Azrail doesn't remember the life he lived before he became an angel, but he must've done a terrible job to end up this way. He doesn't remember his mortal name or the rest of his life, but he knows that he was born during the Age of Renaissance.

He's almost like a grim reaper - he's always on earth and taking people to the afterlife when their time has come. He meets millions of people each day and watches them leave seconds after he's just introduced himself as well as telling them what's going on.

The only time Azrail made an exception was for a woman named Alexandra. She'd been at the top of his list for quite a while, though her time of death never came. She was resting in a hospital bed when he appeared to her, but her soul hadn't left her body yet and she still remained as a kalon. This was a miracle to Azrail, and he visited her every night after he'd completed his duties. They got to know each other more. Over a short time, they fell in love with each other despite all odds against them. He considered her to be his soulmate.

However, her end came quicker than Azrail thought. Alexandra had been terminally ill and passed away after the few weeks of meeting her, only to greet her again when she was a spirit.

He regrets not thinking of something else to do other than sending her away forever.
