History: Taegan Martin was born in Indianapolis, Indiana in 2043. She was a prodigy in math and science and excelled at school, earning a scholarship to CIT to study computer science. She moved to Boston to attend school and stayed after graduating for work.

She lived in Boston for almost six years before meeting Jebb Stout, a lifeguard and former soldier. After dating for four years, the two of them got married and moved to Sanctuary Hills, a suburb outside of Concord. About two years later, their son Shaun was born.

On the morning of October 23, 2077, there was a knock on the door. Taegan answered to find a representative from Vault-Tec on the other side.

The representative explained that, because of Jebb’s veteran status, their family had been selected to have a spot in the local Vault, Vault 111. At first, Taegan wanted to reject the offer, thinking it some kind of scam, but Jebb encouraged her to accept, so—somewhat reluctantly—she signed.

Very shortly after, they got the announcement that nuclear warheads had been launched and they needed to get to the Vault immediately. The timing was a bit eerie.

But they didn’t have time to think about that, and the Stouts—Taegan, Jebb, and baby Shaun, safe in Jebb’s arm’s—fled to the Vault.

Once in the Vault, they were instructed to step inside “decontamination chambers” before progressing further into the Vault. Still reeling with the shock of nukes actually falling, nobody questioned it, and everybody stepped into the pods. However, these “decontamination chambers” were a lie on Vault-Tec’s part, and the residents of Vault 111 were cryogenically frozen.

An undetermined amount of time later, the Stout family’s pods unfroze. Taegan still could not open her pod and watched as Conrad Kellogg shot Jebb and took off with baby Shaun. Taegan was refrozen.

Again, an undetermined amount of time passed, and Taegan’s pod unfroze again and she was able to release the hatch this time. Stumbling out of her pod, she quickly glanced around the cryo room and determined that she was the only person left alive. She knew that she had to find Shaun, but nobody was left alive to help her.

Or so she thought.

When she exited the Vault, she saw Codsworth, the Mr. Handy robot she had purchased to help take care of Shaun back in 2077. Codsworth informed her that it had been 210 years since the war and the year was now 2287.

She decided to bring Codsworth with her on her journey to find Shaun, and the two of them traveled all over the Commonwealth—Concord, Diamond City, Goodneighbor—in search of Shaun. She found and confronted Kellogg in Fort Hagen and ended up having to kill him.

Taegan ended up making a lot of mostly empty promises in hopes of persuading people to help her find her son and accumulated a long list of IOU’s, some of which she still has yet to deliver on.

Finally, her search led her to the Institute, where she finally reunited Shaun. She was dismayed to discover that sixty years had passed between when Shaun was taken from Vault 111 and when she thawed for the second time.

Shaun was even older than she was now, and people called him “Father.” He served as the Director of the Institute, a scientific institution that specialized in making extremely humanoid robots—synths.

Taegan was even more distraught to discover that Shaun was dying of cancer. She finally found her son, and she didn’t have much longer with him.

However, while traveling the Commonwealth, Taegan was never able to find a place where she felt like she truly belonged. There wasn’t much room in the wasteland for a woman who was good at programming and scientific theory, and very little else.

She decided to stay with the Institute so that she could spend as much time with Shaun as possible and also have somewhere where her computer science background might actually be put to use.

Shaun announced that he would be making her the new Director of the Institute after his passing, and while she was surprised at first, she was determined to do her best in the new role. She was also a little bit excited for the new position because she was already seeing things in the Institute that she didn’t like. For example, how nobody used any of their resources to try and find a cure for Shaun’s disease, even though they had plenty of resources to spare.

She befriended Lawrence Higgs, who held views similar to her own. Higgs didn’t think the Institute should rely so much on synths, lest they get lazy, and many of the resources they were using on the synth program could easily be directed towards something more productive, like treating diseases. Higgs did protest Shaun’s choice to make Taegan the Director at first, but after she convinced him that she would make every effort to improve the Institute instead of doing the same old, same old, he quickly jumped down and became one of her biggest supporters.

Taegan hopes to use the Institute to build a brighter future for the entire Commonwealth.

But first, she’s got quite a lot of IOU’s to catch up on...
