Profile

A regular dude working in a team of ship-bound zombie exterminators in a post-zombie-outbreak world, who was bitten by a zombie but somehow managed to retain most of his human mind and a lesser level of decay.

James is a fairly short dude who, in his hood and scarf and loose clothing, could pass for a regular human until you looked closely and saw his strange skin and pale, pale eyes, not to mention the weird metal muzzle covering his nose and mouth. James doesn't need the muzzle necessarily (at least, not any more), but wears it as a psychological restraint and comfort to himself, as well as reassurance for others who might be alarmed to see a freaking zombie standing among regular humans. Taking off the muzzle exposes his weird, long teeth.

As an undead, he is much faster and stronger than before but no longer heals, and while he's very hard to kill or stop, he has to be careful not to be injured badly. He doesn't sleep, or tire, and his flesh and bone is tougher than before but has less sensation. Hunger is James' constant companion, though he's learned to only let it out on very private zombie hunts where he sates his craving for brains with the freshest undeads he can find. James can use his teeth and nails quite effectively in a pinch but is much more deadly with a machete, club, or the long spears the zombie exterminators use on their boats.

James is friends and hunting partners with the shapeshifting beast just called "The Captain" by the boat crew, and it's their influence that possibly helped James retain his humanity through his transformation.

See spoiler for temporary poorly-worded backstory ramble as I recount the original dream to a friend:

long convoluted basically fever dream involved me a shapeshifter monster person taking care of some survivors of a zombie epidemic: they called me "the captain" because I lead out boat expeditions along the undead-infested stinking river/canal that ran by the hideout called the Burrow, just like... trying to cull the zombie population I guess because they kept falling in this river (there were high walls) so it was a good place where we had the terrain advantage of being on a boat, with long spears and cudgels to poke em out the water with and then smash their heads (super stinking and gross though, a lot of them had fallen apart and some had fused together to create gross undead monsters)
anyway one of the crew got bit during one of these trips but he was totally fine aside from this light bite and we were all ??? because we didn't know if getting bit but not getting killed or horribly maimed would turn you into a zombo - so we watched him for a while and then he was like oh boy I feel like you guys are food this is bad, so we locked him in the cabin and he turned into a zombie but also... kept his personality and ability to think? so I hung out with him for a bit and taught him how to deal with the urges of wanting to murder people for brains (because y'know, being a monster myself, same hat)
to get the crew to accept his re-integration and to avoid the possibility of him biting and turning someone else we got him this like, cage muzzle, which he also covered up with a scarf and hoodie because he looked like a gaunt pale zombie even if he wasn't janky or rotten - at first this muzzle was padlocked and only I had the key, much later he graduated to him having the key, later to it not being locked at all, but he still usually kept it on because it made others feel safer and it was a sort of self-restraint reminder to himself as well, kind of a comfort thing
anyway he ended up being a truly valued member of the settlement: extra strong and fast, didn't need sleep, kind of a nice guy, definitely not public about the fact that he had to go out occasionally with me beyond the walls to hunt down the freshest zombie brains possible
his name was James and he was trained mostly to be the cudgel side of the cudgel-and-spear combo but after being turned he upgraded to a machete, which he wore on his back
