Crewmember: Azriel Fletcher

BIOGRAPHY:

Azriel is the co-founder of Snow  & Arrow, and the "Arrow" in the company name.  While they started  out as a fiery assistant, their dedication to the crew eventually earned  them the spot of captain.  The job was initially overwhelming, but  they've since grown into the role and mellowed out.  The crew sees Azriel as intelligent and calculating, but still with a bit of an impulsive streak left over from their earlier years.  They'll hear anyone out if they have a concern, or better yet, a mission to give, but sometimes they can be seen as dismissive due to their focus on their work and pursuit of exciting jobs.  Still, they show their fellow crewmembers that they care in their own way, and always notice when someone's upset.

They possess a prototype psionic implant in their brain, which gives them a telekinesis-like psychic ability.  It's useful if the crew ever finds themselves in a combat situation, but its existence raises some suspicion--how does a 28-year-old possess a unique invention such as that?  Azriel comes across a little sketchy due to their caginess about their past coupled with their earlier rebellious behavior as the crew's former assistant.  Azriel waves these concerns away; it's the age of galactic exploration, after all, the focus should be on the future and not on someone's past.

Speaking of that past, Azriel has quite the history.  Raised in a spaceport orphanage, they never knew anything of their family--and, honestly, they're fine with that.  They noted a lack of interest in others as they grew older, and by the time they graduated high school, they were quite the schemer.  Curious as to how far they could bend society's rules, they started stealing and trespassing, entirely for the fun of it.  One notable crime was the theft of their prototype implant and the subsequent back-alley surgery of it into their brain.  It's become so ingrained with their biology at this point that it would be impossible to remove it without damage, and the prototype is formally considered lost.

They gained infamy quickly, but were also shut down just as quickly.  After only a year, they were arrested by a police officer with the nickname "Snow."  Snow often maintained contact with criminals after she arrested them, hoping to understand them better and work things out with them.  Eventually, she had to transfer to another sector, leaving Azriel alone with their three-year sentence.  They had a lot of time for introspection, and mostly tried to analyze why they felt so impassively about others.  They kept Snow's kind words in mind after their release, but didn't feel dedicated to earning an honest living.

Only months later did they come across Snow again entirely by chance at a cafe.  While they were hesitant to talk with her, she was beaming about a new business idea she had, one that was devoted to helping people.  Just like that, she offered Azriel a position as co-founder.  Who were they to say no?  The job offer might've gone to their head, however; Azriel in the early Snow & Arrow days was quite reckless and daring, especially getting on the nerves of Vargas and Zschauin.

Their impulsivity came with a price, and one dangerous mission that they pushed for resulted in Snow contracting a fast-acting alien disease that killed her in a mere three days.  Her promoting them to captain was her final act.  While they might not show it outwardly, Snow deeply affected Azriel, and her death hit them hard.  Nowadays, they aim to uphold and respect her memory, being more careful with their decisions and more kind with their words.  In the present day, Azriel's changing more than they're noticing.

FUN FACTS:

They consider themselves between male and female, but distinctly different and thus neither gender as a result.

If it works with their outfit, they will always wear their scarf.  It's the very scarf Snow used to wear.

They’ve had their tattoos since they were 18.  To them, it was symbolic of their newfound independence.

They’re an only child and don’t mind one bit.

They're one of those crazy people that enjoy pineapple on pizza.  Unbelievable.
