Merle adores Halloween. This is no coincidence, considering it was the day on which he was created.
A witch had been sitting by her cauldron one Halloween day and thinking about how best to cause mayhem. She didn’t want to cause said mayhem herself – because then she might get caught, and also because she was rather lazy. So she said a magic spell and created Merle to do all the mayhem for her. It was absolutely brilliant! Merle loved it. Even when it wasn’t Halloween there was so much fun to be had, so many pranks to pull off.
His hat… well, that often caused problems. He loved his hat, he really did, but it developed a bad habit of wandering off. Often he’d look up, see that his hat was no longer floating above his head, and then he’d have to search for it for a good twenty minutes.
One day he happened to be in a villiage and saw a very colorful fox. He planned a prank on him, but it turned out that he'd been planning on pranking him! Merle ended up becoming very good friends with Lumiere.
That was quite the shock! Lumiere had been the first to approach him and – well, one thing led to another, and Merle discovered they were surprisingly similar.
So nowadays you can find the two pranksters wandering anywhere they like, having lots of fun, and being amazing best friends.
