Profile

Doctor Ethel Ashdown

gFLssed.png
  • Name Ethel Ashdown
  • Age 32
  • Species Human
  • Gender Female
  • Occupation Medical doctor, with some forays into physiology and organic chemistry.
  • Physical description

Tall for a woman, with thin limbs and a pale complexion. She hides her blemishes and eyebags with a layer of discreetly applied powder, trying to make it look natural enough to give the impression of not wearing any makeup. Doctor Ashdown’s hair is naturally mousey brown, but dyed a few tones darker and generally worn in a tight bundle at the top of her head. Her clothes are modest and most often of a gray or dark brown color.

When given time to prepare Dr. Ashdown would pack with her a doctor’s case containing amongst other things a stethoscope, morphine and opium tincture, calomel, syrups and bottles, a pair of scissors, a dosage spoon, some bandages, an apron and a clunky transportable flashlight that has to be wound up in order to work (think a doctor’s pen light, but made of brass and with a dynamo). Even without her doctor’s bag Dr. Ashdown habitually carries a tiny flask of brandy with herself.

  • Personality and beliefs

To her patients doctor Ashdown gives her best to exhibit an air of no-nonsense calmness. She is, however, suspectible to „catching the vapours“ both after taking her medicine and being without it for more than a few days. She shows little interest in the opposite gender, having managed to stay single thanks to a relatively steady income and a lack of parental pressure to marry. Doctor Ashdown exhibits some disregard towards her own safety in pursuit of knowledge, being willing to ingest substances out of curiosity or experiment on herself in the lack of more suitable guinea pigs.

Although she denies believing in such silly things as „the supernatural“ the woman is convinced that the human body and mind hide a lot more than modern science gives it credit for, accepting the existence of a number of phenomenons that would make most skeptics drop their monocles.

  • Skills She has an alright grasp on latin due to her area of education, being able to understand the general gist of written texts especially if they contain medical terminology.
  • Backstory

Ethel was the youngest amongst three siblings and grew up mainly in her family’s country house in Surrey. Her father had been a hospital-consultant, who heavily encouraged his sons to take up a career path in the field of medicine. Two of her brothers did try, though one of them never got his degree. The second one shot his way through medical school, becoming a psychiatrist in London. As for Ethel, she, too, tried to put her education to good use. At first the girl attempted to learn midwifery, however that was interrupted by the sudden death of her parents due to an outbreak of cholera. After a period of grief Ethel decided to return to her studies, but suddenly found the prospect of midwifery incredibly unfulfilling. With the patronage of her brother, who payd for her tuition with money allocated from his inheritance, Ethel attended the London School of Medicine for Women. Around that time the girl first developed an interest towards certain fringe sciences, such as auras, levitation or poltergeists, oddly enough not regarding them as being supernatural but rather an undiscovered field of science, the manifestations of a power from within a person.

She has worked in multiple establishments since graduation, but gotten let go each time due to „attitude problems“, spending the time in-between jobhunting working as her brother’s assistant. Dr. Ashdown started doing her own projects regarding "revealing" extrasensory abilities. Although her brother had payd her way through medicine school he made it clear that he would not be funding the woman’s research, so she set out to find new sponsors. That quest brought Doctor Ashdown eventually to The Curious Intellectuals, Individuals, and Scholars' Club (aka. the starting point of the cancelled roleplay).

  • Addictions?

Dr. Ashdown liberally prescribes herself laudanum against stress, migraine, disturbing dreams, insomnia, stomach cramps, nausea, the chills, anxiety...
