SUMMARY

Dennis is a university professor at Tempest and the mind behind the wonder that is the Weather Machine.

PERSONALITY

Dennis is the hard-working, quiet, generally annoyed, incredibly intelligent scientist/engineer/mind who is credited or blamed (depending who you ask) for the Age of Lights and the subsequent Lights Out Era. He's the genius behind the Weather Machine, a device he'd rather leave behind and focus on other projects. Even though he came up with many helpful inventions, his failures associated with the death of the WM has left the collective mind of the City to blame him for it. This has soured his mood. He's a pessimistic depressive with a penchant for rude comments about pride. He's not intentionally rude or cruel. It's a byproduct of the last major social interactions he had with people were negative ones that were only criticisms of him.

HISTORY

Dennis was a strong willed, hard-working, albeit blunt young boy and eventually young man. When the success of the WM came into fruition in his late thirties, it only further boosted his self-confidence. And to those close to him, it gave off an air of superiority because, well "They never built a post-modern wonder of the world." and the like. While he never verbally expressed his pride, it was quite evident. In the manner he walked and talked and his fame slowly became all he talked about. Even though the Weather Machine brought about his social power, it became less meaningful to him. All that mattered now was keeping up a public image of wit, intelligence and yet City-wide camaraderie. He was a person of the people. Not a weirdo like Vincent or a shut-in like Earl or even a possibly dangerous Tillman. He was Dennis! A chonky oaf who only wanted to help. He's not that any longer. Obviously.

Even though the WM was not the cause of The Lights Turning Off event, it got swept up in the media and public conscious as being one of the "bad machines". Dennis quickly was shunned and retreated from his very public life in the flash of an instant. He, among Vincent and Tillman, were labeled as enemies of the new society, enemies of The City. Those who once praised his work and bowed in awe at his brilliance were now spitting on his newly dug grave, seemingly betrayed by his even existence. Unfortunately, due to a whole series of events that grow more shrouded as the hours, days and centuries pass by, he was quickly toppled from that high seat. He now lives as a scientist hermit, never venturing outside. It's by design, from his humble basement, that he can't see the Weather Machine off in the coastal distance. To say he hates his device is an understatement. Every time it's brought up, he only attributes it as a monument to his young hubris. It's why he's handed off mentoring Darren to Edgwus on the WM. It's not something he ever wants to revisit, even if he literally built it (well designed it anyway, he had a huge team help build it). If it never gets fixed and The City lives in eternal sunshine, sunshine he'll never feel directly again, he's fine with it.

For reasons he won't talk about, he needed to surgically replace his biological eyes. On his own, by himself. He replaced them with biological-interfacing spectrometers. Says it helps him to process light data internally.

TRIVIA

  • Dennis has taken Replets, nanobots that extend his lifespan indefinitely. He's at least 100s of years old.
  • He's ripped out his own eyes and replaced them with cybernetic optical implants.
  • He actually used to be a huge ladies man due to his fame and money status years ago. Misogyinst honestly. He's disgusted with himself now.
  • His repressed self-hatred manifests as starving himself, leading to his current build
  • Due to Tempest's small size and Dennis' vast knowledge about things in science, he teaches multiple classes from Physics I up to graduate level physics.
  • He spends most of his time, when not teaching, being in his optics lab, working with Mitch.

RELATIONSHIPS

76465932_ofaQUpRA8wtHQMw.png

MITCH ADOPTED SON

"Hi Dennis, what are we doing today?"

The only relationship that works is his one to Mitch. Mitch does what he should and Dennis gets some help around. Around a lab that doesn't do much of anything. They have a ... mentor-mentee relationship. One that's not filled with energy or hatred but one that's also not too much in anyway. Silences are common most of the day. They have a very clinical relationship. Mitch does well as he pays attention. Unlike his other spiky haired counterpart..,

DOROTHIE COLLEAGUE

"Heya Stretch, how's the weather up there?"

Dorothie and Dennis get along well enough. Their mutual time in the Age of Lights has formed a bond between them. And the fact they're both somewhat cyborgs also help. Her laid back attitude can sometimes get on his nerves.

CHLOE HIS PRIME MENTEE

"Hey Denny what are we doing tod-OH SHIT, WHOOPS, SORRY!! I didn't mean to break that man!"

His relationship with Chloe is alright. Her inability to pay attention but is naturally upbeat reminds him that he was once like that. And he's not trying to strike that down, he's just spent... centuries the way he is now. Unlike in his 20s and 30s where he had only a few decades. Chloe oddly enjoys working for and with Dennis. Her inability to focus and take shit seriously leads to comedic situations and big issues. Dennis would rather she pay attention but he values her vigor to work above all else.

DARREN GOOD STUDENT

"Dennis, you make understanding complex quantum mechanics so easy."

Darren and Dennis get along well, probably the most out of all the students because Dennis is a good professor and Darren is a good student who does well and understands concepst well.

AMY HIS STUDENT

"WAIT, WAIT! YOU BUILT THE WEATHER MACHINE!? Oh my GOSH!!"

Amy thinks Dennis is super cool but can't help but act like an immature child near him, which drives him crazy. She tries not to piss him off but that's really hard for her. She's okay in his classes. Struggles to behave however.

57941786_ThkcGaVOPJ3x7tW.png

MULLET POOR STUDENT

"Yeah, sure, I'll get right to it."

Mullet doesn't care, pay attention or do his homework. Dennis has been through thousands of students like these so he's more than willing to just let Mullet flail. He's too old and tired to force Mullet to work when they both know they won't.

TANYA GOOD STUDENT

"I look forward to your lecture today, Dennis. Are we starting optics today?"

Tanya is a good student and he really appreciates that. She does her work and does it well without causing mayhem. unlike other students, ahem. Tanya does enjoy his classes and gets a lot out of them. He doesn't know of her work with the Agency which might cause some problems if he knew...
