Meruba was the unfortunate product of a liaison between a noble elven sorceress and an orc chieftain. As a result, her mother's family had her father killed, her mother imprisoned, and Meruba abandoned in the streets. She was raised in a corrupt orphanage, where she would often get into fights with other kids for scraps of food. When she turned 6, she was 'sold' to an elven nobleman who brought her to his secluded mansion; it turned out that he 'collected' members of each race that showed combat ability and pitted them against constructs, animals, and most frequently, each other. Meruba was required to kill others to survive.

Eventually, she was able to scrounge enough money to buy her freedom. Unsure of what to do, she wandered around until she found a small village. The village happened to be in the middle of a war with a neighboring Goblin tribe, so she offered her help as a soldier. During this time she met a teifling named Vellia, who she had a small fling with but later became close friends with. Later, while fighting, she was mortally wounded, but was nursed back to health by a Cleric named Clairine. During their time in the militia, they became very close, but eventually went their separate ways, albeit very much in love.

With the money she earned from working in the militia, she traveled to the nearest large city and purchased a great sword, the first big thing she purchased with her own money, that she still uses. With this weapon, she offered her services as a mercenary, often doing jobs for free for poor or homeless families. On one of her missions out into the forest, she was attacked by a bear, quickly fighting it off and making it into a cloak as a trophy, but not before she received her trademark scars. She soon became a hero among the common people, who gave her the moniker of "The Wall" for her unmovable strength and bravery.
