About

Oni is a robot from humble beginnings. Originally a loader and porter, he grew tired and disillusioned to repetitive ordinary life. So when two humans in well-tailored, expensive-looking suits approached him with an offer for something better, he eagerly accepted. They were a wakashu of the yakuza and his kyodai, who could plainly see not only his dissatisfaction, but the strength, work ethic, and respect for authority that would make him valuable to the family. The promise of power, money, and respect that the admittedly romanticized vision of a yakuza life carried with it, and by extension the freedom and excitement, was too much for Oni to refuse.

He used his real name for only a month in the family. He spent his first months’ salary on a cosmetic mod that would make a statement: a pair of gold-plated curved horns sprouting from his forehead and sweeping backward. His friends tried to make fun of him by saying he looked like a hideous oni, but he took the comparison to a powerful supernatural demon who punished the souls of the wicked and protect the innocent from bad luck as a compliment instead. He fully embraced the name, eventually replacing his face plate with one mimicking a neo-traditional oni mask. He has not answered to his legal name since, and only those around for that first month will ever know it.

Now blessed with both free time and expendable income, Oni picked up hobbies for the first time in his life. He learned more about Japanese history and culture (such information was not relevant to his previous job, so he only knew what he overheard from neighbors and coworkers) and fell in love with the traditional paintings and poetry. He has an extensive collection of paintings, statues, weapons, and other artifacts from various periods of Japanese history decorating his home. This love of art spread further to mods; he has several that enhance his performance, but the overwhelming majority are purely aesthetic. Oni was envious of his human brothers’ irezumi tattoos. He found an engraver several prefectures away who was willing to work on robotic plating and immediately made an appointment. Over a period of months, starting with a pair of shishi on his shoulders, he commissioned the engraver for a full set of white body plating in the style of irezumi that when completed would cover his entire body neck to ankles. Some time later, he returned again to add paint and 24kt gold inlay; the engraver had since retired due to pain in his hands, but his daughter had taken over and was able to add the limited black, gray, and red palette and the gold inlay. There is a protective covering over all the plates to protect them from scratches and chips. Oni remains close friends with the engraver and his daughter.

Another smaller but more frequent, and significantly less ostentatious hobby of his is gambling, especially beetle fighting. Unlike fighting fish, roosters, or other animals, beetle fighting rarely does any serious harm to either combatant. Oni found it admirable that, since the beetles were fighting for entertainment and not for a cause, they chose to spare their opponents. It reminded him more of a sumo match than deathmatch. He has about a dozen prized fighting beetles of various species at any given time, and leaves them in the care of beetle-keeping friends or a hired caregiver when he’s away for extended periods.

Story

[Under construction]

Origins & Family

• Nickname: Oni
• Reason for name: Got the horns as his first mod, then others started calling him Oni
• Places lived: Osaka, Kobe, Kyoto
• Relationship with family: Most “family” members have either died or estranged themselves when he joined the yakuza. He’s still extraordinarily close with his yakuza family and his loyalty to them is unparalleled.
• Children: None

Physical

• Height: 5'10"/178cm
• Weight: 190 lb/86kg
• Build: Plating molded to give him the silhouette of lean muscle
• Facial features: Sculpted like a neo-traditional Japanese oni mask
• Eye color: The oni mask's eyes are metallic gold, but his actual optical sensor is electric blue
• Mods: Almost entire appearance is fully customized; "tattooed" with painted engravings on all his plating from the neck down; horns and face "mask"; clawed fingertips and spiked knuckles; has an interchangeable phallic mod
• Style of dress: Almost always wearing a black suit and white shirt and black oxford shoes, with varying degrees of formality with regard to buttons, ties, etc.
• Grooming: Meticulous about his appearance; polishes his plates regularly, cleans both inner and outer workings, keeps tattoos touched up; tries to pop dents and buff out scratches as quickly as possible; keeps clothes clean, tailored, and pressed
• Jewelry: Often wears chains and expensive watches, sometimes rings
• Unique mannerisms: Tends to keep his hands in his pockets

