About

Quiet • Contemplative • Loyal • Clingy

Upon first meeting, Ephraim can come across as quiet, contemplative, and sullen. He's used to people avoiding him for his odd personality and generally dirty and ragged appearance. However, when someone shows interest in him or whatever he's working, he quickly lights up and becomes chatty and accommodating to that person, nearly always to a fault. Ephraim will latch on to people who are kind to him, trusting them immediately and often oversharing. Ephraim's name is a particular point of pride to him. Oddly enthusiastic about such a common thing, he'll tell his name to anyone who asks (and those who don't), happily and freely. It was given to him by a friend when he had none, and he treasures his name as a great gift.

The only thing he tends to become quiet about is his past; a sore point of conversation for him. Though with enough trust and easing, he may open up to someone about his cruel past as a captive and slave. Though when it comes to the topic of the fate of a man named Ainsley, someone Ephraim speaks highly of and reveres as a mentor and friend, he once again falls into silence.

Summary

Ephraim keeps his identity as a dragon a secret as much as he can. He greatly fears being captured or exploited again, and he's certain the fastest way back to his old life is to let the wrong person know what he truly is. That doesn't mean its a secret to everyone, however, and there are a few who know.

He enjoys watching people bustle about and live their lives, particularly when he can drink at the same time. He can drink an impressive amount before he feels the effects of alcohol, but he isn't immune to being drunk by any means, and it brings out a more outgoing and cheerful side of him. He also tends to lean into his draconic nature when intoxicated, and often purrs or rumbles if content.

While he hangs out in public and enjoys the idea of people, someone actually talking to him makes him nervous, and he's incredibly awkward, shy, and reserved. It takes someone else taking the initiative to start any sort of relationship with him.

Ephraim never learned how to fly properly, having been too young when he was taken to learn from his parents the way he should have. He has trouble taking off from the ground and gaining altitude, and trying to do so makes him tire quickly. He's much more comfortable simply gliding from one place to another. He's incredibly self-conscious about this, and other things that fly make him jealous and feel inadequate, especially other dragons.

Ephraim is a type of Dragon from the far, far polar north. He doesn't feel the cold at all, but overheats easily. His kind lived in the mountains rarely visited by humans, weaving the stories and histories of dragons in the Aurora. He doesn't know exactly what that means or how to accomplish it, and he feels terribly inadequate for it. It's something he'd like to do to carry on the tradition of people, as the last of his kind besides his utterly uninterested sister, but he's never sure if he'll learn how.

Other dragons expect much of him for being one of their record-keepers, and are often disappointed to learn he doesn't know the art, and the history and knowledge of dragons may well be lost forever.

Design

• Ephraim's face markings can be "close enough", they don't have to be exact. His spots and stripes are whatever, as long as they look vaguely similar it's fine.

• His dragon tail shape can be simplified to a simple => shape.

Trivia

• He loves to read, and if you're not sure where to find him, the library is a good place to start looking. He'll read anything, always desiring to learn more. This can lead to some bad habits and incorrect ideas, particularly pertaining to romance.

• Ephraim's favorite food is radishes. He didn't get to eat vegetables often early in his life, and he likes the tang of them. He generally prefers vegetables over any kind of meat. He'll never turn down any food and will finish anything someone else doesn't want though– A relic of eating far too little and food being scarce for him for his early life.

• He's a quick learner – watching someone perform a task a few times and he's got it. He has a strong desire to be self-sufficient, he just needs to be taught how. This doesn't seem to apply to cooking, however, which he can never seem to get right.

• Ephraim likes music, but only if its calm, quiet, and not too busy. He enjoys music played with a single instrument, slowly. Fast music played with too many instruments makes him dizzy as he tries to listen.

• In Draconic form, he has four sets of ears, and his hearing is remarkable. The top set of ears tends to pick up higher frequency sounds, and the lower set deeper sounds. When listening intently, both sets swivel and move as he pinpoints the source.

• Every spring, he sheds horribly, and his antlers fall off and begin to grow anew. He's horrifically itchy during spring, as well as allergic to many new sprouting plants. It's generally a miserable time of year of him, particularly if it's hot. He's not too proud to accept someone helping him brush out his fur.

Ainsley

A companion to Ephraim, the two met while Ephraim was in captivity, and fate diverged from there. Sometimes, Ainsley has died shortly after their meeting, but their brief time together remaining an indelible part of the dragon's life, where he adds the man's name to his own. Others, they escape together and remain companions for life, and beyond. Ainsley longs for adventure and exploration, and he and Ephraim can be found in any part of the world. Their evenings are often spent sitting together, enjoying a view as Ainsley draws whatever they've found in his spellbook.

Kova

After a rocky first meeting through their respective partners, Ephraim and Kova now have a deep friendship. Usually they quietly hang out together and watch chaos caused by their partners unfold, but occasionally the two commiserate over the regretable brevity of human life and how to cope with it.

Ilvaya

Though not related by blood, Ephraim met and bonded with Ilvaya. She's a wary, feral dragon afraid of humankind, but Ephraim is trying to make her more comfortable with the idea that blending into society is a good survival tactic. In turn, Ephraim knows very little about being a dragon, and she's happy to teach him how to fly, breathe fire, and generally exist as a dragon. The two have a strong, sibling-like bond.

Sigfriya

Ephraim's wayward elder sister, Sigfriya presumed her younger brother dead and gave up hope on ever finding him. Instead, she settled into a new life as a happy-go-lucky gladiator, and loves what she does. This distresses and concerns Ephraim deeply, and the two butt heads (sometimes literally) when they meet as he tries to convince her to do anything else.
