Kings and devils, they all burn the same. Think you can do better?

A cute little cat kid, and part-time vagrant with a mischievous streak, Misaki has her own idea of how to live and hates being told what to do. Captivating and peppy, she can spin up the sweetest words, the perfect excuses and pull the most innocent of babyfaces out at the drop of a hat, but is entirely independent and holds some unusual secret goals. She is relatively fearless of people of any creed, can be a brash chatterbox and a bit of a prankster, and though she seems pretty innocuous from afar she has a vaguely cruel edge. She is quick to raise her voice in anger, imagines up fairly morbid punishments, and she can be quickly - and rather harshly - judgmental. Her everyday neighbors chalk it up to an agitated, neglected child trying to look tough, and this is fine by her. She manipulates whatever necessary to keep adult eyes off her back, and this includes playing up her appearance. She has little faith that those around her will even listen to her real concerns, and is sure those that do listen won't have the strength to make a difference.

When Misaki's on warpath, methods are extreme even by a kid's fantastical standard, making flagrant use of her blazing aura. Since it's rare for a Life Fountain aura to take such an offensive form, her firepower is often mistaken for standard magic, rumor being that she was a magician's orphan. As her self-discipline - and knowledge of the city's dark side - grows, she hones it into a selective weapon. Her goal is to find the shapeshifters who managed to put a stop to the first LF-formed shifter hunting brigade (nobody is sure how she learned about that), and burn as many other shifters she can lay her flaming paws on. Growing more aggressive and self-contained over the years, her energy comes in both good and bad flavors: her spite brings torturous, deliberate burnings on anyone deemed an enemy, but she is also fiercely, even violently, protective in defense of those who keep her life stable. It takes a while to dredge up real trust instead of her friendly kid facade, but once attached, her loyalty is unfaltering - though she loathes to admit anything so mushy. Those she cares for the most know the least about her inner workings. As a child she can be bossy, and immature when things go wrong, naturally. She has a lot of pride and hates admitting mistakes or weaknesses - don't call her a petulant child (especially when it's the truth). In spite of it all, no one doubts her firepower once she lets them really have it.

For a Life Fountain, she is exceptionally energetic and her aura causes more harm than healing; even with focus she has never been able to heal a creature besides herself. The fact that she is a LF at all is only known to a handful, mostly revealed on accident. Despite being quite young by both human and LF (semi immortal) standards, and having a fair bit of pride in what she is, her birth and origin are a mystery.

  Species Notes

Misaki is a Life Fountain who appears very young, her aging not yet staggered as it is in adults. She is quick and athletic in comparison to many other LFs who are often on the slow and weighty side. Her aura comes in a colorful flamelike form that is usually withheld, and expelled quickly with high-pressure blasts, or slowly through body heat. It has a powerful healing effect on herself, but causes nearly anything else to burn on contact (not just shapeshifters, though they are her favorite target).

When she was very young, she only emitted aura by exhaling fire in straight blasts. In her teens, she is able to conjure more complex shapes in the air around her as whips, spears or explosive shields. Her most lethal weapon is molten matter superheated within her body, expelled through the skin at a close range while she near-instantly heals/replenishes herself.

With her powerful healing aura she hides any injuries from her hunts and general roughhousing, and can eat and inhale even toxic substances; notably smoke inhalation does not bother her at all. So it may be said that she has the typical LF careless streak, because the consequences of fire and fights on her body are negligible.

