for their height and Ailbhe is no different, only slightly taller than average in this regard. His body is lean but not especially muscular and there is some excess body fat around his hips which refuse to budge even with his training.

Ailbhe has soft and fluffy snow white hair which sticks out at odd angles. It is medium length, just reaching his shoulders and he prefers to tie it up in a short ponytail at the nape of his neck. Much like his white hair, Ailbhe’s ears and tail are also a silvery white. His twin ears stand tall on his head with fluffy tufts at the base and his long tail is as fluffy and untameable as the hair on his head.

Personality

  • Compassionate
  • Intuitive
  • Adaptable
  • Airy
  • Lazy
  • Insecure

Ailbhe possesses a rare kind of sleepy laziness that grants him the ability to nap anywhere at anytime. Here, his closed eyes come in useful and he uses them to his advantage to slip into slumber undetected. He can be described as a little scatterbrained at times but this does not diminish his compassionate heart. With great patience for all living beings, Ailbhe has a naturally caring personality.

Using his quick mind, Ailbhe is able to adapt to any situation with ease. This adaptability was a major factor in his recovery after the sudden loss of his vision and continues to be a useful trait in his daily life. Although Ailbhe can be considered airy, he also possesses a great intuition that benefits him greatly in all aspects. His casual attitude is opposed by his deep-running insecurity. Possibly stemming from when he lost is vision, Ailbhe still holds onto a fear of loneliness. He hides this very well as it doesn’t affect his day to day life but every now and then the nagging fear that he’ll be alone indefinitely still creeps into his mind and upsets him.

Coming from a cold climate, Ailbhe doesn’t like to feel too warm and hot weather is always difficult for him to manage. He looks forward to snow as it reminds him of his home village. Ailbhe also dislikes big cities, which he finds too loud and complicated to navigate, and crowds of people who jostle about without a care for anyone but themselves. Ailbhe’s biggest fear is linked to what gave him the puckered pink scars on his eyelids — Fire. Even the crackle of burning wood can spook him unless he knows it’s in a safe place such as a fire pit. He guards this phobia very closely and prevents others from finding out for worry of their reaction; be it ridicule or pity, Ailbhe does not want to be treated differently based on something he cannot help but fear.

A favourite comforting food for Ailbhe are gyeongju cakes. He has fond memories of baking them with his mother and can’t resist buying some of the sweet treats if he spots them on sale at a bakery. Another treat which Ailbhe affords himself is spiced ale. He used to drink the warm drink often when living in the Silverfrost Mountains and still allows himself a drink at a local tavern when he has the opportunity. Whilst he doesn’t drink to get drunk, Ailbhe is a very “happy drunk” who laughs loudly and sings offkey to brighten everyone’s mood.

Skills & Abilities

Introduced to the ways of the sword some time after being adopted by his Master, Ailbhe began his training as a Blade Dancer. Despite his initial aptitude for speed, the lessons were difficult. Ailbhe’s loss of vision was an incredible handicap which felt like too much of an obstacle to overcome. His Master read his frustration and suggested he give up entirely if he’s unable to improve but warned him that he will have no way to defend himself or those he holds dear. By giving Ailbhe an ultimatum, his motivation was reignited and he began to focus on what he can hear and smell, rather than trying to see what he cannot.

This new approach to the blade resulted in Ailbhe developing his own unique techniques and fighting style which focuses on agility and the senses. Under his Master’s guidance, Ailbhe honed his senses until he was able to “see without eyes”. This is undeniably his biggest asset in battle.

Acute Senses
Having lost his sense of sight, Ailbhe honed his other senses to make up for the lost one. When he focuses, he’s able to hear sound up to half a mile away.

Wind Magic
Alongside quick sword attacks, Ailbhe has a grasp of basic wind magic. He casts spells to increase his speed and lighten the weight of his weapon whilst fighting.

Enhanced Speed
Ailbhe is nimble on his feet. What he lacks in sheer power, he more than makes up with his agility with the blade.

Weak Defence
Although nimble, Ailbhe has very poor defence. However, he counters his defensive failings with his speed, avoiding damage in battle almost entirely.

Biography

Ailbhe was born to Pyotr and Vera in Snowshoe Village, a hidden away settlement within the Silverfrost Mountains. The weather is always below freezing in this mountainous region and so Ailbhe grew up with a tolerance to both the chill air and the perpetual snow that blankets the land. Ailbhe lived a happy life and grew up with his proud parents where his only aspiration was to follow in his father’s footsteps and become an ore miner. However, this was soon to come crashing down.

In the dead of winter, not long after Ailbhe’s sixth birthday, Snowmelt Village was set ablaze by Cináed the Hanje-Yong (한제용). The ruthless attack by the great Cryo-Drake was indiscriminate and seemingly unprovoked. Dragons such as Cináed are not usually seen within the mountainous terrain of Snowshoe Village and so the inhabitants were caught completely unprepared by the assault. The fatalities were enormous for such a small village.

In the mayhem caused by Cináed, six year old Ailbhe was separated from his parents when he became trapped in a burning building. As the flames weakened the wooden structure, Ailbhe fell from the third floor and his vision went black. He awoke several hours later in a makeshift tent for those wounded during the dragon attack. Around his head was a thick white bandage, covering his eyes and impeding his vision. He panicked and sobbed for his mother until a doctor came and explained that his parents had been lost and his vision might never return.

At that moment, Ailbhe’s world had turned quite literally black. With no home to go back to, Ailbhe joined the many other children who had been orphaned by the dragon in a poorly-funded shelter that couldn’t afford to look after so many children. Thankfully, Ailbhe was one of the lucky ones.

After spending a mere week at the shelter, Ailbhe caught the sharp eye of a wealthy widowed Jin who hastily adopted him. The elderly Lady Morana had taken pity on Ailbhe after hearing how he lost both his parents and his vision in the attack. She made him feel at home in her modest lodgings before promising to teach him to “see without his eyes”.

In the coming years, Lady Morana nurtured Ailbhe as if he was her own son and proudly taught him how to picture his surroundings using his other senses. Among more academic studies such as ancient literature, Morana also instructed Ailbhe on the correct usage of a sword and developed his skills as a Blade Dancer both defensively and offensively. Ailbhe owes a lot to Lady Morana and is eternally thankful to her most of all for her kindness and compassion.

At present, Ailbhe is on a quest suggested by Lady Morana which she claimed will completely clear his debt to her. The task is to locate a sacred item and bring it back for her. To begin with, Ailbhe was dubious that one single request can be so important to his master but is still set on completing to please her. However, what Lady Morana is demanding might make Ailbhe more enemies than friends.

Trivia
