Theme

Na’im currently lives in Santa Rosa, California, where he moved to escape the hostility and harassment from his former legal guardian, an unwelcoming religious environment, and the sour memories a few failed relationships - the most significant of which was the disastrous end to a romantic relationship with his best friend. His mental health had been suffering extremely, culminating in a breakdown that made him finally face his codependent tendencies and the control his agoraphobia and anxiety disorder was having over his life.

He needed a new start, a place without the same baggage, and space to learn how to be himself authentically. (Also a lot of help.) He’s gotten involved with a small but growing LGBTQ Muslim group and works as a bookkeeper (among other odd jobs) at a small mosque, in addition to trying to juggle going to college as a religious studies major. His time is pretty limited, with how he tends to overwork himself, but he’s making a lot of progress toward being a happy and stable guy, for once.

That’s not to say things are amazing all the time, and he backslides often, but he’s got a genuine hope for the future, which is more than he had just a few years ago.

ANXIETY

Na’im is a very others-first type of person, and really taking the time to examine his own needs and wants is something he’s only just now doing in recent years. He’s always chasing outside approval and trying to trade Usefulness and Service for praise and positive attention, though it’s a habit he’s trying to work on. He has pretty severe anxiety that he manages (sometimes poorly) with therapy and medication but it’s a slow, uphill battle. He tends to catastrophize when small things go wrong and to also bottle up his own issues to avoid being a burden, which has led to more than one total meltdown.

It’s hard for him to push through his social anxiety and to meet new people, and he doesn’t have many friends because of it, but he prefers fewer and more powerful interpersonal connections anyway. He’s loyal and steadfast and impossibly caring once you get past that outer layer of SHY. He wants to love and he wants to BE loved (platonically, romantically) more than anything else.

Trivia

Na'im is fascinated with language, and is fluent in Hebrew, Arabic, English, and American Sign Language. He knows some Spanish and slightly more French, in addition to bits of Israeli Sign Language and British Sign Language.

He's been in some intensive speech therapy for most of the time he's lived in the United States and can generally speak English in a way that's understood, even if it's not super clear. His voice is worse when he's tired or anxious, and he's had enough bad experiences that he can go entirely mute around unfamiliar people.

Na'im is a great cook! He was in charge of meals while growing up and it kind of forced him to Get Gud Quickly, but now it's something he does because he loves it. Cooking and baking for someone is one of his preferred ways to show he cares about them.

He wasn't allowed to listen to very much music, or see many movies, or even watch a lot of TV so pop culture references and memes often go right over his head! He's working on catching up on some of what he missed - the books at least, and he reads voraciously.

His worst food/drink routine is definitely pouring espresso shots into coffee-flavored Monster because he never goddamned sleeps and overworks himself. STOP THIS BOY.

He started exercising as a way to control some of his anxiety (u can’t panic if ur 2exhausted), and got really into doing yoga! He’s very good at it now and finds a lot of peace in it. (Bonus: his ass looks great in yoga pants.) He also tends to bike or jog almost anywhere instead of driving.

Alon al-Asad

Na’im’s best friend from childhood and at-one-time boyfriend. The two have been inseparable for most of their lives, with Alon’s boisterous personality balancing out Na’im’s quieter one. Na’im’s agoraphobia was at its worst when they started their romantic relationship and it was easy for him to grow codependent on Alon, but Alon’s immaturity and commitment issues coupled with Na’im’s struggle with his orientation and mental health led to a disastrous end. They’ve slowly and with care rebuilt their friendship over the following years, as they’ve each worked on being better people.

Legal guardian. Donglord supreme.

Ibrahim Shareef

The man that formally adopted Na’im and brought him to the US. Ibrahim was a strict man with superstitious habits that held Na’im to impossible personal and moral standards. Na’im was always desperately seeking Ibrahim’s approval and his praise, but rarely received it. Na’im was constantly punished for even minor infractions and the slightest disobedience (imagined or real), and was locked out overnight more than once, until Ibrahim eventually disowned him when Na’im was seventeen. The damage this did to Na’im’s self-worth is something he’s still trying to recover from.

Mentor/Father-figure.

Talib ibn Efrain al-Risha’a

Mentor/Father-figure

Talib was the man who found Na’im wandering on the road, and who took him in and gave him a home at the mosque in Harat. His warmth and kindness and impossibly huge heart is something that Na’im both misses terribly and strives to imitate. He gave Na’im his name, his faith, and a future; and he’s taken on a kind of mythical reverence in Na’im’s memories. His advanced age and illness, compounded by unrest between Israel and Palestine, is what pushed him to ask his long-time friend Ibrahim to look after Na’im in the States, though he always planned to bring Na'im back. Talib passed away when Na’im was in middle school.

Tired parentals.

Faris and Israa al-Asad

Faris was another friend of Talib - and Ibrahim, though more distant - and another native of Harat. (He was responsible for convincing Ibrahim to settle in California with Na’im, later.) His wife Israa is a linguist from France, with family in the US. The two were often thankful for Na’im’s calming effect on their wild son, though Israa always liked Na’im a little more than Faris did. When Ibrahim would kick Na’im out for the latest infraction, Alon would sneak him into the house while Israa pretended not to notice and she would often keep Faris from finding out. Their marriage deteriorated in recent years and the two are currently separated.
