Chiffon is an adult male drake who lives in Terpsce Forest. After casting a faulty immortality spell and dying around 3,000 years ago in the Buried Kingdoms, his Soul remained intact in the world, leaving him as a sort of ghost—he no longer has a physical form but casts an illusion to make it appear as if he does.

Appearance

Chiffon is a large feathered drake with a color scheme consisting almost entirely of yellow. He has a rather lanky frame, and his silhouette is marked by many sharp spikes and angles. Atop his head, he has two curved horns that are shaped like simple antlers, reminiscent of crescent moons. He has large, expressive ears, striking blue eyes with white slit pupils, a forked tongue, and a toothy grin. Three long feathers extend from his cheeks. He has a long, curved neck, which is very fluffy near his head and consists mostly of a deep yellow. Shortly above his shoulders begins a large patch of more lightly-colored feathers, which is marked by many yellow rings and spots. Along his back, he has a mane of longer yellow feathers. On each of his front talons, Chiffon has only three digits—one of which is a thumb. He has long, thin claws on each. On his hind legs, he has talons that are more reminiscent of paws. His tail is very long and thin and is tipped with a large tuft of yellow feathers. Unlike the rest of his palette, his eyes are a light blue—much like the disembodied eyes that are often seen nearby him.

Although they are not a feature he possessed while he was living, he occasionally includes two pairs of wings in the illusion he casts of himself as a ghost. The foremost and upper pair is large with three digits each—one of which is a thumb—and features several shades of yellow, as well as white on the ventral sides. The further and lower pair is much smaller, has only two digits each—one of which is, again, a thumb—and is slightly deeper in color. The ventral sides of both pairs of wings are lighter than their dorsal sides. The purposes for which he casts this additional illusion are most often either to appear less jarring to those around him while 'flying' or to seem closer in appearance to the deceased prince he is mistaken for.

Design Notes

  • He has big ears!
  • His horns should generally be drawn in one curve (they're like antlers; they sprout from two places on his head, not four), but stylistic interpretation is allowed.
  • His front talons have three long, clawed digits (one being a thumb) while his back talons are more paw-like.
  • The disembodied eyes he's often drawn with are a part of his design but are optional to draw!

Personality

Naturally, living alone as an outcasted ghost in an abandoned mansion for thousands of years is bound to have a profound effect on one's character, and Chiffon's state of mind reflects his story well. His long-term isolation and state of self have lastingly affected his personality and behavior. His immortality and skill in the field of magic, in the extended absence of other mages, have been key factors in the development of his now very large ego. He possesses an unhealthy amount of hubris and constantly seeks to be the center of attention. Typically, this ends up being in a negative light, although he has grown used to this after thousands of years and now finds it to be a normal and expected reaction to himself and his actions. Instead of seeking out mutual friendships, Chiffon finds the majority of his entertainment through showing off to, taunting, or scaring those he believes are lesser than him—which is just about everyone. While he never truly means any harm, his attention-seeking tendencies often cause him to be destructive, as he believes negative attention is the only attention he is capable of bringing to himself and seeks it out. While his morals may be questionable, and he is not above exploiting the fear of others for his own entertainment, he does not find joy in causing others meaningful, tangible harm. His 'pranks' are intended to be short-lived and mostly harmless—just enough to get the locals to tell spooky ghost stories about him.

