Matt is a man full of contradictions and more falsities than should be allowed in one human. Even his name is one of many that he gives, his own lost to the swirling intriged and a life of crime. He loves to joke and flirt and rarely takes anything seriously. Missions from the leader of assassins are the exception. He loves nothing more than to cause chaos wherever he walks, though he generally doesn’t leave too much damage in his wake. Other than the elusive No. 1 of the association of shadows he is loyal to himself, and difficult to tie down and will not hesitate to cut anyone out of his life that he feels is controlling him. 


He is quick to build himself up and tear himself down, it isn’t known if there is a way to insult him that he hasn't called himself. Matt freely admits his morally gray profession to those who ask, referring to himself as “quite the cold hearted killer” with a playful smirk on his face. This is his default expression and it can be difficult to tell if he is joking or serious at the best of times. He conceals his truths and untruths in the guise that he may always be lying. Even though he chatters a lot, one day the people around him will wake up and realize that, aside from the people he has gone to bed with, the know nearly nothing about this mysterious young man. He is shadowed with secrets as heavily as the runes that decorate his skin.

A warning to those who wish to RP with him: if you arent careful he will shape his personality to tailor-fit the interest of those he interacts with regulary. its in his nature but you may lose the chance to see his true childish, cheerful, and affectionate self. HE also has a chance to act in a very abnormal manner on occasion due to his deppressive swings when his medication fails him.

Backstory


Matt was born a bastard to a noble family on the lower end of the social ladder, the circumstances surrounding his birth caused him to be largely ignored by the family.  Somewhere around age 6 he returned home after a bit of exploring to find the whole place ablaze. He hadn’t had too much attachment to the people there but was still his home, an elf at the scene told him that he was going to have a new home, and he did.

The Association of Shadows, the shady organization of a assassins had taken him in. and he trained to earn his keep learning about human interaction, and learned to care for his new family, or the ones that cared for him anyway, he had found a purpose.  And that purpose was serving the AoS, mostly by spreading death. He forsook his old name and learned to shift and shed identities like clothes. 

The sudden change and shock of the whole transferral had awakened more than a sense of loyalty however, it also allowed him to tap into the language of runes, and my painting them on himself he gained useful abilities for a short time.


He honed his skills and became lithe and agile, able to use his charm to gather information. His first kill was at the age of 12, it went off without a hitch, though Matt swore that he had a terrible feeling the entire time. Surprisingly the first time he killed didn't have as much of an effect on him as it did others, and he suffered no regrets.

From then on, he steadily rose in the rankings from then on, some kills going well some not, and some other members, both new and old, resenting the child that surpassed them. At 19 the AoS and the COSD (a religious cult) started warring. Matt never took much stake in the politics of it, preferring to let his superiors give him the missions they felt best and he fufiled them. 

Matt was given a mission to go in with a team in a joint attack with a few assassin teams and theives guild members. Unfortunately the COSD was aligned the military, and the assassins were quickle outnumbered. Two of the teams were able to retreat in time and another two died in the struggle, four teams of 8 were boxed in and taken alive, Matt’s group being one of them. Matt was quickly separated from the others when he was inspected and his runes found to be more significant than simple tattoos. 

His runes were stripped by a counter spell mage and  kept in solitary confinement, the tight constricting room laid over with stifling enchantments. The limits of his magic tested by the military and the cult, trying to find the source and extent of their power, usually on other thieves and assassins, but sometimes on their own and poor souls ripped straight from the gutters of the lower districts. Eventually, they wanted to look into the physical properties behind the rune application, and magic users, leading to many many scars both physical and not. After 3 months, Matt and the remaining assassins who had survived were rescued by the two major guilds and the resistance.  

After he came back and recovered, he found that his magical power had grown tremendously but at the cost of his declining mental health. If death and insanity could come at anytime, then Matt had made up his mind to enjoy all the pleasures that he could, regardless of social construct or even his own well being.  He began to leave the guild more often, sometimes for days and weeks at a time, without telling a soul. 

He took drugs to enhance his senses and for pleasure, and became addicted to raw mages mace, for their taste and for their effect on his magical potency, as well as alcohol and several other drugs, mostly opiates. 

