On the outside, Neo is a mischievous and easy-going young man who does not take life very seriously. He's impulsive and always on the move, cares little about social customs and always says exactly what he thinks, no matter how the other person takes it. Though this can make him seem a bit rude, his jokes and playful manners oftentimes lighten the mood quickly, and most people find him quite likable.

Meanwhile, Neo is always reading the room. Though not obvious at first, he has a lot of street smarts and is constantly analyzing the people he talks to, to find out if they are a possible threat or not. Due to his living situation, he always has to be on edge, and in truth, his world view can be quite cynical, even if he doesn't show it to others. His priority is his own well-being and little else, and though he does not like to admit it, he wants nothing more than to leave his cowardly, selfish persona behind.

Neo is an only child, and after losing their home in a fire, his parents were incredibly poor, having to work hard the entire day just to have enough money to pay for food. Their house was little more than a shack on the edge of the city walls, always exposed to the criminal underbelly of the city. They often sent little Neo up into the nicer parts of town to play, so he wouldn't have to think about their situation, but he quickly caught on anyways.

While in the upper districts, Neo was exposed to the wealth other people had, and he did not understand why they would not share it with those in need. So, he decided he would share it himself, and started pickpocketing. Thus, his life of crime began.

At first, his parents rejected the jewelry and gold pieces he brought them, but since the situation was so desperate, they started selling them for food and did not question where he got them from. At the same time, they were extremely worried for their son, especially when he got caught and came back with injuries and bruises. But Neo was too focused on his "job" to let this stop him.

Before he could reach adulthood, both of his parents passed away from simple infections, and to handle the grief, Neo joined criminal groups and increased the time he spent stealing and burglarizing homes. While his main objective still was money, he also used it as a type of revenge, blaming the upper circles for his parents' deaths. With time, he became quite integrated in the city's criminal underbelly, and even made some friends there, including a young blood mage called Seth.

One day, he, Seth, and a few others were burglarizing a home, when Seth got caught by one of the residents. Not knowing what to do, he killed the man.

Neo never resorted to anything close to murder, and he was horrified, confronting Seth. Their argument woke the man's wife, and Seth panicked. When Neo stopped him from going after the old woman, he attacked him. But before he could injure him fatally, the old woman came back with an axe, and severed Seth's arm. The blood mage fell unconscious, and got taken away by guards.

This experience changed Neo's life. Not only was he traumatised, but he also realised that the homes he had been stealing from belonged to actual people, not the evil entities he was projecting onto them. The old woman protected him from being convicted for the break in, and they became friends over their shared trauma.

Seeing how much suffering he caused, Neo decided that he wanted nothing to do with his past actions anymore. He yearned to get out of the city, and start a new life. But how could he, without any money?