  Trivia
  • She can leap upward like a rocket, useful for a chase or getaway. Of course, falling doesn't seem to hurt her or cause lasting injuries, so there is nothing to deter her from jumping as much as she wants. PARKOUR BABY
  • Physically rough even in affection, using her feather weight and agility to boot. She hops on shoulders, musses up hair, punches backs, tips chairs -- and never underestimate what a child's earnest hug can do to shift someone's opinion. Her lack of physical strength begins to frustrate her, though, as her shifter-hunting wages on.
  • She loves eating fish, grilled fish in the morning, steamed at night, shellfish, fish skin and squid. She can cook - well, she can operate a stove - but just has no patience to catch her own (plus she doesn't like being stuck on open water). Since she’s a LF she has an iron stomach, and isn’t above using this to gross other kids out.
  • Misaki has a lot of self-confidence especially when comparing herself to those her age (if we really know her age), and a short temper. She does not get along well with schoolkids and is shameless when it comes to picking fights because she often gets away with it. She dislikes loud people, but likes quiet listeners and will stand up for someone who looks like they need a loud voice in their defense.
  • She's probably the kind of kid who looks down on those who are into 'mainstream boy bands' and makeup and dolls. She is however a little jealous of those who can keep their hair neat, mostly because she hates brushing her untameable hair.
  • Has a pet rabbit and good number of rabbit plushes. Amazingly, she hasn't harmed her pet at all but it seems terrified of her. Many animals are and tend to hide or lie low around her, as a result she's a pretty disinterested in them (to Pal and K's dismay).
  • A quick learner who’s decent at most games (video, card, board). She's adept with physical activity too, but other kids don't really want to play around with her. She hates losing, even if she's just trying something new, and will practice/strategize diligently in secret. Predictably, she gets along best with people who aren't competitive.
  • Good at math and relatively quick pickup in anything involving stats or chance. In terms of studies, she dislikes having to read or write for long periods of time.
  • Intends to permanently burn, doesn't actively aim to kill. It's happened... but followup actions from shifters gets her blood boiling again. The only real fear is human companions finding out. As she gets older, her actions become more erratic; more likely to let a shifter walk, but also more likely to have a violent outburst.
  • Dislikes/mistrusts computers. But takes robots very seriously for someone who isn't all that technologically savvy (probably getting it from watching her guardian RR, a mechanic, and the consequences of his robot 'incident'.)

- You know what’s best for you, but not everyone will understand that. Just take it easy on them, okay?

A local eccentric and inventor who took her in, to keep her off the streets at night. While a nice gesture on the outset, it seems he was more concerned with keeping his neighbors from interrupting his projects with their silly witch hunt targeting a pint sized trash-arsonist. Though rumored to have been a genius, he is, in Misaki’s opinion, adequate. A bit absent minded, he is not a very vigilant guardian but never resorts to baby talk, always backs her up and - most importantly - never forces her to do anything. The freedom to come and go actually made her quite comfortable in his home, and she thinks it only fit to pay appropriate deference by listening to his idea dumps (mystifying), taking care of stuff he forgot (don’t call them chores!), and chasing away reporters/tech company spies. While she’d never trust RR with everything on her mind - that’s for for his own safety - she feels safe hanging around or hiding behind him in everyday situations. RR’s indifference and conversation habits seems to baffle teachers, angry neighbors and cops; he’s an unusual parent but then, she’s not a normal kid.

Misaki has never been afraid of confrontation with RR himself, seeing him as just another hapless human, perhaps one especially easy to sucker with an innocent-kid act. But she was always (though she’d never admit it) a little daunted by the power of machines he’d just casually spin up. Since his final invention’s malfunction and his subsequent breakdown, Misaki has become especially protective of him, perhaps bridging denial. Having to play adult has taught her a little more discipline, but she prefers living with him in his current state than moving away, to be by herself or (god forbid) under stricter parenting. ‘Adequate’ homes are harder to find than you’d think!

- You're just the sweetest little thing, I'm sorry that I worry...

An upper-floor roomate and sort of self-made housekeeper. She is a timid homebody who's good at cooking and making the house look pretty. She fawns over Misaki, totally oblivious to any bad business, and Misaki fawns over her even more because she's nice to have around. Okay, she tries a little too hard to get Misaki to brush her hair sometimes, but her lack of force makes life easy. It is because of Miss Three's assistance that Misaki can continue to live under RR’s roof.

The only point of contention (not worth bringing up with Miss Three herself, of course!) is that she’s even more defenseless and soft-hearted than RR. Luckily she's rather easy to fool and prefers to stay indoors and within their neighborhood, or she might catch Misaki leaping buildings after a shifter one night, and probably pass out in terror.

- I've never seen one with such limitless energy - you could do a lot of good, or else a lot of...

Quiet ex-army guy who works at the same university as RR, Misaki met him while hanging around in the mailroom and asked RR to lend him a room in their house; now he boards with them a few times a year, whenever he isn't traveling around doing deliveries for work.

He has a ton of patience and never lashes out at people annoying him, talking over him or even attacking him. The kids at school think he's cool. He seems strong but pretends not to be, which is cool to her. He coaches Misaki in combat techniques, and although it's pretty slow to do things his way, he probably knows what he's doing and it's helped a bit with handling her fire (she doesn't want him to see her losing control of that, somehow it's even more embarassing than Miss Three or RR or K seeing). Sometimes he inspires Misaki to try meditation, but sitting still for so long is difficult.

