I have a few different versions of this character: Mahariel, Lavellan, and non-canon Inquisition companion. In all cases he's a Dalish warrior who's spent his adult life defending his clan from bandits, nobles, chevaliers, templars, etc etc. His clan has a higher than usual number of mages (im ignoring the "only three" rule babey) so they get more attention from templars than most clans. He's a skilled sword and shield warrior who focuses on defending his lesser armed teammates, and with his clan was used to being the tank and the most armed/strongest fighter, with most of the rest of his clan being archers and mages.

He's not particularly charismatic or persuasive. He manages to be pretty intimidating despite his size, just for the fact that he isn't the slightest bit afraid of threats by humans, but some of them find this little elf swinging a big sword and walking around like he owns the place just hilarious, at least until he starts chopping heads.

He's very skilled at navigating the wilderness, telling direction by the sun or stars and seeing breaks in the land that would make travelling easier, but he gets completely turned around in human cities, and finds most human buildings (particularly chantries or expensive estate-type places) very uncomfortable to be in.

He thinks of city elves as his brothers and sisters just as much as other Dalish, and several members of his clan originally came from the cities. He's never actually been in an alienage himself, as he does his best to avoid even small towns, and was never one of the ones his clan sent on the rare occasions that they traded with humans.

He's distrustful and wary of humans, and hasn't had any reason to interact with them beyond defending his clan. Thinks of any human approaching the clan as a threat, and any information revealed about the clan to be a potential weakness they may exploit, so he is secretive almost to a fault around humans.
