Personality

Living most of his life cooped up either in his room or the halls of the palace, Vegas is pretty quick on the fly; he has a vast range of magical abilities and can usually think up something to get him or his partner out of trouble quickly. However, having only his handmaid to talk to when he was living in the palace, he is not very good at conversation and lacks the suave charisma one might expect a prince to have. Vegas learned from a young age to be tough and brutish but he never truly lost his kind-hearted and friendly nature; he only learned to hide it very well. He can be blunt and intimidating at first, but once he is comfortable with someone, he speaks more freely and compassionately.

The only person whom he truly favors over all others (besides his parents) is Silas, his partner.

History

Vegas was raised by his uncle, his father's younger brother. His uncle was harsh and often times curt with young Vegas, he was the bastard child of an Alicorn and a Dragon (his parent's secret relationship was looked down upon by the court) and many treated him as such. Vegas never truly knew the circumstances of his birth until later in life, though he wasn't a favorite of anyone he was still royal blood, still a prince, so he did live a typical pampered life.

After his uncle seized the throne, the Northern Dragons' kingdom closed their borders to most if not all trades. The new king had many secrets to hide and was only a tiny bit paranoid about other's snooping around his kingdom. He also was a very traditional leader, though his father and grandfather had ruled the same way for many, many centuries, it was his father's turn towards more open and friendly communications with other leaders that turned his son against him. Vegas' uncle strongly believes in the old ways of war and conquering - a way that has been pushed out by years of new leadership all across their lands.

As Vegas grew older, he became bored with the strict rules about leaving the palace grounds, he was often confined to his room if his uncle was particularly paranoid that day - his only visitors being his handmaid, Lyra, to bring food. However, Vegas soon learned little tricks via magic tomes Lyra would sneak in for him and with her help, he would sneak out on days where the caverns of the mountain were just too boring for him. It was one of these days that he met the traveling cleric Silas.

Vegas had snuck out to the forested side of the mountain, intent on finding, well, anything of interest when he quite literally stumbled upon someone hunting for mushrooms. After both partied decided the other was not going to harm them, Vegas accompanied Silas around the forest, helping him where he could. In return, Silas taught him about different plants with magical capabilities. Vegas was surprised that Silas risked coming this close to the palace as his uncle was usually very adamant about keeping magic users of any kind away (fearing they might find out his secrets) but nonetheless agreed to keep Silas' secret. They continued to meet in the same part of the forest for weeks and Vegas was even able to come up with an elaborate excuse to bring Lyra to meet Silas one time.
Meanwhile, unrest within the Northern kingdom grew. Towns were suffering from lack of food and other supplies due to strict trading laws and even the dragons within the palace were growing to distrust and outright hate their king; the common folk went hungry while the court and royals stayed fat. Distracted by Silas, Vegas did not notice this growing rebellion until he was found sneaking out. Luckily, he was able to get back before anyone would know the true meaning of his disappearances but his uncle was not happy. In a fit of rage, Vegas' uncle revealed to him who his parents were and what had truly happened to them. Though his blood boiled with the knowledge of the truth, Vegas was able to keep relatively calm and was unharmed. Instead, he was confined to his room until further notice.

Again with the help of Lyra, Vegas was able to formulate a plan; one that took quite a bit of waiting but with the help of those who hated the king, they were able to force his hand. The first steps were quite elaborate, but the final part was all Vegas' doing. In a rigged trial in which a unicorn was accused of treason (the usual accusation for a slave unwilling to cooperate, usually resulting in death), Vegas revealed to the court and the members of the rebellion present what his uncle had done, successfully turning the lot against him. The unicorn was spared and the king was sentenced to death instead (for murder and treason) and killed by Vegas himself. The trial wasn't over yet though, Vegas, feeling guilty as well, punished himself for having been complacent and blind to his uncle's actions - he felt his mixed bloodline had no claim to the throne anymore and did not overthrow his uncle for it - his punishment to himself was to take the one thing that many would say made him a dragon (this is the highest punishment, next to death, usually for traitors and those who abandoned battles dishonorably). The final act of the trial saw Vegas' father, freed from the dungeons by the rebel force, claiming his rightful place as king.

Vegas was brought back to his room to heal. Silas had to be summoned from the village to heal him as Vegas would not allow any of the dragon healers to see to his wounds. Silas stayed in the palace for well over a month, during this time Vegas confessed his growing feelings and attachment to Silas, which Silas accepted and returned.

Vegas healed perfectly well, and with his kingdom on its way back to wealth and prosperity under his father and mother's rule, Vegas felt he needed to leave, opting to travel with Silas. With the border re-opened, Silas and Vegas decided to roam lands they had never seen and help whomever they could along their travels.
