Biography
During her youth, several decades ago, Lady Morana went by the name of Marzanna. She was once a powerful Soul Fighter with both immense physical prowess and a strong command over all of the elements. Marzanna believed herself to be untouchable and allowed herself to become consumed by the certainty that she was undefeatable and destined for greatness.
At the peak of her power, Marzanna plotted to use her immense magic to overthrow the peaceful King and take control of the Kingdom, forcing its citizens under her reign and creating a new regime which would serve her desires. However, before she could kill the King, an unlikely hero stepped forth and challenged Marzanna to a dual. After a fierce battle, the hero was able to overpower the Soul Fighter but was unable to kill Marzanna. Taking pity on the weakened woman, the hero banished her to the Silverfrost Mountains.
Weakened by the battle and with very little magic left, Marzanna was still not prepared to abandon her dreams of power and control. Unable to do little else, she took on the name “Lady Morana” and began her extensive research on how to regain her powers.
After thirty years of living like a hermit, Lady Morana discovered what she was searching for; an ancient artefact known as the XXX Arc. This item, when combined with the blood of the hero who struck her down, would return her lost powers and allow her to regain her true form once more. However, the Arc had not been mentioned in any texts for over a century and Lady Morana was currently far too frail to go searching for the lost artefact alone.
It was merely by chance that she got word of the disaster that had occurred in Snowshoe Village but in an instant she was inspired to conjure a carefully constructed plan. Lady Morana visited the overcrowded village orphanage and set about the task of selecting a child which she would raise to seek out the Arc. Some of the children were stocky but slow, some bright but weak. Morana almost gave up hope of finding a suitable child entirely when she caught sight of a small Lyn boy running with the other children. Despite his heavily-bandaged face, he was swift on his feet and had no fear of falling even without his vision.
Lady Morana adopted Ailbhe immediately and brought him back to her small cottage in the mountains. Here, she carefully raised the boy as her own son, nurtured his abilities and taught him the ways of the blade. Young Ailbhe looked up to Lady Morana and loved her like a mother but she felt nothing for him in return, seeing him merely as a tool for her to one day regain her lost powers.
When Ailbhe reached twenty years of age, his kind nature caused him to request a way to lay Lady Morana back for caring for him. Unbeknownst to him, this was all part of her plan and she inconspicuously suggested that he seek out a lost treasure for her. Only after retrieving this item can Ailbhe consider his debt to her to be repaid. The naïve boy trusted her completely and isn’t able to see her for who she truly is.
At present, Lady Morana awaits news from her ward as he continues to search for the XXX Arc.
Trivia
- The inspiration for Marzanna comes from the Slavic goddess of the same name who is associated with wnter and death.
- Morana is another name for Marzanna.
- I originally created Lady Morana purely as a plot device for Ailbhe but she's grown into her own character.
