Profile

(WIP.)

Family: Back in Obsand, he has a younger brother and both sets of grandparents.  However, since immigrating to Statica, he lives on his own in a tiny apartment in a tiny town.

Bio: Dino is an earthen immigrant living in Statica who meets Vinna in the worst possible way--he accidentally collides with her while evading an attack from a wild, magical bird, coincidentally throwing them both into the local portal during routine calibration, sending them hurtling toward destination unknown.  Now being in the middle of nowhere with a girl he doesn’t know (who’s also very mad at him)…he has to quickly explain himself to Vinna if they ever hope to work together to get back home.

Vinna soon learns that Dino is actually inflicted with the legendary helbrum curse, which takes over when he gets too angry.  In Earth terms, it's similar to a werewolf.  In folklore, the curse is used as punishment for a great misdeed, usually alongside exile.  If his power is abused, Dino runs a real risk of entirely going feral one day, as each transformation comes with a mental and physical cost.  This only sets Vinna more on edge around him; he's a nice enough guy when he's not being cagey, but he has a long way to go to win her trust.

Extra:

  • He is the OTHER main character, but unlike Vinna, he is nowhere near being an everyman, thanks to his curse.
  • "Dino" is his full legal name (and it's pronounced Dee-no).  Earthen names are just like that.  His brother's name is Ector.  They haven't spoken in a while.
  • His left arm has already permanently succumbed to the curse, so he hides it however he can.
Below is spoiler info, divided into sections that correlate with other characters, since these profiles also work as a story summary.

Advised reading, but not necessary for understanding: Victoria (no spoilers), Reeve (no spoilers), Kurzec (no spoilers)

Thanks to Kurzec's guidance, the two finally find a roof over their head in Shim-Dewrias.  While they can finally rest up and relax, Vinna doesn't hesitate in interrogating Dino about his unique condition.  She can't trust him fully until she knows why he has the curse he bears.  Dino tries to explain as best as he can...

Back when he lived in Obsand, he always wanted to try his hand at magic.  Magic in Rixile is intensive to learn and hard to find education for specifically, barring most access to it for all but the privileged few.  Being from a low-class family in the middle of nowhere, Dino's chances to get any formal magic training were slim.  However, his village of Ano Ori's local treasure was a blessed charm that could be used to command animals, something the earthen goddess Terra was said to be able to do.  That sounds like magic enough, so Dino, being the cocky teen he was at the time...stole it.

Dino tries to end the story there, figuring that the crime sounds bad enough, but Vinna needles him for more information, not entirely satisfied with his answer.  A curse doesn't seem like equivalent punishment for theft, even if it was a special local heirloom.  He reluctantly continues his story, elaborating that the charm summoned a bear with fire magic to their town--magical fauna are a rare sight in Rixile indeed, and are known to cause destruction due to their wild nature.  Dino accidentally caused great harm to his small hometown in an attempt to show off, and was cursed and exiled for it.

That sounds like a more reasonable explanation to Vinna, and she lays off.  She inquires about why he ran into her in the first place; he was being chased by a magical bird then too, right?  Dino says yes, thanks to the helbrum curse, animals in general act hostile toward him, as if symbolic of Terra's scorn.  He wasn't doing any weird magic then, he promises!  It was simply a stroke of bad luck, encountering something that would otherwise be considered legendary and awe inspiring...only for it to start chasing him instead.

Vinna warms up to him more as a traveling companion thanks to this conversation.  They'll probably be able to get back to Statica with minimal trouble.
