🌕Backstory🌕

Lives from about 1810 to 1880ish

Was a troublemaker as a teenager. The type to talk big words and make big boasts then get into fistfights because of it.

Had a very rocky relationship with one of his cousins. They're family, but will fight and argue over anything. So when Holden accidentally shoots and kills him while they are out hunting together, a lot of people in the town they live in find it hard to believe it was an accident. Holden only avoids going to prison due to his family insisting he genuinely did not mean to do it. He still winds up going to prison at 22 after being repeatedly falsely accused of theft. Gets out at 27, goes home just to say goodbye to his family, and then leaves for good. Hasn't been in contact with them since. He is too afraid that his past troubles will find him again if he does

Spends his 30s slowly working his way across the country going from job to job. Has a string of bad luck in his late 30s that results in him being out of money, lost between towns in the middle of winter with a dead horse. Happens upon a house that is owned by an old man. The old man takes mercy on him and let's Holden stay. The old man is nothing but kind to him, but Holden gets increasingly upset with how the old man talks about how good his life has been. After 3 weeks of staying with the old man, Holden snaps and kills him in a fit of jealous anger that is followed immediately by immense guilt. Holden never forgives himself for said action and firmly believes that it has marked him as a bad man and condemned him to damnation.

Eventually finds himself in a town called Plaskett. By chance, he gets a job as a bookkeeper and decides to try to stay.

Works as a bookkeeper for an auction house and writes penny novels on the side. Said novels are varyingly good, nothing really great though. (Novels would have been lost to time if his son didn't become an acclaimed author himself and actively tried to preserve his father's work)

Married with two children, a daughter and a son

Is very tight-lipped about his past even with his wife.

Spends the entirety of his life trying to do good as a means to make up for the murder that he committed.
