Yoshino Yumeno (Japanese: 芦乃侑芽乃 Yumeno Yoshino) is a well-known fashion and commercial print model. For the majority of the series, she is a third year at Aobajohsai High and one of the managers for the boys volleyball club. She was the girlfriend of Tōru Oikawa, the captain of the boys' volleyball team.

Appearance

Yoshino is fair-skinned, with green eyes and a distinctive mole under her right eye. She wears her blonde long hair down and has parted to the right. Unlike other girls her age, make-up is always present on her features and it usually consists of pink eye shadow and similar coloured lip gloss. When she's doesn't wear a tracksuit in a muted turquoise colour, she's seen wearing girly and fashionable attires. Furthermore, she accessorizes herself with earrings, a pearl-necklace, and paints her nails with pink polish.

At other times, Yumeno dresses in the Aobajohsai uniform, which consists of mini-skirt with dark brown detailing, a cream-colored vest, a dark red bow, a lavender button-down shirt, and a white blazer.

Personality

Yoshino is shown to be a stereotypical "girly-girl", but somewhat vain and very mischievous character, yet has proven to be serious and understanding when the time calls for it.

A running gag through the series is that Yoshino sometimes acts like a princess and lets her haughty personality shine through, much to her team third-years sorry.  She is then blunt to a cruel degree. She usually loves a little drama and likes to wrangle people for fun or selfish reasons. Yoshino is playful, has a bit of a dirty mind, and has been noted to be rather flirtatious. It is implied that she had already many boyfriends and gets constantly asked out from guys of other teams, making her a heartthrob. Many of her classmates think of her as "on a different level" than most. Some people, unfortunately, take her attractive looks in an unwanted sexual context. Yoshino often gets irritated when people misunderstand her personality, such as when she was enraged and embarrassed when hearing false rumours that she was a slut who had 100 boyfriends.

She claims she was originally a serious volleyball player, but had a lack of self-discipline and lost her drain to continue after losing High Preliminary finals two years in a row. She’s rather relying on luck or opportunity, or simply asks for help from her classmates.

Yoshino has a solid fashion sense. From preparing outfits to a well-named home, she has an eye for trends and fashion. Knowing what is appealing the minute she sees it, Yoshino isn't hesitant to change her surroundings to mirror her own style. Therefore, she’s naturally curious, exploring new designs and styles easily.

Talking with a one of a kind and hearty mind, Yoshino absorbs attention and regardless of her offbeat nature, she is a very popular student.

Though it may not always seem like it, Yoshino realizes that it is not all about herself she is observant, and careful to others' feelings.  She’s often the first to help the first years out a challenging problem, cheerfully giving enthusiastic help and common-sense guidance. Nonetheless, if the issue is about herself, she is bound to maintain a strategic distance from a conflict and lets her inner princess shine through.

She commonly feels sure about dealing with what life tosses at her and is not going to stress a lot over pressure: either how to forestall it or how to reduce it. That doesn't imply that she is neglectful of problems. It implies that she doesn't allow them to be as focal a core interest. She considers most to be stressors as not being worth agonizing over, nor worth her attention. This encourages her keep up a loose and less responsive mentality. The greatest flaw Yoshino has is that she is so focused on immediate pleasures, that she disregards the obligations and duties that make those extravagances conceivable.

Background

In middle school, Yoshino was the Wing Spiker for the Amemaru Girls' Volleyball club. While there, she was  describes as the most passionate player. She made the decision to enter Aobajohsai and joined the volleyball club there. Yoshino spent her first year dedicated to volleyball and stayed most times behind after practice. Eventually she got distracted because of her popularity and focused more on her social needs. She became quickly the most likeable student in her grade. On her birthday she would even get presents from upperclassmen, who then proceed to ask her out. In her second year she lost her passion for volleyball almost completely, as she started showing up inconsistently to practice.
After a problematic practice match with the boys' volleyball club, she realised how much she deteriorated, as she couldn't keep up with the team and was off-sync with them. Ultimately she got into a dispute with her teammates, thus leading to Yoshino leaving the club. After confiding in Oikawa he convinced her to become the boys' volleyball club manager.20170934_sLs8L3LIRFukbHa.gif

Relationships

Aobajohsai High

  • Tōru Oikawa
Some time before, Yoshino starts dating Oikawa. While she was introduced as Seijohs manager, it were hinted numerous times that they only started dating recently. He calls her by a by him given nickname and trusts in her judgement as manager. In exchange, she picks up things about his attitude and feelings quick and admires his determination on court.
Apparently Yoshino refused to date Oikawa, when they were first years, because she wasn't interested in boys her age and only wanted to "go for daigakusei or senpais". Yet he claimed that she never denied her affection towards him. Oikawa, being friendly and goofy, tried hard even after the rejection to become friends with her. Yoshino was rather flattered by his tenancy, but rejected nonetheless because of another relationship of hers at that time. However, in their second year, they were close enough to interact and talk about volleyball. He was the first to notice Yoshino wasn't playing passionately like she used to before. Yoshino told him she was doing what she wanted because she has no fun in playing any more, he noticed that something was wrong and told her that it looks like she was forcing herself saying that. Eventually she made the decision to join the boy volleyball club as a manager because of his comforting words. They're also both equally caring towards each other, as Yoshino comforted him several times. Like after their many losses against Shiratorizawa, where she tries to aggressively cheer him up, while also tearing up. Oikawa on the other hand tend to be a lot calmer in this matter, patting her head and sometimes telling her to let it, whatever the matter is, go.
When around her, Oikawa tries to be attention seeking and wishes for her to compliment and praise him, like his fans do, but Yoshino always sees right through his act. Off court, they tease each other a lot in a playfully way, much to their fellow third years dismay.

Before he went oversea to Brazilian, Yoshino and Oikawa ended their relationship. Having said that, it's heavily implied that they still keep contact years later.

  • Hajime Iwaizumi:
Like most third years in their grade, she thinks highly of Iwaizumi. Hajime seems to be a close friend to Yoshino, as they're on a first name basis. Sharing similar soft-spoken, honest personalities, the two are on friendly terms. It's even implied, that whenever she and Oikawa have relationship troubles, he would probably side with her. He is shown often to be comically hitting him because of his annoyance towards his attention seeking behaviour around Yoshino. Along with the underclassmen she has deep respect for him and often praises him as "Seijoh's number one ace".

  • Issei Matsukawa:
They both appear to be the closest out of the third years in the team, being repeatedly in the same class throughout High School and having mutual respect for each other. They share the same lack of motivation for school and have trouble keeping their grades up. Yoshino was the one who told him his uniform doesn't suit him, which he ironically stated as his current concern. She's also one of the few persons to call him by his given nickname, from Oikawa, "Mattsun".

  • Takahiro Hanamaki:
Though they don't interact much on-screen, they can often be seen chatting in the background. Usually Hanamaki tells her a joke, and she laughs about it. Like she does with Matsukawa, Yoshino calls him by his nickname "Makki".
