- The Mists
Awakened in the Cycle of Night, Vardise has always had an affinity for the night. In particular, their interest has focused on the night sky, which they saw in great detail in their Dream. Being one of the earlier sylvari to emerge from the Pale Tree, they did not have the guidance that younger saplings do now, and so did not truly understand their Dream's meaning or importance.
At first, they considered seeking the help of the asura, who were supposedly the most knowledgeable about the cosmos. However, they were put off by the asura's lack of ethics and empathy, as evidenced by their treatment of Firstborn Malomedies. Instead, they opted to learn on their own, a journey that eventually landed them in the Mists.
No one knows what happened to Vardise in the Mists – they've never spoken to anyone about what they've seen – but it was easy to tell that something had changed about them. Though they were still easily identifiable as sylvari, their appearance had changed drasticly. Parts of their bark became nebulae-like in appearance and they glowed constantly instead of only at night. Those who are particularly attuned to magic attest to sensing ambient magic constantly leaking from Vardise.
Their prolonged journey into the Mists had caused them to miss many important events on Tyria, including the awakening and subsequent demise of Mordremoth. Their unfamiliarity with the current geopolitical state of the world has caused no small amount of trouble for them, particularly with those who still distrust sylvari. This dissociation between the world as they remembered it and the world as it currently is has caused Vardise to retreat into the Mists once again, only coming out periodically when requested. What they're doing out there is anyone's guess.
Vardise swings their greataxe like an executioner. While the attacks are relatively slow, they can cripple foes and cause heavy bleeding if they manage to hit foes.
Shadowy hands created by Vardise's accumulated magic and life force erupts from the ground to restrain foes. Immobolizes and slows.
Vardise fires a mass of concentrated magic in the form of a galaxy towards an area. Chills and poisons. Does extra damage if targets are stationary.
Vardise enters their reaper shroud form and begins siphoning magic from nearby sources. Converts nearby foes' buffs into debuffs and heals Vardise based on the amount of magic siphoned. May cause fear.
The foe is enveloped by a thin layer of unstable magic, making it easier and more likely for them to take damage. Applies vulnerability.
Vardise's outfits are rather strange, looking like they were not made anywhere on Tyria.
- White and black skin-tight outfit that covers almost their entire body
- Sparkling silk scarf wrapped around their torso and waist
- No shoes!!
A strange item that Vardise found in the Mists, which acts as their primary weapon. It has the texture of metallic ley-stone and shares similar properties to Vardise themself, mainly the nebulae-like appearance and constant emission of magical energy.
Vardise always carries a copy of Tyria's star charts with them. This particular copy is somewhat outdated, not reflecting the deaths of Zhaitan and Mordremoth.
A purchase from a local sylvari tailor that matches Vardise's appearance. The silk is a semi-opaque black with reflective silver particles dotted across the fabric.
A one-of-a-kind journal made by Ieieran as a gift to Vardise. Its once-blank pages are now jam-packed with notes, reminders, and small doodles.
A pendant that Vardise found while wandering the Mists. There are no clues as to who its owner is, but it appears to have been well-worn.
Ieieran had been Vardise's closest friend before they entered the Mists. As Vardise became more obsessed with chasing their Dream, they began to pursue their dream with single-minded devotion, leaving Ieieran by the wayside. They entered the Mists without even telling him, disappearing for close to a decade.
Nowadays, Vardise and Ieieran are practically strangers to one another. Vardise still hasn't gathered up the courage to find out what happened to him, let alone have a conversation with him.
A strange creature of the Mists, sylvari in form but not in mind. Vardise found them journeying in the Mists, searching for answers that couldn't be found. A strangely observant individual, who seems to focus on too much on the details without seeing the big picture.
Reluctantly, Vardise has taken Saesyll under their wing. They're not sure they can help Saesyll, but they'll try their hardest.
