MATER DE PHASMATA

vetus ♱ placidus ♱ obscurus ♱ arcanus

Amidst the mists and fiercest frosts,
With barest wrists and stoutest boasts,
He thrusts his fists against the posts,
And still insists he sees the ghosts.

"Even in the grave all is not lost." —Edgar Allen Poe

An ancient, ethereal entity, Vesper is the maternal guardian of both the living and dead. With her she carries thousands of years, thousands of resting memories; tears and heartbeats, rain and fog. Within a sepulchral rift between life and death, she tends to timeworn graves abandoned long ago and serves as comforter to lost souls who cannot pass on.

With her soul in two halves, tethered to one world by the magic of her arcane white veil, she exists in constant limbo— a rare, profound state of existence. She knows of all life's tribulations, and all those faced in death. But with her she carries the way to her home, and her home is open to all.

Design

• Vesper does not have claws and never shows anger or aggression. She is solely a benevolent entity.

• Vesper's mask, composed of a material that cannot be found in the mortal world, cannot be removed. Without it, Vesper's spirit would have nothing tying it to the physical realm and she would evaporate from existence.

• Vesper's fur is always very soft and clean— she never appears to become matted, unkempt or dirty.

• The blue parts of Vesper's fur are littered with tiny sparkles, almost like glitter, that shimmer when they catch the light just right.

• The cross over Vesper's eye on the left side of her mask is not merely decorative— the mark is indicative of the fact that, technically speaking, she is blind to the living in that eye, and with it may only see the spirit world. Conversely, her right eye is blind to phantoms and may only see the mortal world.

Trivia

• Vesper does not have a reflection, nor can she be captured in photos. Attempts to look upon her with binoculars or in a camera lens are in vain.

• Vesper is often accompanied by small purple or blue wisps, which either appear as orbs of gentle light or glowing moths.

• Vesper moves on land via directly registering— putting her hind paws directly in the print of the corresponding forepaws as she walks or runs.

• One can make direct contact with Vesper via an EVP Recorder or "Spirit Box," though communication would be incredibly irregular and perhaps unreliable. However, no one has thought to try and very few have even been given the chance to.

HOLLOWVALE

Hollowvale is the name given to the metaphysical realm that exists inexplicably within a gap between the world of the living and the land of the dead. Taking the form of a foggy pine forest where the night is endless and the moon is always full, Hollowvale is home to hundreds of spirits whose remains have come into contact with the domain by some unknown mean. While their graves and effigies scatter themselves along the forest paths, the ancient power sleeping in the soil and sky facilitates the spirits's ability to walk every night as though it were Hallows' Eve.

As a result of this, while the forest may seem unwelcoming, empty and perhaps frightening at first glance, it is truly a vibrant place where phantoms from lifetimes that were generations apart may share stories and find comfort in a timeless existence.

At the heart of Hollowvale lies a clearing— the Sanctum— where the Phantom Matron, Vesper, tends to the mausoleums, tombstones and burial sites of the forgotten cemetery that has entered her domicile and serves as motherly guardian to those who cannot pass on. She is well-loved by the spirits who call that place home.

A BRIEF VISITOR'S GUIDE

• If you choose to venture off the path and into the trees, you will only start to lose your way if you fear becoming lost.

• While there are no malevolent spirits in Hollowvale, there are some who are mischievous. If you feel a chilling presence behind you, know that you are not in danger.

• If a spirit appears and asks you a question, always tell the truth.

• If you are outside of the Sanctum and wish to speak to any spirits, perform the necessary ritual properly and carefully. Always be the first to state your name and ask only polite questions.

• Do not fall asleep in Hollowvale if you can help it. Time passes differently, and the outside world may be different than you remember when you return.

• If it is raining when you arrive, be reverent— someone is being mourned.

• Do not bring religious artifacts to Hollowvale.

• Any objects or trinkets you find on the ground are gifts meant for you, but leave lie anything that you find hanging in trees or resting upon tombstones and graves.

• When you begin to see wisps or orbs drifting in the trees and on the path ahead of you, know that you are close to the Sanctum.

• Know that while in Hollowvale, any photos you try to take by any means will be distorted and uninterpretable, and it is impossible to contact the outside world.

• Leave coins on tombstones and you may receive some ethereal knowledge in return.

• If you should encounter graves along the forest trail, take a moment to pay your respects, especially if they are unmarked— the nameless spirits are incredibly lonely.
