Kato is the bassist of Whole Note, known for being an exemplar of the strong, silent, intimidating tough guy type. He has a lot of fans that like that appeal, naturally, but he clams up when they get too close, which just makes them squeal and speculate even more. Behind the scenes, he's very gentle and caring, often looking after the other members of the band and ensuring that everyone's needs are met. However, he has trouble voicing his own needs, thinking that he can handle them all himself or they're irrelevant to the situation at hand, which leads to a lot of "Why didn't you say so?" from the other guys when it turns out that Kato forgot to buy himself lunch or something along those lines. He's also rather shy and nervous in his own way, sticking his hands in his pockets when uncomfortable and needing things to occupy his hands on occasion.

When Liam introduces Shana to the group, Kato doesn't feel as shy around her because Liam is vouching for her. The more he sees of her, the more an attraction develops, and he finds himself hooked in by her assertive personality and tendency to be overt with her charms. The two eventually strike up a relationship, and Kato reveals himself as a major cuddler. He appreciates being handled with affection, and everyone is surprised by how lovey-dovey he becomes.
