Mateo is a tall Puerto Rican man with dark brown hair, teal eyes, and a small patch of beard on his chin. He wears glasses, switching between half-rimmed and thick-rimmed ones, and has a notable mole on under his lip on the left side of his face. He wears a turtleneck sweater in either brown or navy blue and a light brown coat on top with blue slacks held up by a simple brown belt.
About
Mateo is just an average English professor with an intense love of learning as well as teaching. He lives a modest life and stays out of trouble, oblivious to the supernatural and magical beings and creatures that may inhabit the world. After all, life as he knows it is already something Mateo considers to be pretty extraordinary!
History
Mateo was born and raised in Puerto Rico until he was about eleven years old when he and his family moved over to the Continental US. The move was very hard on Mateo, and he was constantly picked on for his inability to speak "proper" English. Rather than get discouraged by this, Mateo took it as a reason to study and practice harder at learning and perfecting the English language.
Within a matter of three years, Mateo was completely fluent in English. Even though he had no reason to study English any further, he had found a new love for the language whether it be speaking it, writing it, or just reading it. When Mateo graduated from high school, he knew exactly what he wished to pursue.
Mateo earned a PhD in English and set out to teach upper and lower level English in a college setting. He currently works as one of the main English professors at a University where he works alongside Math and Algebra Professer Glen Shields.
Despite Glen and Mateo being nearly polar opposites in personality, they quickly developed a strong mutual attraction and have since been navigating their personal relationship with one another while attempting to maintain a professional relationship in the workplace...but it's harder than it seems.
Trivia
- He regularly dyes his hair to avoid any grays he has being seen. He's been neglecting it more as time goes on and some is more visible now.
- If you call him "Mattie" his face lights up!
- Mateo smokes but tries to keep it on the down low. He doesn't smoke often enough for the scent to be trapped in his clothing, mostly just when he's under a lot of stress.
- He has a large family who are all pretty much as loud and happy-go-lucky as he is.
- He has an almost father-like concern for Owen after reading some of his creative writing assignments.
- Mateo hasn't introduced Glen to his family just yet as they tend to be a bit overbearing at first (and he doesn't want to risk scaring Glen off!)
- Mateo is closest in his family to his nephew Guy. Being one of the closest things Mattie has had to his own child, he would do anything for Guy.
Notable Relationships
Glen [ boyfriend!? ]
Glen is Mateo's boyfriend. Glen is Mateo's boyfriend. No matter how many times he says it, it doesn't feel quite real to Mateo. The two of them truthfully don't even seem to have much in common, but Mateo can't help but be smitten by Glen. He still fondly remembers when they first met, Mateo was just moving all his stuff into his new office across from Glen's and making way too much noise in the process, earning a displeased look from Glen and apologizing later by leaving a coffee and a note on the math professor's desk. He never expected that meeting would lead to something quite like this...
Guy [ sobrinito ]
Guy is the son of Mateo's older sister. Mateo frequently babysat Guy and took care of his nephew when his parents separated. Mateo always made it a point to reach out to his nephew and check in on him throughout the years, being a constant in Guy's life. Now that Guy is all grown up, he gets a little flustered when his overly-doting uncle visits, but they both show their care for one another in their own ways.
Owen [ star pupil ]
Owen is a student of Mateo's with rather...eccentric writing. While Mateo must admit, Owen is a fantastic writer, his focus in most of his assignments tends to be rather dark. Mateo does his best to keep an eye on students who display concerning behaviors, and Owen is no exception. He's mentioned his concerns to Glen before, but Glen only responded that Owen's uncle Terry said Owen is just like that.
Jackson [ frequenting thief ]
Jackson is an odd one... Mateo caught him trying to steal from his wallet and offered to buy him something to eat and allow him stay awhile, assuming that Jackson was just a broke college student in need. After parting ways, though, Jackson seems to pop back up in his life on occasion, and seems moreso interested in the man himself than the money. Mateo is flattered by the attention, but he really only has eyes for Glen.
