Background (draft summary)

A tiefling who always left things up to fate, since they had little control of their life. Scida’s only memory of their parents is the lullabies that their father sang, and the clinking of cookware while their mother made food. They don’t remember any of the words to the lullabies or the recipes though. A goal of theirs is to discover them and have that small connection.

Scida grew up in  a dangerous neighborhood. Windows were always kept shuttered, for fear of break-ins. Times were difficult, but they found comfort in family and their friends. On some days, they’d sneak to secret hideouts that the neighborhood kids had claimed: the room of an abandoned building, a stack of crates carefully rearranged. They were shy as a child, but they grew close with a studious boy and a baker girl.

After their parents died and their home was taken, they hid out in these secret rendezvous points. They didn’t care what happened to them and expressed little emotion, but the meetings with their friends kept them going.

However, the studious boy was moved to another part of the city, and they didn’t hear of him after that. And roughly a year after, the girl’s bakery was being threatened by debt collectors. Scida tried to defend her, but the collector ended up turning on them. As the collector was about the strike them, there was a burst of light and a crackle as a bolt of magic hit him. The man fell still. The baker girl urged Scida to run away, but they were stunned from the experience and the awakened magic coursing through them. The law (knights, etc) came and took them to prison (after due process if applicable).

The adjustment to prison life was rough. While they were worried about their friends, they didn’t defend themself against other inmates, but a few more magic incidents occurred, landing them more severe sentences. They became more withdrawn with each.

One day, an older inmate spoke to them. This person told them that he could teach them how to use their magic, how to change their fate and, in the process, get them both out of there. She could no longer use magic herself, but he had years of experience studying it as a wizard. They snuck in little lessons, eventually escaping after 5 years (somehow, don’t know how).

The person intended on just using them at first, but basically ended up adopting them. They did some crime, but their mentor encouraged them to make a more honest living. They tried to find their friends, but couldn’t find the baker and found but couldn't meet their other friend.

Eventually they decided to set out and see more of the world.
