Profile

(WIP.)

Family: She's a self-made scientist and has a house that doubles as a laboratory.  She lives with her folian lab-assistant-turned-wife, and is starting to get worried she's missed the opportunity to have kids.

Bio: Zephyr d’Ron Tani lu Krisan is a portal scientist working for Aervrin’s best and brightest.  Vinna and Dino make their way to her for assistance with the portal crisis, as Vinna knows her as the most outspoken critic of her own father's research.  After Zeph is brought up to speed on the situation, she agrees to help them, but they need to go down through Tektios.  An aronite in mek territory stands out pretty badly, given the races have a longstanding rivalry, but she doesn't mind the detour--unbeknownst to Vinna and Dino, she likes to engage in corporate espionage in Tektios.

Once there, the party gets distracted by finding a mek with amnesia washed up on the shores of the Tektish capital.  Initially apprehensive of them and thinking it could be some sort of trick, Zeph oddly warms up to them.  As it turns out, they may be more relevant to that whole "corporate espionage" thing than she knows.  As for Vinna and Dino, their exact situation that brought them to her in the first place could usher in a new era of dimensional theory.  Things are certainly getting interesting for Zephyr lu Krisan around here!!

Extra:

  • As much as she is a critic of Reeve's research, she does find portal technology fascinating, and would love to see something absolutely wild done with them.  She just doesn't see any evidence for it.  Yet.
  • She enjoys hacker fights with meks.
Below is spoiler info, divided into sections that correlate with other characters, since these profiles also work as a story summary.

Advised reading, but not necessary for understanding: Everything else mentioned in Vinna's section!

Zephyr is specifically consulted by Vinna and Dino because of Vinna's apparent existential disparity in the world.  According to Vinna, her family doesn't recognize her anymore, and this might be related to the current portal crisis??  It sounds like utter nonsense.  She's never even heard of this "Reeve Sterling" person that's apparently supposed to be her rival.  However, Vinna's desperation is awfully convincing, so she invites her and her earthen friend to stay around her laboratory while she studies theory.

She has heard of "parallel universes" here and there, but nothing's been definitively proven with just portal technology, and she had just dismissed it as wishful thinking.  But if Vinna is telling the truth, it would make an awful lot of sense that parallel universes are to blame, and somehow the portal accident she and Dino were a part of shifted them to this universe.

But that's merely theory.  Theory is nothing without some rigorous experimentation.  But how's a portal scientist supposed to experiment using portals when the portals across the whole planet have all stopped working?

Zeph elaborates on portal mechanisms: Specifically, the crystals that power each portal have stopped reacting.  The way the portals work is that Solennian crystals are charged with electricity, which opens up a door to the god Nocturne's sanctuary, the Gateway.  (This is a bit of an open secret amongst dimensional researchers, as the idea of using magical items from one god's territory for purposes of going through another god's sanctuary seems more than a little sacreligious.  Because of this, this fact is not widely taught to the public.)  Once through the portal, travelers are beamed instantaneously through the Gateway's various rifts in space, which completes the portal transfer.  If parallel universes are indeed real, then it should be possible to access one through the Gateway, as that's how every portal operates.  If Vinna wants to get back to the world she remembers living in, that's her best bet.

The Solennian crystals are formed from natural magic-infused water wells all throughout Solennia; perhaps interacting with the source itself could yeild some results despite the external crystals being dormant.  If Vinna and Dino want to pursue this, it's going to be a lot of travel without teleportation to aid them, and a bit tricky going through the territory--Solennia isn't exactly known for being friendly to outsiders, especially regarding their magic.  Zephyr agrees to take them at least as far as Tektios (so she can get some corporate espionage done along the way), and for them to keep in touch afterward in case they make any discoveries.
