Personality

Hanako grew up without much contact with anyone but her sister, and that has made her overly suspicious of other people and their motives. Because of that, she tends to be clueless as to social cues, and might have a hard time interacting with people. Since her incident with the Evil Team—that left her one-eyed—she’s been more wary of her surroundings and will sometimes think she is being followed when it isn’t the case. She has some sort of stress disorder because of that traumatic experience. As a result, she experiences a sense of altered reality, an inability to remember important aspects of her trauma’s memory, and vivid flashbacks of the event. She can also seem detached and cold due to displaying symptoms that can include reduced emotional responsiveness, distressing memories of her trauma, and difficulty experiencing or showing positive emotions. She will often get lost and dissociate, looking straight at nothing, losing the thread of conversation.

She loves her Pokemon companions, yet—and unbeknownst to her—she will often put them through the same dire and hazardous training and mentally exhausting work that she puts herself through. She holds deep feelings of abandonment and she has issues with self-worth, believing she’s not good enough for anyone. That’s why her sister left. That’s why her mother and father don’t stay in the house for much. That’s why I need to improve. Better myself. Be a better trainer for my Pokemon. Train. Improving is all that matters, at all costs. Everything will fix itself later. She doesn’t know when to stop battling, and might end up hurt because of that. She tends to have very self-harming behaviours.

She thinks learning and changing and improving are the way to go. Yet... she holds strongly to her beliefs and will only change with the help of a great catalyst, or with some realisation that makes her deem her actions as unbearable or incoherent with her her way of thinking.

About Pokemon, she has mixed, contradictory feelings. Are they just extensions of their trainers? Are they ‘evil’ too? That Scyther, why did he do it? Did he enjoy it too, like the Team who hurt her? She wonders about that a lot.

History

Hanako was born and raised in Vermilion City. There, Hayato, her father, worked as a sailor. He was always dwelling around the harbour and the ships, hence he didn’t spend much time at home. Hayato tried to bring her as much as he could to the harbour to show her the little things of his work, but it wasn’t possible as often as he’d have liked; besides, he’d always be on trips on big cruisers or little ships.

As for her mother, Motoko, she was a Pokemon researcher and innovator. She spent little time in the City, as she was always travelling around Kanto, and even other regions. There were times when she was gone for months only to be back for a week. She always made sure to contact by video-call, usually daily. But it wasn’t enough for Hanako, of course. Growing up with little to no human contact can take a toll on oneself. Thankfully, though, she had her sister, who cared for her and acted as a mother figure. Miyako was five years older than her, and she worked from home, so she was always there for Hanako. The two lived at their home in Vermilion City with a Ninetales that Miyako had found. When she was quite young, Miyako had found the Ninetales hurt and apparently lost in a nearby forest, as a Vulpix at this time, and had brought her home. Miyako cared deeply for Kiria—that’s how she named her—and never left her side.

Hanako hadn’t made many friends in primary nor secondary school, and she was often left alone because of her tendency to lose track of conversations and focusing too much on things like drawing, origami, manual work, etc. Not that she seemed to care, but deep down she did long for more contact. She had also begun to take an interest in photography and writing, as well as playing piano. She also loved going on long walks, and would often pester her sister until she agreed to go. It was a good time for them to gather berries and herbs, for her sister’s work. For her thirteenth birthday, her mother gifted her a Purrloin she had gotten from one of her trips to Unova; while her father gave her a Vivillon—Elegant Pattern—from Kalos for her fourteenth. Purrloin was a bit disinterested at first but she grew closer to Hanako in time. Vivillon was always flying around and seemed always happy to be with Hanako.

One day, though, when she was walking with Yukari (her Purrloin) and Shion (her Vivillon) around a forest near the city, she spotted a group of people dressed in black, imprisoning many wild Pokemon. She froze for a moment, and the criminals noticed her. She saw the poor face of a Butterfree who was being cut by a Scyther for refusing to get into the cell. The Butterfree had lots of cuts in her body, so Hanako couldn’t help but snatch the Butterfree away from them. It was able to fly to a treetop, far from the reach of the criminals. Before her or any of her Pokemon could do anything, though, one of the men instructed her Scyther to leave on her a deep cut. And so the Scyther did. He slashed both her eyes, and as the world faded to black, the man walked away with his group, laughing it out. “Be more careful next time, kid,” they laughed sarcastically. When Hanako woke up, she was in a hospital, and her right eye’s vision was… gone, while her left eye had a huge scar. Apparently, Yukari had managed to call her sister. From the corner of her eye she could see the Butterfree (whom she later named Akiko) too, it seemed that she had followed her, and she smiled for a moment, but at the same time she felt anger and frustration. She was crying and she was hurt. Nowadays, her memories of the event tend to be hazy. Nightmares displaying that moment and similar ones are normal for her now. She ended up with a scar in her left eye and a patch in her right eye.

A while after that, while Hanako recovered, Kiria got abnormally sick. Miyako searched and searched for a cure, but it seemed no one knew what was happening to the Ninetales. One day, finally, she found scientists who were doing experimental work on Pokemon, and they promised they could cure her Ninetales if she helped them. Without a doubt, she joined them. Hanako, though, had suspicions about these people. They had come to her house once to talk to her sister about the experiments, and for brief moement, she thought she’d spot a shadow moving around them. She wouldn’t know this, but it was a trapped Marshadow. Marshadows are able to channel negative emotions like anger, frustration, and sadness and increase them exponentially, pushing a person to do things they know are wrong for an ultimate purpose. That’s how her sister got lured. Plus, their experimentation seemed dangerous, at best. Now, it has been months since her sister left, but they seem years to Hanako. Her mother stayed at home for more time to support Hanako and care for her; but now around eighteen, Hanako has vowed to bring her sister back and to get revenge on the Team who left her one-eyed. She wanted to find a cure for Kiria’s rare disease, too. But on the way, she had lost her direction, and seemed to be giving herself and her Pokemon an extraordinary amount of work, leading to exhaustion, anger, pain, and self-blaming. Blaming herself for not being able to make her sister stay. How could she have left her? Blaming herself for not being able to save the Pokemon. Not being strong enough. She needed more training. Training...

