Profile

(WIP.)

Family: Illia comes from a tiny village where she considers everyone her friends and family.  More immediately, she lives with her parents, her grandfather, three huge dogs, and two cats.

Bio: Illia Carena Darl Nikta Nova is an icend with a lot of buzz surrounding her.  She's a female icend born with horns (typically a male trait)–which, to the icends, is an indication of Cryos’ presence, since Cryos also fits that description.  Rumor of her existence spread quickly, and she was labeled Cryos' prophet by Quartan media.  This was all overwhelming to her family, since they've known nothing but sleepy village living for as far back as they can remember, but it was not unwelcome.  Illia was raised with the best magic and spiritual training Quartanto had to offer.

When Vinna and Dino head north through Boretia, they come across her by coincidence…at least seemingly so at first.  Illia was headed down to Aervrin on a pilgrimage, but then claimed to have seen Vinna and Dino in her dreams, and thus they MUST be important to something.  What that something is, she doesn't know, she's still just a teenager after all!  When she hears out their current situation, she agrees to join them for a while, since helping with a global crisis and getting stranded folks back home are just things a prophet should be doing!

She’s initially hesitant around Cavanaugh’s presence due to recent Pyrese/Quartan wars…but they warm up to each other.  Cav's a guard, not a soldier, and Illia tells herself she should keep an open mind as someone who wants to be a diplomat.

Extra:

  • While she tries to help people as best as she can, sometimes she really just wants a break.  It’s a lot of pressure for a kid!
  • "Carena Darl Nikta" is Quartan for "she who blesses us."
Below is spoiler info, divided into sections that correlate with other characters, since these profiles also work as a story summary.

Recommended reading: Vinna (no spoilers), Dino (up to 1st spoiler section), Cavanaugh (up to 1st spoiler section)
Advised reading, but not necessary for understanding: Kurzec (no spoilers)

Illia silently heard out Cavanaugh's personal insecurities, as the conversation mostly focused on Vinna and Dino's current predicament, but she was intensely ruminating on the new information all the while.  She decides to pull Cavanaugh aside later that night.  She tells Cav of the visions she had previously, specifically of Vinna and Dino...she didn't see Cavanaugh at all.  It's true, Cavanaugh could have a curse that caused this...but something's definitely going on with the other half of the party, too!

She realizes that's not really super reassuring...she has to be honest, despite her status as a "prophet" she feels like she hasn't helped much at all.  And, well, that may be because...

...Illia Nova actually has an intersex condition, which gave her the horns while also giving her female secondary sexual characteristics.  She's known this for a few years now, after she consulted her doctor about the fact she wasn't menstruating.  She's started to harbor some deep self-doubt because of this, but hasn't said anything to anyone, because she fears saying anything would expose her as a "fake."  Cavanaugh is the first and only person to know.  Illia doesn't know how to consolidate these two sides of herself--the reason the public latched onto her has a mundane explanation, but she has all this magic training, and now she's getting visions, is she a chosen one of Cryos, or isn't she?  It hurts her head to think about it and she hates to dwell on it.  She has to keep her chin up for everybody due to her visible public image.  It gets hard sometimes.

Cavanaugh can't help but relate.  It's not the same situation of course, but her family has a public presence too, and she also feels like she has to overcompensate for it.   She appreciates Illia telling her all this and tells her she doesn't have to be so shy around her.  They're both kids, after all, and kids shouldn't have to hide their anxieties.  Cav reassures her that she's doing a great job helping them with her magic, even if it doesn't directly relate to the current world situation!  Helping doesn't have to mean solving everyone's problem at once.

The two agree to stick together even after they get Vinna and Dino on a boat back to Statica.  Cavanaugh could be Illia's bodyguard full time once she's done with her town guard duties, and for now, she could perhaps help Illia figure out the specifics of her visions, and how they relate to the portal crisis.
