Personality

Noh can be a difficult person to get close to, given his tendency to avoid or minimize interaction at all cost. Conditioned to solitude, he is less than eager to assimilate into a more social society, but does the bare minimum to earn a living. While he is a man of (very) few words, he is always absorbing details of his surroundings, both of the people and the space, whether conscious of it or not. He always remembers the people frequent in his routine, even if he's never spoken to any of them, and this observational skill also benefits his resourcefulness. He's always prepared, and with years of experience surviving in the wilderness, he can make do with very little. Unfortunately, those many years of solitude not only shaped him into a survivalist, but also a bit of a short tempered grump. It wouldn't take much to push him into a fight, given his tendency to communicate more with his body than words. Alas, for all his flaws, he is not a bad apple. There is the potential there for meaningful connections, and theoretically speaking, those he does grow close to would have themselves a very watchful guard dog.

Trivia

  • He can speak, he doesn't like to. When he does, he generally limits it to one or two word responses, just enough to convey a message. If forced to speak more at length, he might stumble a little over syntax and language since his knowledge is fairly basic.
  • His lack of social skills don't make him an ideal businessman, but his expertise has made him a commodity for those seeking to learn game trails or navigate unfamiliar woods. He's also a great pal to have if you're ever stranded in the wilderness for a while.
  • He spends about an hour every few days meticulously cleaning his hair in a local stream, using oil to detangle. At night he'll tie it up if he has time.
  • He'll only really wear clothes when needing to go into a town or interact with 'civilized' folk. So long as it's not the colder months, he goes without clothes besides foot wrappings.
  • He does shave his face; he doesn't like the feeling of it getting too long.
History

Noh was once a normal child with a normal name, born to a modest family in the human kingdom of Mirrova. Unfortunately, his parents were a superstitious pair, and received dire warnings from a local priest that their son had a strangeness about him--eyes like a harvest moon, hiding a darkness behind them. Of course, there was no way they could have born a witch of a son, but paranoia grew with building hostilities among the kingdom against magic users, and suddenly they were dissecting every little thing. How his mother had felt particularly ill during the pregnancy, or how his father had underpaid a shady textile merchant who'd promised him curses in return...Ultimately, the poor boy was not even four years old when his parents decided their only option was to get rid of him.

Only, they couldn't bare to kill a child, so they opted to let nature do the deed for them. Sneaking the boy beyond Mirrova's walls, they pretended to take him on an adventure, walking deep enough into the woods that they were sure the child couldn't wander his way back, and then they left him with a small basket of treats and a blanket (they weren't animals, after all). He would never see his parents again. It was a wonder he survived that first night, or the next. But somehow, the boy endured. He made do with the basket and blanket he'd been left for a time, and when that ran out, he began to scavenge. One might even suspect it was the very animals of the woods, or the woods themselves, that kept the boy alive that year and beyond. When he was around ten, he first encountered Suliyva, a dark witch who'd spent many years alone herself. She took pity on a boy who was sickly thin and clearly struggling to make it through the winter, and took him in. Suliyva had her own demons, but found comfort in the opportunity to care for an innocent soul. She taught him to speak and understand language, fed him and helped him learn a few more long term survival strategies in the forests.

Through their years together, Suliyva discovered a latent power in Noh; likely the very same power that prompted his parents to fearfully toss him away. This power was innate, primordial--as natural to his being as the heat of the earth's core. But this was not a power he seemed to be able to channel himself. Instead, she feared he was that of a Conduit--a mortal being connected to the earth's natural power, often sought after and used by witches and other magic users to exploit. She gifted him with special sigils on his arms to help protect him--though not completely--from being manipulated or controlled. Of course, she did still benefit from his presence as they lived together, using his natural energy to fuel some of her simpler magic spells.

The pair lived comfortably together, but Suliyva was not a happy soul. In fact, she had been alive far longer than her appearance revealed, and found herself increasingly weary. When Noh was fourteen, after four years spent together, Suliyva went out to gather herbs and never returned. While he never found a body, Noh's connection to her told him that the elder witch had returned herself to nature. It was a devastating blow to the teen, yet again left behind by a guardian figure.

Years later, a man wandered from the foothills of the Mountains, wounded and delirious from a musket bullet to the torso. He ended up in a small trading town, where his wounds were treated, and he lingered for a short while to recuperate from a harsh winter. There, his caregivers realized he was like a proverbial wolf in human skin--he'd never been to a village before. He didn't speak the common tongues (though did seem to understand them), he had no name, but his weather worn skin was decorated in runes that suggested he had been bonded to a witch at some point. For sake of having something to call him, his caregivers decided on "Noh" (No Name). This is the name that stuck as his relationship with the village, and surrounding trade ports, developed. While he continued to disappear into his home in the forests, he would appear now and again to trade for supplies.
