Would That I - Hozier

But even then, what would even happen to me if I hurt somebody? Nothing because I'm too fucking jacked and immortal, see?

Summary

Dairoe is a Lampad that, as far as she's concerned, came out "wrong". She's not beautiful like a nymph should be, instead she's muscular and hairy and rough looking. After an attempt to make herself beautiful backfired, she decided that living as a man would be easier. It's been centuries now, and she's always acted like someone else. With a very strong personality and a entitled behavior, she believes she can get anything she wants.

Appearance

The first thing you notice when you see Dairoe is that she's jacked as shit, tall as hell and VERY masculine. She has brown hair, fairly tan skin and fire red eyes. Her jaw is square and she has big eyebrows, along with dramatic sideburns growing even from the middle of her cheeks. Her hair is short and she either slicks it back or wears a hat, though her sideburns often stay the same.

She's very hairy all over, her hands, legs, chest, back, etc. She also has some facial hair, shaving often enough. She has heavy bones and is generally very big all over, especially her arms, hands and back. She has pointy ears that are generally hidden.

Her eyes are fire red which is the most unusual thing about her appearance (even more than the ears) and they flare up with some of her emotions, looking like the fire of a candle.

She usually wears button up shirts and pants.

Personality

Dairoe is a very charismatic individual, confident and extroverted. She's strong and she knows it, and proud and sometimes even unfair to others. Gentlemanly, specifically interested in beautiful women.

Entitled, believing she'll get everything she wants and usually does get it. Charming and an excellent actress, not exactly burdened by not being 'herself' all the time because it's been so long the lines are extremely blurry, though she doesn't see it as a bad thing-- she's used to live several timespans around humans who don't suspect a thing, and she doesn't involve herself much, emotionally, considering that she'll outlive them always. This means that she has an emotional distance to a lot of people, her interactions can be somewhat shallow, especially when she's attracted to someone.

On the other hand, she can get deeply philosophical. She has a very sensitive love for nature and living beings which she often rejects as to not appear 'weak' according to herself, but it's there. She's very afraid of showing vulnerability, after so many lifetimes of having to deal with mourning and being alone, and in general shes's not used to Feeling Bad and Dislikes it. Often lashes out when she feels vulnerable, and deals TERRIBLY with her negative emotions. Sometimes she'll even bottle it up and they'll make her irritable in other aspects.

Stubborn and headstrong. Capable of being really mean and abusive, doesn't think morals apply to her specifically after so long. In a way she really thinks she can do anything she wants, but she does appreciate life and wouldn't hurt people just because, it's just that she looks at the big picture only when she thinks that. Not that much of an absolute jerk though she really pulls off the part.

Story

Dairoe is like a million years old this is gonna be long aff

Back in Ancient Greece, Lampads had been created by Zeus to aid Hecate in her travels across the underworld. Equipped by a mystical torch each, they fulfilled their journey and stayed around, guarding, guiding. More lampads had been born after that, and Dairoe was one of them. Despite not seeing much light apart from their torches, lampads were still beautiful nymphs and Dairoe- while she remembers having a childhood- feels like it all went to fast until she grew and grew, not nearly as beautiful as it was expected. The rest of the lampads rejected her subtly, giving her jobs that would alienate her, travel big distances and not interact much with anyone.

The underworld was lonely, and so was Dairoe.

At some point, she spotted a foreign entity try and enter the place she was guarding, to get deeper into the underground. She approached them, and found out that the entity was an automaton named Ophira. She was made of gold and missing an arm- Dairoe understood that Ophira had to get to a place where she would be tried and perhaps if she was lucky enough, obtain a new arm.

It seemed dangerous, and in a way Dairoe could understand being a misfit like her. She didn't even care that much about her job nor the people who put her in there anyway. She let Ophira go and then, as Ophira came back, Dairoe decided to go to the surface with her.

It wasn't exactly allowed, they had to be sneaky- and they succeeded! They though nobody saw them, and each parted ways when they were out.

Dairoe discovered the outside world- being a mythological creature should have been enough to be considered a big deal, but Greeks loved beauty and Dairoe didn't seem like a nymph physically. She was thought of as a monster, at least to her eyes. She thought she'd be respected there, by mortals, at least.

Maybe she couldn't alter her appearance among lampads in the underworld, but the powers of her torch allowed her to create illusions for mortals. She used her powers to appear as a beautiful woman so she'd be adored. She approached a village and soon enough became almost like a deity to them, receiving food, pleasure and respect.

This went on for years until Dairoe realized her powers had a secondary effect, they made humans go crazy in the long run. A handful of people, including her first love, lost their minds completely because they had too much exposure to her torch, and Dairoe couldn't bear with the fact. She couldn't keep using it anymore. She knew that being a beautiful nymph is what she should be, so she left in order to find the physical form she deserved.

It was straightforward to find ancient magic spells to grant her what she wished, and so she did; she asked the spell to give her the body she was supposed to have. Poor choice of words had an opposite effect on her and her body became even more masculine. She stopped the spell immediately, having to accept that she'll never have the body of a nymph as she wanted.

It was heartbreaking, but she left the village. She left her identity altogether, and built a new persona. A man with the same name, the start of her new life.

For years, centuries now, she has dressed and performed like a man successfully. She found out that it came to her easily, she could get closer to beautiful women like this, respected because he was big and strong, with enough personality and confidence to take on anyone.