By 21, he stabilized. Matt started to speak more with his old mentor using his words of wisdom to augment Matt’s previous lessons as a child. He began to see unnecessary killing of innocents and useful people as a waste of life, and, over time began to value his own more. He saw himself as a way to give others pleasure, knowing that he was being used by those around him for their own purposes. As long as he had some company and wasnt alone, he would do whatever was asked of him, changing hemself to fit the whims of others. He was used and thrown away only to find yet another both inside and out of his work. it was a life he came to expect.

And, by 22 finally broke through his barriers in and outside the guild, lessening his addictions and affiliations to the gangs around the red light districts as an order from his superiorsand he shaped himself into an even sharper blade for the shadows. He became aware of the significance of having support in his work, though he didn’t form many incredibly personal attachments. Over the course of the next three years of training missions and work he became the No. 2 assassin in the AOS, highly coveted as a partner but never allowing himself to stay in a partnership officially or for too long.

Runes:

Runes, they’re a tricky thing, snaking in and out of understanding, a runemasters brush is bound to him soul and body. The most powerful brushes are made with some of the owner's blood and when the runes are painted in it the runes power is multiplied.

Matt can cast a variety of differnt runes, but they all fall undere his expertise of assassination, he created them to aid in his work. He can cloak himself in shadow, copy important documents, even impersonate others. After his imprisonment he began developing runs to aid his esape and capture, things like teleportation(over a brief distance), lock picking, the removal of binding and others. His favorite of his runes are the ones he uses for poisons, both to create and heal them.

This abitity does not come without its own price though, as they are taxing for him to use. They are sually accompanied by a slight irritating slinging sensation. Not unlike that of getting a tattoo on your arm.  And the same when the rune fades away leaving a slight scarring that fades in a few days. matt can only use so many a day and some are more exhasting than others. He has once had hemself bedridden for a few days with our exhastion from too much casting. His bound brush helps him cast and being seperated from it makes it much harder to cast, as without it he will need some form of ink or something similar (yes blood works... matt has figured this out)

Not everyne can be marked with runes, only those who are compatible with his magic can use them otherwise they may burn the recipiant or even melt the flesh from their bodies. Thus Matt is loathe to mark other people without thorough testing first.

Other:
His vest is a "vest of holding" it can store anything that can fit into the pockets' openings and a near infinite amount (as far as he knows.)  These items can only be accessed by him and people he gives ownership of the vest to. They have to think of the item in question to be able to pull it out, however, otherwise they ill reach in forever, they would also be able to just dump everything in it onto the floor... but he wouldn't recomment that.

Matt has a field mouse named Dor, he found them in his room of the guild a while back and tamed it using scraps of food. It can do a couple of tricks, come when he whistles and follow a command to hide. Matt generally lets Dor do her own thing, and never takes her on missions. 


Fears:

- Matt has a crippling fear of counter spells, given the nature of his magic when runes are pulled rom hsi skin it is very painful for him and brings him many terible memories, if he sees a spell sucker he will mostly likely fo into a panic attack

- his other phobia is being trapped, this is less claustrophobia and more a fear of being confined in general no matter the space, if he is trapped in a room he will attempt to escape sometimes with drastic effects. However, he can squirm through small spaces such as airducts just fine when he feels he is in control

Mental illnesses

-Matt takes medication for his depression and PTSD this helps him interact with other people, without it he seems unnaturally calm and even harder to read, he may say more hurtful things and will wish to sleep more, becoming apathetic towards his jobs and may not want to move at all. He almost seems like a different person in this state.
- He also seems to be a bit of a sociopath, as he cannot feel emotions well nor understand them from other people, though he is very good at manipulating them if he has to

Design Notes


-his hair actually has a slight green hue at the tips occasionally (he dyes that part himself)
-his eyes can be a brown or blue (he wears blue contacts) but his pupil is actually a brown shade
-unless he has to change he will wear his vest (its just v useful)
-his torso is laced with scars and a few on his legs (he tries to keep his arms free of them as its hard to make his runes work on scar tissue)
-he always has a tracking rune and a killswitch one on his back NOTE: color is important
-you are allowed to make up runes for him (or use the ones in the gallery)
- he has a nick in his right ear (dont ask how or when he wont say)
