About

Passionate • Clever • Headstrong • Fearful • Overly-protective • Anxious •

Nadia is the Deva that picked Damien as his charge, meaning the two can magically enhance each other's abilities. In the world of demon hunters, such an action is considered a bad omen, since Devas only intervene in times of great peril to both demon and humankind, naturally being mediators of the two. Things couldn't be bad enough - but Nadia deals with something much deeper. The truth of the matter was, her charge wasn't just coincidence - all she wanted to do was to protect her friends, and every time she looks at their faces she has to remember that they've forgotten hers, all in the name of being strong enough.

"I'll protect this world and the people in it no matter what, and some cowardly demon lazing about in his throne certainly isn't going to stop me!"

Summary

Silly girl, always running around with your fingers all knotted together because the world always seems too big for you. Silly girl who thought things were that easy. Silly girl who jumped into everything without thinking first.

Nadia is a Deva, an angel like race that acts as a mediator between the Asura and the human race. But she wasn't always so. A long time ago, she used to be a human hunter, a slayer of demons - or at least, in-training-to-be. Her squad was one of the few places she really felt alive, and as for her father? Even though they weren't tied by blood, he was the best thing she could ever ask for. But growing up, she couldn't get past the looks and the stares she would get when dad would pick her up from school, and even the ones that persisted when she popped into the clan headquarters after school, ready to train. She wasn't born one of them, so of course there would be whispers--

It was no surprise then, that when Nadia stumbled upon the clan secret - about how her best friend in the world was, in fact, a reincarnation of one of the world's most powerful demons - that she decided to take things into her own hands. Infuriated by how all the adults around her kept things away from her and her friends, she let it spill. Soon enough, she would come to learn how big of a mistake that was. It turns out, Damien couldn't handle the pressure. It started with the tired look he'd get on his face day after day. Then, there were the family fights. Then one day, after a particularly nasty argument, his powers started to go out of control, and then they called him a threat, and before she knew it, everyone was after the two of them. She watched her friend go from lively to devastated to empty. "What am I, really?" he'd ask her, and it was one of those questions she didn't know if she could answer in turn. Then the next day his eyes turned red, and the question stared her in the face. Was he really a reincarnation, or was that thing inside him eating his soul alive? She couldn't tell, but whatever the answer, she wanted it to stop. If she could take everything back, she could, but things were never that easy, she'd tell herself.

And then he came. This human man with giant wings like a spotted owl's. He pointed at her with a gnarled finger and said that she had the blood.

"For what?" she'd ask.

"To become what your people would call an angel."

The cost of gaining so much divinity, it turned out, would be the memory of her being from anyone she'd ever met. It would fix this mess. So she listened to what the man said, and before she knew it, she was alone, just like the very beginning when her dad first found her. She thought there would be peace. But with the demons galvanizing their forces so quickly, Nadia is clever enough to know something is wrong. So once again, she returns to her old friend Damien, this time a stranger, and tells him she's been sent to help. Devas haven't partnered with Hunters in over one hundred years, but it had to be believable, right? Besides, it's not a lie -- not really. Because this time, she'll protect them for once.

Design

• Nadia has fear-based powers alongside strengthened magical abilities - she can frighten enemies through illusions and getting in their head. She also uses this on other people gently if they irritate her, forcing them to leave her alone wordlessly. I'd love to see this incorporated in art if you want to go the extra mile!

• You can also draw her as a human if you'd like!

Trivia

• Nadia's deva wings, like all devas, are comprised of magic. This means humans that don't have the second sight (as all hunters do) can't see them, and she functually looks like a normal human. Her pointed ears are still visible, however, so she hides them behind her hair in these instances. Even if they do see her, they think she's some elf cosplayer which gets on her nerves.

• She became a Deva to protect her friends, most notably Damien. In forgetting her, he forgot the incidents that led him to discover his true identity, and thus regained control over himself.

• Humans who become Devas, as in Nadia's case, must sacrifice everyone's memories of them, both as a trial of sacrifice (which Devan culture upholds strongly), but also to fuel their powers - and the prominent themes within those memories dicate what kind of power they obtain. Nadia's was centred around fear in her last human moments, which led her to having fear-based powers.

• Nadia was Isaac's adopted daughter. She disappears for a few days after his death. Damien and Samuel are led to believe it's because she's following up on the demons who had killed him - but instead, it's quite the opposite. She was mourning for the loss of her father, who had forgotten her in his last moments.

Damien

As a Deva, Damien seems to find something familiar about Nadia - something he can't quite pinpoint. This, naturally, scares Nadia a little bit, so she always makes an attempt to subtly change the subject. Re-establishing a relationship with a Damien who has forgotten her is difficult for Nadia, and she tends to be much more reclusive than she has been in the past. Eventually, though, Damien rediscovers who she really is at the core - sensitive and headstrong - and she feels like he might know her again - well, almost.

As a human, Damien is one of Nadia's best friends. The adopted daughter of Isaac, Damien's father's best friend, they met each other shortly before they were initiated in a squad as hunters. She is very tomboyish in nature - loving to play video games with the other two, but also pulling them off to the movies and writing classes. The other two often tease her for always having her nose in her book, but only good naturedly. She's also the one who tends to pull the two back from making rash decisions - something she continues doing as a Deva, but more factually instead of in a friend-like manner.

Lucian

At the beginning, Nadia and Lucian are instantly at odds. After Isaac's death, Nadia holds a certain amount of resentment towards Lucian and him taking his spot - though she is at this time unaware that this was her father's plan. Moreover she quickly clues in that Lucian is Vulpecula reborn (and self-aware, for that matter) and becomes suspicious of his plans with Damien. Similarly, Lucian has clued in that Nadia is a very young Deva, and has suspicions about her true goals - and whether she has known the people she is allying with in the past. With time, he inches further onto her secret - which she tries to push further back. After all, such an arrogant young man could only have self-centered intentions, especially with his disregard for his predecessor. Despite this, however, the two are fairly similar in nature - and in fact, Lucian reminds Nadia of a younger Isaac at some times. They've both encountered different kinds of loneliness, and both are trying to protect the members of the squad. Their friendship takes the longest to build, but at the end of the day they find out they have a shared appreciation in books and writing; often going to philosophical seminars and the like together. The true mark of this friendship for Nadia is when Lucian is there for her when Isaac appears one last time.

Samuel

One of Nadia's two best friends in a previous life. Nadia is distant towards Samuel, which he finds difficult when he tries to connect with her. In truth, Nadia simply had a lot of hobbies in common with him as a human, particularly bonding over that love of music - and having that disappear is devastating to her. In the past, she always found his skills musically fairly impressive, and wished she can achieve that kind of mastery with her guitar (which he said she will, with practice). As Samuel has a better understanding of music theory than her, he'll would sometimes help tune her guitar and give her tips for reading sheet music and being able to play better, an activity which Nadia now sorely misses. She, however, does call him Sung on occasion, a nickname Samuel only lets close friends and family call him, hinting to the rest of the squad that she might not be who she appears.
