Personality

Mortimer the most no-nonsense person you’ll ever meet. She doesn’t waffle around the subject, she’ll just step in and get the job done. She’s always to the point and efficient. She also does not tolerate it when others try to beat around the bush. If you’re going to talk to her, you’d better get right to the point or else

Mortimer is also a scientist by nature. If something goes wrong, she’ll try it again and again to figure out why it did that (unless it caused actual problems). It’s not uncommon to find her in the back room of her shop making and remaking potions to get them right. Mortimer isn’t super concerned about the end result, she just enjoys the process.

As a parent, Mortimer is a very strict person. It’s not out of cruelty or meanness. She just believes that structure is good for teaching. She’s not a mean person in any capacity. In fact, she’ll listen to people and take constructive criticism. Mortimer doesn’t like being an utter dictator, so she never is.

Despite all this, Mortimer can and will have fun. She’s especially fond of wordplay and riddles. Sometimes, she’ll even make purchasing her wares more difficult by making people solve riddles for her. It’s fun to watch them struggle, and she doesn’t like to give hints. She considers that cheating, and she hates cheating.

Mortimer operates by a strict moral code. However, almost nobody knows what the hell that code is, and she’s not about to share. Mortimer is a very private person after all. She’s very quiet about the things she believes and makes an effort to not share anything about her personal life to anyone at all. Plus, she likes the air of unpredictability it brings.

Design Notes

  • Mortimer has an equine form that she can shift into at will.
  • Mortimer can summon a light-based horn from her gemstone in order to perform magic.
  • Mortimer can often be found with herb pieces all over her body.
  • Mortimer likes to wear dresses with poofy sleeves and is almost never found without her pointy hat.

Trivia

  • Mortimer is almost never seen without her black cat Eclipse, who is her familiar.
  • The “Witches” of the Golden Isles are able to manipulate some element of the background radiation to do their bidding. Mortimer is able to do that with herbs.
  • Mortimer has a little herbalism shop that allows her to have enough money to live off of. However, it’s not exactly open on a regular schedule.
  • Due to her experimentation with magic, Mortimer has had her lifespan expanded by 20 years barring any unfortunate accidents.
  • Mortimer has a collection of moon-shaped jewelry. Some people think it’s for magic purposes, but in actuality it’s just because she likes the moon. Interestingly, both of her daughters have moon markings. She’s not sure why.

History

Before Mortimer was born, everyone was sure that she was going to be a boy. Her parents were set on the name Mortimer and refused to change it, even when their child was born a girl. Mortimer is fine with that - it adds to her air of mystique.

Mortimer’s family was not a family of witches, although they were aware of them. Therefore, it was a shock to them when she started manifesting extra powers as a child. She’d spend hours messing with the plans and making them do things - all without using her auracorn magic.

Her parents were stunned by this. At first, they tried to stamp it out. When it wouldn’t go away, they finally gave in and apprenticed her to witches. Mortimer finally thrived. All the other witches were astounded by her abilities and nurtured her greatly. She moved in with them as soon as she was of legal age to do so.

After she completed her training at age 21, Mortimer was dragged with some friends to go see a pop show. It wasn’t exactly her thing, and she was mostly there as transportation. However, her gaze caught on the main performer and dear lord, she was in love. Unfortunately for her though, the performer, Annalise, liked her too.

After the show, Annalise managed to talk to Mortimer. They hit it off right away, fell in love, and got married after a whirlwind romance. Annalise even convinced Mortimer to have a kid with her.

Things were fine for a while. However, Annalise’s busy schedule left Mortimer alone far too often. And then, Mortimer discovered that Annalise was at least a century older than she claimed and also had an adult kid. This led to a messy divorce, and Mortimer got the baby, a young Anubis.

Now thoroughly embittered to romance, Mortimer set about raising her daughter. From a young age, Anubis had demonstrated the abilities of a witch, albeit with food and not plants. Mortimer therefore decided to take her daughter on as an apprentice.

Anubis was a diligent learner, and was all too soon ready to become a full witch. Mortimer was a very proud mother and mentor, even if she didn’t really want Anubis to go off on her own. Alas, children must always go off on their own and become their own people.

And then the unexpected happened: Mortimer fell in love.

A regular customer, Kaia, had been hanging around for years and years. She’d become friendly with Mortimer, enough so that Mortimer made time for her outside of work. Although Kaia was busy, she’d always find the time to show up.

It took Mortimer a while to figure out what her feelings were, but as soon as she’d figured that out she immediately told Kaia, and the two of them had a good long discussion about relationships and things. Mortimer wanted everyone to be open and honest, and Kaia totally agreed.

After Anubis gave her blessing, Mortimer and Kaia were married and moved in within the year. They became a super domestic couple and were super adorable together.

Thanatos was a complete accident. Neither of them were looking for more kids, and Mortimer was a little too old to be pregnant. However, both Mortimer and Kaia doted on their daughter, even if her witchy tendencies are leading her down a dark path...

Kaia Lovers

God, Mortimer just absolutely adores Kaia. She’s so brilliant, so creative, and so fun! They’re such a sappy domestic couple, the kind you can’t help but idolize. They have a very open and honest relationships, so any actual fights are super rare. And yeah, maybe Mortimer is also a bit fond of Kaia’s money. However, that’s secondary to Kaia herself, who is basically an angel.

Anubis Child

Mortimer is so proud of Anubis. She’s just such a smart, talented young lady with a brilliant future ahead of her. Mortimer would do anything to nurture that little flame. To be honest, she wishes she could keep Anubis by her side for the rest of her life. Alas, Anubis is her own person now, even if she does idolize her mom. They’re still on extremely great terms.

Thanatos Child

While Mortimer is pleased that Thanatos is also a witch, she is incredibly concerned for her daughter. Despite the wonderful and cozy life Thanatos has had with her parents, she’s been going off the deep end in some incredibly concerning ways. Unfortunately, Mortimer isn’t in a place where she can intervene and it sucks. A lot.

Annalise Ex-Wife

Mortimer isn’t angry with Annalise. Not anymore at least. Now she’s just tired and would like to never have anything to do with her ever again. Mortimer is pretty sure Annalise feels pretty ashamed for what she did, so Mortimer isn’t going to push it.

Persephone Friend

Mortimer and Persephone are actually pretty good friends. When Persephone was younger, Mortimer helped her get on her feet. They’ve stayed in contact ever since. Mortimer enjoys going to Persephone’s shows. Plus, she always gets VIP tickets. She’s offered to help out with the theatre ghost, but both Persephone and her wife Taz have declined.
