Bree was not born into slavery, but it was a near thing. He was only four when his clan was captured by marauding centaurs and sold to less-than-scrupulous slave owners. While Bree's first master, a dragonborn who also owned his parents, was a decent enough person, they did not live forever. Upon their death ownership of Bree and his family passed to their daughter, who saw kobolds as little more than livestock capable of taking orders. Usually too indifferent to be cruel, she nevertheless took special delight in tormenting shy and anxious Bree.
Change came the day Bree's mother attacked their owner in an attempt to spare her child further suffering. As punishment, the family was separated: both Bree's parents were sold, leaving Bree unprotected from a now-bitter owner. This went on for years, until Bree himself tried to put a stop to the pain. His leg was broken and left unset, and he was then sent to market as a "grist slave"--meat for ritually cannibalistic races.
Bree was purchased by a dragon, and to his disbelief, was not eaten. He was instead cared for and given a job, and is slowly learning how to function as his own person.