She found out that her torch wasn't the source of her powers. Even when she left it behind, she noticed she could manipulate any source of light and create illusions from it. She didn't use it usually, but it was an appropriate tool if ever needed. She picked up smoking because of this, to have a casual item to lit in case of an emergency.

Many times she has been 'discovered' as being 'actually a woman', some of those she was threatened to be killed, but it all ended up in her favor in the end. She has been through too many lifetimes to care for specific moments, and generally has found it rather easy to live as a man so far.

Aether Carcere

Fast forward, she was invited to a job interview for the role of a prison guard. She took it, and as she was being interviewed discovered that they wanted her specifically due to her species, as it was an interdimensional prison of maximum security. It was a big deal of a job! She was perfect for it, and was pretty excited, actually.

She met her coworkers, all very... Not-human, and saw Ophira again! And she had her arm! She also met Sharon, an underworld mythological creature like her. Imelda, Aldair and Ebel were some of her notable coworkers... And they all decided that the prison should change.

See, they received notice that the prison was going to change security levels. No longer only receiving inmated on the death row, the general procedures and warden were about to change. That's why her and the rest of her group stepped in and built a fake warden, Xzavis. Good enough that it would fool their superiors into accepting him, the plan was working perfectly. They could control him and do whatever they wanted in the prison.

The initial intent was to harness the aether that the prison floated in, and use it to develop the place more like a gigantic interdimensional trade center with the whole group as founders. In the meantime though, they had to make it believable enough.

Dairoe 100% got off on sabotaging the inmates- or rather, making them sabotage each other. She was also still on 'maximum security' mode and treated inmates like they were extremely dangerous.

Nothing they did really mattered to her, until suddenly Imelda killed herself.

This was extremely unsettling, they found her body at the same time as the inmates. They couldn't cover it up, and Sharon specifically lost her control over water and made it overflow- unfortunately, it hit Xzavis in such a way that he started malfunctioning.

Dairoe didn't know how to deal with her emotions after that, and none of them knew that Xzavis was malfunctioning. At this point they couldn't control him, and he didn't even know he wasn't real.

And the most important thing to Dairoe at the time was that she was everyday more hopelessly in love with Sharon. And Sharon was painfully uninterested in her. Dairoe gave her the worst impression possible always, thinking she was being smooth or at least interesting. It frustrated her, and still...

Things got worse and worse, Xzavis started hiring people they didn't know, talking to the inmates unprompted, and finally- realizing he wasn't alive. It struck him when Dairoe, Sharon and Ophira were in the main control room of the prison, and they had to flee.

After all the horrible things they've done to the inmates, the prison staff's fate was in their hands. They ended up teaming up and freeing most of the inmates for them to use their full potential against an enemy in common: a corrupted, disembodied Xzavis who has control over the whole prison.

In this case, there were two routes: they failed on working together and never got to speak to Xzavis therefore dooming the prison and everyone in there to just float in the void forever, tragically. Or they did team up, worked together and got to speak kindness into Xzavis.

(These last paragraphs were our own prepared story, since this was first made to fit a RP group. Unfortunately we couldn't finish the story with the other players so we came up with our own and preferred version... Which is the good end)

Fortunately, they achieved the latter. Unfortunately, Xzavis resolve was that this whole experiment was a mistake, and nobody deserved what happened, especially not the errors he made.

Xzavis, not being organic or alive, fused with the massive amount of aether that they had been storing for so long and used it to completely wipe out the existence of the prison, reset the timeline as if it never happened and bring everyone involved back in time to the specific point where they were about to be involved with the prison that doesn't exist anymore (for inmates, it was the secont they were about to commit the crime that brought them to the prison. for the staff, it was the second they were contacted to be part of it). All of them do, however, remember everything that happened.

New Timeline

In Dairoe's case specifically she shared her universe with Sharon and Ophira, both of which started working at the prison before her. This meant that they recovered their memories before her, too. So while the memories from the prison hasn't hit her yet, and she's going about her life without suspecting of anything- especially not that she'll meet more immortals like her.

Until Sharon finds her.

And Dairoe doesn't remember her. They meet again, build their relationship again. Dairoe was much nicer without her prison guard persona, and a more open Sharon made her fall in love with her again.

They've traveled together in order to, at least, find Ophira and see if she remembers something that Dairoe doesn't- in fact, it would make sense that, when the time comes, Dairoe remember everything too. This doesn't happen for a few years, however.

In their way, they noticed their universe wasn't untouched. They were crossing the sea and suddenly found themselves somewhere strange with different creatures living there. They found their way back again, but this meant that the universes that were connected in the prison were slowly being entangled again even without the influence of the prison. Even objects that existed in the prison were appearing before them sometimes.

This is the very origin of something that affects many characters' stories (more comprehensive info soon) and how most worlds are merging together.

Sooner or later Dairoe will remember the prison, that's still on development, but it's gonna be cool.

Abilities

As a lampad, she has the ability to manipulate any light source in her hands (originally a torch, she discovered later that lamps also work and nowadays she prefers a lighter) and turn it into a source of mental manipulation, especially to make illusions. For mortals, prolonged exposure to this light can lead to dementia or other mental problems. She can also manipulate fire and is highly resistant to it!

Other nymph features grant her good skin and hair quality, plus immunity to illness and aging. Her bones are thick and heavy and she has trained a lot for years, she possesses a strength that is not nymph-like; she's much stronger than a human, but not stronger than a creature that has natural superhuman strength. She can also see in the dark!