History

In the Buried Kingdoms

While he lived mortally in the Buried Kingdoms, Chiffon was well-known and respected for his impressive feats of magic. He was not necessarily the best of the best—finding himself below dozens in his own kingdom and hundreds from the others—but his work garnered the attention of many common folk in his own kingdom—enough to hold frequent performances and give a good number of lectures to those learning. As an artist and performer, his main focus and point of interest was in illusion magic—visually impressive, but causing no lasting tangible effects. Although he appreciated the attention this got him, the praise that resulted was short-lived, and he desired to be known for something more meaningful. In an effort to gain the status he so desperately sought, he eventually took upon himself a larger project, hoping to achieve a feat of magic no one ever had before: immortality. Chiffon threw himself into the research required for such an ambitious project, spending nearly all of his time alone working on it. When the time came, he failed to cast the spell correctly, unbeknownst to him. Attempting to test the immortality he was so confident he had achieved resulted in the death of his physical body, although his collective Soul—that which granted him consciousness in his mortal life—remained intact and separate afterward, leaving him as, essentially, a ghost. It was not long after his death that the corruption became widespread and the Buried Kingdoms were abandoned, and he moved to the surface with the rest of its citizens.

On the Surface

After moving to the surface, Chiffon began to search for a new purpose in life, seeing as he'd be around for the rest of eternity. Using the illusion magic he was so skilled at, he began using an illusion to project a lifelike image of himself wherever he went, allowing him to appear like a normal, living person to those around him. Instead of seeking out a new 'normal' life with friends he knew he'd outlive, Chiffon eventually chose to isolate himself in an abandoned mansion in Terpsce Forest. He entertained himself for a long time with nothing but music, magic, and painting. One magic skill he took it upon himself to learn in his free time was electrokinesis—a gimmick he'd later come to be known for. After growing bored of the few hobbies he'd relied on for a few hundred years, Chiffon finally attempted to make an appearance to the other residents of the forest. Unbeknownst to Chiffon, there was a story well-known by the residents claiming that a lonely once-prince of the Buried Kingdoms inhabited the mansion many years ago, who bitterly turned away all visitors and hoarded his wealth until he died alone within its walls. Upon appearing to them, the residents of the forest speculated that Chiffon, who apparently bore a resemblance to this prince, was somehow his Soul, which had lived on after death out of spite. Some reacted fearfully while others acted with hatred. Out of anger for their rejection of his attempt to make peaceful contact (and sheer boredom), Chiffon accepted their idea of him and chose to 'haunt' their forest under the guise of this prince for the rest of the foreseeable future—both to get back at them and simply entertain himself. He does this in the form of creating various elaborate haunted house-like illusions to confuse and strike fear into his victims, which fuels his ego. Lightning, fog, and masses of disembodied eyes are some of the gimmicks he's most well-known for, and he has since been dubbed "the Lightning Prince" by the forest's inhabitants for his antics.

Abilities

Skillset

  • Piano Proficiency: Chiffon is able to play the piano very well. He can play rather complex songs and has even composed some of his own music. This is a skill he picked up during his time on the surface.
  • Artistic Ability: Chiffon has some experience with artistic mediums, primarily painting. This is a skill he picked up during his time on the surface.
  • Theatre Experience: In his time alive, theatre was a hobby Chiffon found himself participating in often in his free time. He is very interested and skilled in the medium, which has well-complimented his illusionist skills. Since his death and subsequent isolation, collaborative theatre has been one of the things Chiffon has missed most about his life in the Buried Kingdoms.

Learned Abilities

  • Illusion Magic: Chiffon can create and manipulate illusions. These illusions can look, sound, and smell fully real if performed well enough, but cannot physically touch or truly affect their surroundings.
  • Telekinesis: Chiffon is able to control and manipulate objects and other matter with his mind. Objects that are larger or further away from him require more effort to control. Controlled objects typically glow softly blue with surrounding magic, but this can be counteracted with illusions. Combining this with illusionist magic—which cannot otherwise physically move or affect objects—can make for a very convincing trick, but requires effort and coordination.
  • Electrokinesis: Chiffon can create and manipulate electricity. His powers are amplified in the presence of high amounts of electricity, such as during thunderstorms.

Trivia

  • In canon, he is responsible for the cultural concept of ghosts. It was only after he began spooking the residents of the forest that tales of Souls sticking around after their bodies' deaths to haunt others became commonplace.
  • Chiffon went through several different backstories before landing on his current one. Previously, he was a 'god of mischief'-type character who held little significance in the story.
