Species

Common Name: Threadbeast
Accurate Name: Homunculus
Status: Closed
Creator: Ishliayaq

Threadbeasts are a form of homunculi built up of excess air particles. Any sort of floating particle you can see in a sunbeam is used to weave their rope-like core and the blanket of their outer skin. They are often compared to living dolls, as their being is often fabric-like to the touch. Threadbests are created by Spiders, women who carry the gene allowing them to weave these homunculi from thin air. Threadbests must rely on Spiders to help them repair broken threads or add additional threads to their body as they age.

Threadbests' sentience is derrived from memories of humans encoded on their core. The memories do not necessarily be formed from one person, and each homunculus also often contains memories of the Spider that created them, instructing them on how to form functioning senses.

In order to move, most Threadbeasts find the focus required to manipulate all their threads at once too distracting and instead rely on a tendon system. They wrap multiple strands around each other to serve as a "tendon" for each limb, giving them a full range of motion with less attention to their movements.

Like all homunculi, Threadbeasts are unable to feel emotions aside from those already present within the memories in their core. This causes them to become less and less human-like as they age, both in personality and physical appearance. Most settle on a quadrupedal form as it offers enhanced balance and agility over that of a bipedal form. Even for those that choose to keep a humanoid shape, their features become less and less defined as they age and as the Threadbeast's humanity fades. This is rarely a conscious choice.

The core of a Threadbeast has a pull, almost like a gravitational pull, on other threads around them. The older the core, the greater pull on those around it. Because of this, it is unwise, if not deadly, for two Threadbeasts to be in proximity, as the older may absorb the younger, intentionally or otherwise.

Physically, Threadbeasts are fairly fragile. While they are able to shift broken threads or reknot them, the threads snap easily and must then be repaired or replaced by a Spider. The threads that make up their bodies are also exceptionally flammable and any exposure to open flame will most likely result in the homunculus being burned into nothing. Threadbeasts are unable to feel pain, nor do they need to breathe or eat or drink.

OOC

Date of Creation: September, 2007

Snipe is easily one of my characters that has changed the most, which tracks with his age in comparison as well. While I did make characters before him, none of them have stuck around nearly as long. His concept as a Threadbeast started with his inception but then I made him a werewolf for a while for some reason, but then I made him a Threadbeast again when I got bored of that. He's remained one since, though he's shifted from blue to tan.

He was once a part of a very large world with dozens of characters for which he was originally created for, but as the other members of that world and I drifted away, I decided to hang on to him and make him something new instead of letting him go like the vast majority of the other characters from that setting. He is, in a way, almost a mascot character of mine.

He's not as much a character that I write or roleplay as he is one I explore. Character studies are really interesting with Threadbeasts and he's no exception.
