Quickstats and design notes

❖ Neridan is a tall and obese man. Not just chubby, for real fat
❖ He has a deep adoration for his familiar Zeanu
❖ He's struggling with an eating disorder that gives him constant hunger and as a result is fairly poor paying for his food
❖ He's a bit of a bully and likes to pester people but he wouldn't ever do real harm to friends if he sees it as such

Summary

Neridan is a frost mage near his strongest point who started off as a promising protegée. He built up a lot of strength when much was expected from him but caved under the competitive nature of his training.

When he moved to an academic city, his interest in studying saved him from a bitter stressful existence and helped him meet some real friends for the first time. He's confident that if people want to befriend someone as arrogant and mean-spirited as him, he might still become happy after all.

Physical description

Abnormally tall and obese for a Northerner, Neridan has a height of 184cm or 6 feet and weighs 110kg or 242lbs. He gets most of his weight from the fat he builds up due to overeating, and has the most build-up in his stomach, chest, and legs, and to a lesser extent build-up in his arms and face. His chin is fairly devoid of fat build-up but still shows some of it. As a result of his weight, he has a short round face with thick cheeks. His skin is a dark and saturated red and is nearly constantly greasy. His dark purple eyes are large and often hooded in expression. He's got two short greyish horns and pointed ears of medium length. His hair is shaved short on the right side of his head and grows at neck-length on the left side. It's brown but has been dyed and enchanted to have a gradient from purple to blue. He has a tendency to wear a smug grin on his face.

Neridan's body and magic protect him against colder weather fairly well, so his clothes are more reflective of his personal style. He likes wearing fluffy coat, his favourite being his brown coat with fluff around the neck, the chest, the bottom, and the wrists. He wears blue trousers and is nearly always seen wearing open slippers, even in the freezing cold.

Personality

Neridan doesn't come close to being a good person, but he tries to undo the damage his childhood and young adult years have done onto him. He grew up in a highly competitive environment where all that mattered were his skills, and despite his parents' unconditional love he feared losing his status as 'the best' and lived under constant stress to be better. Neridan felt immense spite for anyone who tried to compete with him and was an arrogant child. While he has shaken off a lot of these childish feelings, they still are present in his roots and contribute to his will to try as hard as he could. How people see him still affects him immensely, and he'll do a lot to be seen as either something great, or a threat.

He is a man who is cold to other people most of the time. Sometimes by apathy towards them, most of the time through cruel humour that breaks down the other in favour of himself. While he is aware this doesn't make him any friends, he believes it's the lesser of two evils compared to how he feels if he can't bring others down slightly. He makes a conscious effort to keep his behaviour to teasing when around friends, but regularly lacks the self control to refrain from being harsh and blunt.

He's overrun with insecurities but managed to get them under control by eating and seeking good company. Lately he succeeded at letting down his guard around his best friends and interacting with them the way he wished he could with all people, and his experience with showing kindness and helpfulness has been overwhelmingly positive on an emotional scale. After all that time he's still afraid that people will see him as soft and inferior if he changes his behaviour to be less blunt, but his emotions and desires are starting to somewhat align in that aspect.

In short, his fears contradict his desires. He wants to be open and friendly but he feels terrified of others' opinion of him. He wants to leave his compulsive competitiveness behind him but feels eyes burning on his back ready to brand him a quitter. He wants to be better but he first needs validation that he's not weak for it.

❖ Letting out his anger through duels and verbal fights
❖ Sarcastic and insulting humour

Dislikes

❖ His binge-eating behaviour outside of the act
❖ Warmer temperatures he can't wear his coat in
❖ Spending any of his time alone

Strengths and advantages

❖ Very close to mastering the offensive branch of frost magic and of a high level on the other branches
❖ Always has Zeanu with him, who is pretty strong and can share vision with him
❖ Good balance between street smart and academic smart
❖ Quite a bit of physical strength in his body
❖ Magic allows for great resistance against the cold

Weaknesses and disadvantages

❖ Terrible physical health, easily tired
❖ Disadvantaged due to his bad mana conservation
❖ Personality detersmost potential allies and friends
❖ Very little self control, fairly impulsive

Trivia

❖ When he dyed his hair, he had chosen an icy blue and a white to reflect his magical style. He got it enchanted to keep the colours in his hair for years to come but when it was finished the enchantment had changed the colours to purple and blue. He hated the colour combination for a long time but eventually grew to accept it. Whenever the enchantment wears off, though, he'll just leave it the way it is.

❖ He has suffered from binge eating disorder for years and has a hard time getting over his disorder. It's entirely impossible for him to stop eating at this point.

❖ Despite his tendency to cruelty, he would never do anything to make Zeanu feel bad or to harm him.

Backstory

Protegée
Neridan was born from two master frost mages who prided themselves with the idea that their son would become just as great as they were, far quicker with the right guidance. They provided him with the best training they could give him from the moment on where he was old enough to understand magic and he his potential naturally unlocked while he was a toddler. Part of his education was shoved aside to push for more training and as a result he became some sort of child protegée, casting at an intermediate level at the mere age of seven.

He was very well aware of his gift and knew that almost none of the other kids his age who were also involved with learning magic were at his level. Combined with his parents' constant reassurance of his talent, Neridan was a fairly arrogant child who didn't get along with that many kids. When his parents weren't pushing him, he had a drive to keep improving for the sake of staying the best. He had a motivating fear of losing his prestige should another one rise so he resented the kids who trained hard to improve.

He continued improving at a steady pace and carried out a lot of his training on his own now that he knew enough of magic to improve without parental guidance. From time to time he'd travel out of town to meet with a frostmaster to learn about the creative aspect of magic that allowed him to play around with the limit of his school. He grew frustrated that his pace was slowing down when he entered the phase where he had to solidify his technique and he was no longer learning anything new anymore, and it slowed down his progress.

Over the years he grew into a teen, then a young adult. The effects of puberty were immense and he grew from an arrogant brat into a sheltered aggressive man. His lack of time to work on himself showed when he had to deal with his personal struggles and crashed whenever he made an attempt to deal with his negative feelings and thoughts. He was annoyed at the world and annoyed at anyone competing with him for doing this to him, as he understood it, and eventually also turned onto his parents, blaming them for bringing him into this vicious circle.

The motivation he had to train turned from a positive motivation based on the will to improve, to a negative one where his fear of being trumped and abandoned dictated his actions. His parents made attempts to help him out of his slump, but he shut them off and coped with his insecurities with an immense amount of anger and food.

Failure
His mental state worsened and his food intake got worse. Around that time he started picking more fights, rather than duels in a safe environment he engaged in street fights where the rules were nonexistent and he risked serious harm. He lost focus and more and more often did he start to lose the fights as they got more unfair. It didn't do a lot of good for his mental state. Slowly he started gaining weight to distract himself from feeling like a loser, a strategy that seemed to work really well.

When he was twenty, his parents finally decided that the competitive environment they had placed Neridan into really had destroyed him. They hoped that their constant reassuring that he was worth it no matter what would cheer him up and get him out of his downward spiral, but they moved far up north with him as a last resort to get him better. They moved to the academic heart of the country in the hopes of finding a physician who was willing to work with him on his mental issues.

Moving turned out to be an enlightening experience as Neridan was no longer surrounded by the people whose only interest in him were his skills. While he was far from happy with his parents again, he did appreciate them giving him no obligations and letting him roam around the city on his own accord. This place was much bigger than his previous village and he found some comfort in being left on his own, but it didn't fix his drive to keep improving. To be fair, he didn't want to use it that much anymore but felt stressed when he decided not to train that day.
