Imagine the crotchetiest old cat you've ever met. The cat that seems to hate everyone except for that one person and hides under the bed and hisses at anyone who stops by. Now take this cat, and make him into a man over 6' tall. This is Kova. He is quick to anger, defensive of his space, and slow to trust. He's capable of putting on an affable front in public, but rarely chooses to do so, coming off as blunt and incredibly stoic. He likes people who are calm and quiet as opposed to loud and brash, which he finds annoying. How he tolerates Penelope is a mystery, but probably has something to do with being completely stuck with her for a few years. Getting through to him is a slow and arduous task, but generally sticks, and he's surprisingly good at maintaining relationships and keeping in touch with people he likes.
His sense of humor is incredibly dry, and he prefers clever, subtle humor to loud and obvious. A conversation with him is laced with metaphor and references to old literature. He often acts as Penny's emotional ballast, calming her down or preventing her from making impulsive choices. In turn, Penny keeps him from being a completely secluded, grouchy shut-in. A meeting with Kova is almost always facilitated through Penelope in some way. While usually reserved, he can become more easygoing and even playful with people he knows well.

Summary
Kova isn't entirely sure how he came to be. One day, he simply began to exist. His first few hundred years were spent wandering about, figuring out who he was and what the world was like. Eventually, he was bound for the first time by a dragon name Ra'Hago, and that dragon created the ritual that humans would use to bind him for the his entire future. As a result, Kova isn't terribly fond of most dragons. After Ra'Hago was killed, he began his long few thousand years of binding after binding, and grew disgusted and resentful with humanity.
Kova is the spirit of Shadow. At around 3000 years old, he finds himself older than most things, but much, much younger than the oldest and most powerful. He's in the spot of commanding respect from humanity and young spirits, which are just starting to reappear, but being considered a child and pitifully inexperienced by old dragons and spirits that remained after the draconic purge.
For reasons he's not entirely sure of and is perpetually angered by, binding Kova is a pitifully easy task. For as long as he can remember, he's never gone more than a few months without being bound by someone, somewhere, the situation being made worse by the fact that he doesn't need to be there to do it. Anyone can find the ritual and bind him from across the world, assuming he isn't already, and he'll be compelled to go there. Being a nearly-perpetual slave to humanity for the better part of his 3000 years, Kova is angry, jaded, and despises anyone who binds him. His disdain for humanity is unmatched and has had a long time to fester. While he's no stranger to being made to commit unsavory tasks, the last few bindings have been particularly heinous, and he's terrified to repeat the experiences or be bound to the same people again.
His given form resembles a large, shadowy fox, with a few draconic features. After finally conceding he was stuck with humans, he made himself a human form to blend in better, and settled on being male.
Design
• Kova is fat and if he's drawn skinny or muscled I will personally smite you.
• Kova always has his golden collar on. Even if he is completely nude, that collar is around his neck.t
• The mark on his forehead is a small golden diamond with two lines on either side. It represents his extra eyes that he has when not in human form. The shape has changed since some older art was made, it's no longer a teardrop shape.
• His hair is a gradient from orange to dark red. Length can vary depending on how it looks in the piece.
• Kova loves golden jewelry and the more that's drawn on him the better.
• He almost always has a tit out. It doesn't really matter which one, but one of them is probably showing no matter what he wears.
Trivia
• Kova's body temperature runs unusually warm, a little over 100 degrees. This causes mixed reactions on his insistence on being the big spoon in every relationship.
• Kova carries the scent of cloves and warm spices. He just always smells that way and cannot explain why. He does love war, spiced drinks like mulled wine and masala chai, but he's pretty sure that's not related.
• He doesn't like to fight, but if he must, he'll use a combination of shadow magic and summon a khopesh for close-range. If pressed enough, he'ss revert to his spirit form and attack with magic, claws, and teeth.
• He is incredibly wary of contracts. He will read the entirety of any kind of binding document, and if he doesn't have to sign it, he won't. He's especially wary of those writ in blood. He also has terrible handwriting, which contributes to his hesitation to sign literally anything.
• In modern AUs his guilty pleasure is Old School Runescape. He would light himself on fire if anyone knew.
• Kova loves numbers. He's incredibly good at math, and his idea of relaxation would be balancing a spreadsheet. In modern AUs, he usually has a job as an accountant, and if he's having a bad morning, someone is getting a surprise company credit card audit.

Penelope
The first Binder he had who ever respected his autonomy and treated him with respect, over time he came to enjoy her company, and the relationship slowly became a romantic one. He trusts her in a way he has never trusted anyone else, and she loves him in kind. They've been searching for a way to break Kova's curse and remove the bond from him entirely. Kova often struggles with the idea that he'll outlive her by thousands of years, and quietly seeks a way to keep her with him forever.
Percy
Initally finding Percy insufferably annoying, Kova became a bit more sympathetic after learning of the boy's history. Between that and Penelope taking an unexplainable liking to him, he eventually warmed up to Percy and became oddly protective of him. He, Penny, and Percy are in a very loose poly relationship that's mostly physical, but he still cares for Percy and would fight for him if needed.
Ephraim
Kova's distrust of dragons (for a variety of reasons) got these two off on the wrong foot immediately, but after some intervention from their respective partners, they now get along famously. They bond over having partners who are loud, outgoing, and reckless. Kova and Ephraim have a similar problem in having short-lived partners, and have often discussed it and how the other is coping (neither of them are doing it well.)
They can often be found silently drinking in close proximity to each other, and this is their favorite way to hang out. It's the only time either of them gets some peace and quiet.
Yvonne
A dragon that Kova actually hates and distrusts. These two immediately start fighting if they're in the same room, and can't seem to agree on anything. Kova knows better than to provoke her wrath, but he often comes close. They have a personal beef no one has been able to figure out.
Tyta
Despite being a spirit of similar power, Tyta makes Kova unexplainably uneasy. She seems to show up randomly to speak to him about bizarre topics and deliver cryptic messages and sayings from who-knows-where. He finds her incredibly odd and a bit annoying, but he has a strong feeling in his gut that she isn't to be trifled with. She, however, seems to enjoy his company greatly, and is always in a cheery mood when she's around him. He has no idea, but is simply grateful that she's chosen to like him.
Genesis
There is no one in the world Kova hates more than Genesis. The spirit is slightly more pwerful than he is, which annoys Kova, but on top of that he's bothersome, persistant, and decides to make anything that's Kova's business into his business. Genesis, being the spirit of light, just decided they were counterparts, a bold claim that has no basis whatsoever, and has also decided that means Genesis is superior for being Light to Shadow. Kova would throw him into a fire and not feel a hint of remorse. Even the thought of him makes Kova irritable.
