BEFORE DEATH

Etsuki was a close childhood friend and classmate of Ayumu. The two were extremely close to each other as if they were lovers, even though neither of them dared to cross the friendship line for many years. Whenever Ayumu was depressed or wanted to hurt himself, Etsuki would be able to calm him down and make him happy, he didn't even care if he had to spend a lot of time at the hospital just so he could stay with Ayumu. Etsuki has always been secretly in love with Ayumu, but he was worried that his friend would hate him if he ever told him the truth. He has eventually decided to ask Ayumu to prom (as a friend) on their last year of high school, and there he left a message of confession in Ayumu's yearbook, telling him that he is going to take on a degree in medicine in the hopes to find a cure for him. To his surprise, Ayumu accepted him without questions, but he also told Etsuki in tears that he was going to move overseas because his parents have found a more promising doctor for his medical conditions. The two spent the remaining of their time together before Ayumu's departure, and Etsuki promised him that he would come find him as soon as he finishes his studies.

Years later, Etsuki had finally obtained his degree, and the research lab which he had an internship position had a promising discovery in a drug which could improve patient conditions regarding Ayumu's diseases. However, the news of Ayumu's death had suddenly reached Etsuki, just when he thought he could finally travel aboard to meet his boyfriend. Devestated, he went to a psychic and attempted to talk to Ayumu, but there he learnt that Ayumu was not entirely "dead", as his soul was trapped in a limbo-like dimension somewhere between life and death. He soon became obsessed in finding ways to reach Ayumu in the limbo, he even began researching on spiritual cult for extreme measures. Etsuki finally understood that there were two ways for mortals to reach limbo: dying naturally with sins and regrets, or violating nature by committing suicide. In the end, he killed himself on a hillside near a power station by prying his chest open and stabbing at his own heart.

AFTER DEATH

After Etsuki's death, his soul was not able to move on and was sent to the limbo. There he was given a vessel of a dog plush by Milo, which gives him the power to transform into a kemonomimi human. Unlike the others who died from accidents, Etsuki does posess some memories from his past life (but not all). For one, he remembers exactly how and why he died, and he also remembers that Ayumu is the person dearest to him. Etsuki also had a burning obsession to find a cure for Ayumu's sickness even though he knew very well both of them were already dead. Death, however, apparently did not stop him from fulfilling his promise, and he ended up going a bit overboard trying to accomplish his goal. Along with Ayumu, he chose to live in Neonia solely because of the opportunities offered to him by Yuzuru, he loves to hide in his underground lab day and night trying to create a drug that cures Ayumu, and he would test them on victims brought to him by Yuzuru in return for providing shady medical services for Neonia residents.

Ayumu [ Best Friend & Boyfriend ]

Etsuki was Ayumu's best friend before he died. He originally took up a pharmaceutical degree to promise Ayumu that he would find a way to cure his sickness, but Ayumu died before he could achieve anything. Sworn to live up to his promise, he ended up killing himself as to join Ayumu in the limbo, and became obsessively driven to find a cure even he knew that both of them were dead.

Iemasa [ Research Acquaintance | Business Partners (?) ]

Iemasa is a creepy coroner who lives next door to Etsuki's lab. He often provide Etsuki with shady medical advices in exchange for corpses and experimental samples for his sinister "hobby".