Intellect

•Level of education: Programmed with basic knowledge right out of the factory, and was taught more Japanese history and culture upon joining the yakuza; the rest of his “education” has been personal experience
• Level of self esteem: Confident, sometimes to a fault, but not necessarily arrogant
• Gifts/talents: Reading people, diplomacy, self-defense, sleight-of-hand
• Shortcomings: Overconfident, foolhardy, vengeful
• Style of speech: Soft but firm, clear and carefully chosen, polite by default, tends to use honorifics, more casual around peers and underlings than when addressing superiors
• “Left brain” or “right brain” thinker?: Left
• Artistic?: More an appreciation for it than creating it himself, though he can and has before
• Mathematical?: Yes, just by nature of being a robot; however his brand of analyticity is more logical, situational, logistical than theoretic mathematical. More akin to a human just being “good at math” than an actual mathematician
• Makes decisions based mostly on emotions, or on logic?: Logic in most cases, though anger can quickly take over if he feels he or his loved ones have been disrespected or slighted
• Neuroses: Keeping communication lines private/secret, ensuring civilians have plausible deniability, or even better don’t get involved at all
• Life philosophy: Live for today, fight for tomorrow; enjoy what you have while you can
• Religious stance: Shinto
• Cautious or daring?: Daring in what he decides to do, cautious in how he chooses to do it
• Most sensitive about/vulnerable to: Defending his own honor or that of his superiors and loved ones, upholding his own moral code
• Optimist or pessimist?: Realist, leaning toward pessimist
• Extrovert or introvert?: Extrovert
• Level of comfort with technology: Comfortable

• Primary reasons for breaking up with people: Loss of interest
• Level of sexual experience: High
• Story of first kiss: Casual makeout with a random girl at a gang party, initiated by her
• Story of loss of virginity: Was taken to a brothel by his yakuza brothers shortly after he got his genital mod
• Social standing: Equally at home with others or by himself; has only a handful of close friends but is friendly with most everyone, goes out of his way to avoid burning bridges
• Most comfortable around: Daisuke
• Oldest friend: Daisuke
• How does he think others perceive him?: Reliable and trustworthy to those who know him, intimidating and fearsome to those who don’t
• How do others actually perceive him?: Pretty much that, though those who know him also tend to find him to be good polite company in general - not boring or awkward, not too boisterous or annoying, doesn’t overstay his welcome

• Life goals: To gain honor and wealth and bring it to those in his care
• Dreams: To have the most extensive Japanese art/antique collection in the world, to rise in rank but not to rule the organization
• Greatest fears: To become more of a burden than an asset, for his actions to harm, inconvenience, or reflect poorly on his superiors or the group
• Most ashamed of: His early life, original function, and the way he let people treat him - joined the yakuza to gain enough power and notoriety that they would leave him alone from then on

Evan

Love interest

Evan is a gardener for the mob boss Oni and his cohorts came to the States to meet. His employer has little regard for robots, and neither do his underlings. Oni interrupts one of their beatings, but leaves Evan to clean himself up. Evan tracks him down off-duty to thank him. They continue to meet by chance, which usually leads to Oni getting Evan out of trouble and Evan trying to repay him, until they begin to meet more intentionally. Oni finds Evan adorable and endearing, and enjoys listening to him talk about his passions and teaching him about his culture. He will defend him with his life without hesitation. If anything could ever shake Oni's resolve or loyalty for his family or make him reconsider his way of life, it would be Evan.

Omae Masato & Tsumori Daisuke

Friends

Masato is the straight man of the group. He is a man of few words, and the few he uses are carefully chosen. He is remarkably observant and analytical. He's hardly prudish, but much prefers to spend his personal time alone with a book; otherwise it tends to lead to him wrangling the other two and keeping them out of trouble. Oni is hardly put off by that; he knows Masato wouldn't try if he didn't care.

Daisuke was the one who saw Oni on the build site at his old job and convinced Ichiro to recruit him. He could feel the dissatisfaction radiating off him then and has been finely in tune with Oni's emotions since. Unlike Masato, who reads people through careful observation, Daisuke intuits it passively. He always seems to know what Oni needs and when, be it a joke, a drink, or something to punch, and is the first one to make sure he gets it, often before Oni realizes he needs it.

Fujikawa Ichiro

Commanding officer, mentor

Mr. Fujikawa is Oni's primary superior. He is a shategashira, or lieutenant, with even higher ranking senior members above him. He is stern, quiet, and reserved, but cares greatly for his men. Most of them see him as a mentor or father figure, and Oni is no different. Ichiro was the man who approached Oni on the job site to ask if he was interested in joining, and has been his commanding officer ever since. He expects obedience and diligence from those under him while on the job, and respectful behavior representative of the family elsewhere, but is known to be more forgiving than other shategashira. If his men get into trouble but he believes they did the right thing, Ichiro often seeks leniency for them, or else offers to take the punishment in their stead.