- We're friends, right? You don't have to take on everything alone.

Misaki's wide eyed classmate who happens to live on the same street. Him being a goody-two shoes animal-lover, Misaki was happy to let him tag along. He'd be the perfect smokescreen: hanging out with the neighbor would make RR and Miss Three happy, and simple, inoffensive K complemented her cute kid persona. The only problem? Well, that cliched heart of his was stronger than she expected... by instinct or otherwise, K seems to catch onto her nightly firestarter activities and naturally takes it upon himself to whine about being careful, not hurting anybody (as if that wasn't the point), and meddling when he works up the guts (more often than she'd like). Unfortunately for someone so sensitive he seems to lack any sense of self-preservation and can't seem to understand that he's just giving her something else to worry about. Maybe he hopes he can play hero, 'save the shifters' and 'bring world peace' or whatever hopeless fantasy he's holding onto, but she won't give him the satisfaction.

During schooldays, she plays nice and K naively falls for it every time. She gets revenges in little ways, dragging him into pranks and tussles, but K seems to coast through everyday troubles without worry... and taking things further, actually trying to harm him (or do something like make him fail classes) would be pretty pointless. At least he's not the worst person to have on her side. He's a patient listener, is perhaps overly forgiving, can defend himself from meagre schoolyard bullies, and can keep a secret well. For better or worse, he'd never do something so devious as tattle on his friend who seriously asks him otherwise. And yeah, he is getting stronger, albeit not fast enough. It's too bad she doesn't have time to wait around.

Awkward fact: Misaki's family call her Misa, as will Pal sometimes. But K always calls her Misaki... because his mom is called Misa.

- I wish I could help you, but I'm not sure what you want from me.

A shy kid who shares a few of their classes, a third wheel to Misaki and K's everyday shenanigans. Pal is kind of an oddity; she's a fearless master to all kinds of animals, seems to live alone and work all kinds of cool odd jobs, but cowers the moment some mean classmate yells in her direction. Misaki has spent quite a bit of time chasing off bullies and trying to convince her it's OK to hit back, although Pal would clearly never do such a thing. Though she seems easy to push around, Pal is far more indepent than K is, and uninterested in justice or morals. She is apathetic even as Misaki's nightly 'garbage runs' come to light for her, almost seeming to be supportive of the lengths Misaki will go to to protect what's hers.

Pal's honest ambivalence is intriguing and it's something of an ongoing to challenge to rile her up and Misaki hasn't quite succeeded yet. That, and the occasions Pal does bring in one of her lizards and inadvertently terrorizes the class, keeps Misaki amused, enough to get over the frustration over how wimpy Pal can be in mundane situations.

Recruit, might be useful

A Life Fountain who works somewhere in the city. A big guy, powerful enough to match Misaki's aura, and knows a lot about shapeshifters for some reason! He's just too lazy to try doing anything about of it. Not to sound like one of those boring teachers, but he could be a lot of help if he learned to apply himself.

Nemesis
- Keep on pushing, you little troll, soon enough you and yours will end up in pieces!

Misaki's targets were largely the big-eaters - careless, overly bloodthirsty shifters. The major exception, and what wouldhave been her biggest catch, was Fen, the young model/idol/media darling who she was initially sneaking after out of spite for his fans among her classmates. (What's so cool about this guy?) But she spots him changing form shortly before merging into a crowd by Central's docks and the penny drops. As a highly public figure in his default persona, and an expert at blending into crowds when he drops the act, Fen would be hard to catch in isolation, so she chooses to strike a smallish meeting in a largely empty building - but Fen escaped the flames with the surprise appearance of a very powerful ally.

Unused to losing a target and bitter about the failure of her and her predecessors to let such a monster set down his roots, Misaki holds him in both high regard and total hatred. He didn't even escape on his own power! With Fen buckling down on security, making louder and clearer proclaimations of not being a shifter (those idiot doctors and scientists and corporations must be in on it too), and only becoming a bigger superstar as days go by, Misaki knows she's going to have a big challenge on her hands, one too dangerous to share. Not that she's got any concrete proof beyond her own two eyes... While mulling over her next moves, she occasionally leaves accusations on his social profiles. But in a sea of trolls and other combative users, her truth is drowned out. Just how far have Shifters seeped into things?