Relationships

Family

Her father, Hayato, a sailor and fisherman. Her mother, Motoko, a Pokemon researcher. Her sister, Miyako, a botanist.

Others

--------------

Skills

Baking. Crochet. Piano. Drawing. Origami. Overall manual stuff. Isn’t too good with numbers or thinking battle strategies, she has a lot to learn about that. She will often think one move is better than another only to change her mind a day later. She’s bad at reacting fast against adversity.

Her trauma and illnesses are not to defeat her. She's above them and she's doing her best to fight off the contradictions inside herself. People are contradictory. They might think one thing and do another. They might be split. They might do things against their values, or they might hold values they keep secret from everyone. They might lie, they suffer and they do things out of spite, out of the unconscious. Even if it's harming them. I think Hanako has a problem with that, she wants to do good but she doesn't know how and she only knows how to keep pushing herself. She thinks she's not getting any results because her training's not good enough. She thinks she was never good enough. At the same time, she thinks she can do anything, accomplish anything, that's why she breaks every time, you see? And her one-eye, that impairment sure will leave her wondering how to see again. How to aid her Pokemon in battle, too. And because of all that, feeling or showing positive emotions is so hard for her. Showing emotions at all, too, might be difficult for her. I wanna see her progress because of outside people, because she can't get out of this endless fruitless path she has carved for herself unconsciously as apunishment for not being able to save her sister, to be with her parents, and come back and just... be happy. Ask her parents to be more present. Tell her sister to come back. And maybe she will leave her revenge aside, who knows, when she finds what happiness is, uh? I think she remembers fondly the times she spent with her sister, but now everytime she does, she gets a hazy memory of her sister leaving, of her scars and her hurt eye, always present. Everything seems like a trigger to that. Maybe she even has delusions about that, feeling that experience as a vivid, real-time, now, experience again, even when nothing is happening but a battle between Pokemon. Sometimes, she doesn't know what to think of Pokemon; Pokemon, too, are contradictory.

As she has only one eye, her vision suffers. She has declines in her abilities to accurately track moving objects, to judge distances, and to perceive depth. She is still learning how to function with one eye.

Her fighting style is rather brutal and discordant. Having no idea when to stop a fight, seeming not to realise the condition of the Pokes in the heat of the fight, even if she herself and her Pokemon are badly damaged. She pushes on. Even if it means using herself as a shield when her Pokemon are not moving anymore. Which is nonsense, but she’ll do things out of spite and reflex. She’ll blame it on her poor training and will be more demanding on herself.

Pokemon Team

Yukari, the Purrloin (F)

500px-509Purrloin.pngPersonality: Hanako's first Pokemon. When she first got her, the mischievous cat hid  Hanako's stuff—her plushies, her pencils, her camera—around the house in  a treasure-hunt kind of game. Hanako got a little upset but how  couldn't she play on with her first Pokemon's playful games? The  Purrloin didn't seem to like contact too much, but with time she became  more amicable with Hanako and will often be found napping in her lap or  having to be carried around by her Trainer. She named her Yukari for the  colour of her fur. She loves to takes naps and play around with Hanako,  and won't usually be the one initiating contact with new trainers or  Pokemon, aside from playing them some prank or stuff like that. Yukari's  been feeling a bit down lately due to sensing a change in her trainer  behaviour, perceiving her to be more stressed and moody, and will often  refuse to fight or slack in a battle. It is not out of bothering her  trainer, of course, but out of a desire to help her.

Shion, the Vivillon (F) (Elegant Pattern)

666Vivillon-Elegant.pngPersonality: This Vivillon is an energetic one. She loves fluttering around Hanako  and keeps her company at all times, preferring to be up and flying  rather than sleeping or fighting, but will always do her best for her  trainer should she need her. She tends to help Hanako gather berries and  fruits in treetops, as well as using Sleep Powder to help her sleep  when she's feeling uneasy, and then keeping guard for her if they're  sleeping in the out. She's more of a carefree soul and not much of a  battling Pokemon, but she doesn't hold back either. Shion also has to do  with the Purple of its wings.

Akiko, the Butterfree (F)

500px-012Butterfree.pngPersonality: Her bright companion. This Butterfree was freed by Hanako when it was  in the process of being captured by an Evil Team. The Butterfree managed  to escape, but Hanako was dealt a heavy blow and was sent to the  hospital. Butterfree followed close by, and watched as Purrloin went as  fast as she could to alert Hanako's sister. She was the first thing  Hanako saw when waking up in the Hospital, and ever since, Hanako's  loved her Butterfree, whom she named Akiko. It was a dark, cloudy day  when she met her, but for Hanako, she had shone bright. She tends to  shorten it to Aki. Aki is a very curious but catious Pokemon. She will  often be a bit distanced of Kayrana, as to hide and protect her from any  possible harm. She's gotten a bit paranoic too, like her trainer, and  vows to protect her from any harm as Hanako did with her. For her,  Hanako lost an eye, and she'd never forget that. Aki trains as hard as  possible, even when exhausted, to please Hanako, and doesn't usually  realise when Hanako's hurting herself by exherting herself too much, as  she deems her a role-model.
