Shaia is a third-generation Japanese-American "blessed" woman that uses she/her pronouns. A member of the campus LGBTQIA+ Alliance and proud performer in the university's fencing club, to say that Shaia likes to keep herself busy is an understatement. When she's not knee-deep in coursework, classes, and extracurriculars, the remainder of her time is spent with her appointed bestie, whom she faithfully followed over from high school.
Shaia's family, herself included, is all in possession of the same, unique "blessing"-- the ability to use their life energy, or "spirit," to sense the spirits of other creatures, as well as manifest said spirit in the form of a "dragon" to defend themselves and others with. This power is treated with respect by her family, who, through their close, loving relationships and good habits, work to continuously uplift one another to achieve their spiritual best. This has fostered the perfect environment for Shaia's health and allowed her to soar to new heights indefinitely, making her a powerful fountain of energy and strength, with the unfortunate side effect of appearing terrifying to those who aren't part of her inner circle.
An unexpected reported death in the family prompts Shaia to take leave from her studies for a few weeks while she goes to pay her respects. But... Something doesn't seem right as she arrives at the location for the vigil. A deep-seated feeling of dread unlike anything she has ever experienced washes over her, as she realizes the forest towering over her, where her family is due to meet, is alive.

Character
Playstyle: Mid-range offense/poking
As a hobbyist fencer, Shaia focuses predominantly on picking how to attack with her projected soul without leaving herself open to counter-attack or punishment. Most of her special moves feature her using her draconic soul as a means to increase her range. She will attack the opponent from a distance until she can get to her optimal range, which is just outside of her opponent's reach, so she can force them to commit to a punishable attack in an attempt to stop her offense.
Shaia's most obvious strength is the multitude of angles she can send her soul to attack her opponents, such as from above or even from behind them. These attacks are not counted as projectiles and as such do not interact with them, but they can be attacked by a foe's outstretched normal attacks and special moves, damaging Shaia in the process. But this does not mean projectiles immediately shut down her offense, because she has multiple moves that destroy opposing projectiles. She has a short-range projectile of her own that does not travel, but is sizeable and prevents incoming attacks handily, as well as a parry that beats fireballs and physical attacks both.
Of course, any poor choices made by Shaia have very clear weaknesses for her opponents to exploit. Her projected soul is vulnerable when it is sent out to attack, and damage taken will add up quickly. She also only has one attack that reaches fullscreen, and using it puts her at greater risk of entering "Exert" state. Entering "Exert" state will prevent her from using some of her "Force" special moves that she otherwise relies on for an extended period of time compared to other characters, and the super move she gains in "Exert" state is similarly weak. She needs to consistently balance her use of her strongest tools in the neutral game, lest she find herself at a disadvantage and have to work from behind.
