Abandoned as a baby, and emotionally neglected growing up, Ash natrually developed a jaded and nihilistic view of life. She's lazy, blunt, and quick to anger but also probably the most brutally honest and relable friend you can count on. Granted, a lot of that is because she values herself so little compared to others.

"Bold of you to assume I want to live."

Early Life

As a child, Ashley would be described as happy, optimistic. She had an eagerness to learn and make friends and had a bright future ahead of her. Sadly, as an orphan with no known relatives she had nobody in her life to support her, so as she got older this outlook faded. She went through several houses, mostly run by people more interested in getting money for a good deed than her actual well being.

The closest thing she had to a friend - or any sort of emotional anchor - was Monica. A leopard cub who always happened to be in the same housing as her. Eventually though, Monica was adopted, leaving a 10-year-old Ash with nobody in the world to rely on.

Throughout her teens, Ash struggled more and more. She had no real motivation to do well in school, so frequently skipped classes or ran away from her home. She struggled with anger issues that made it increasingly difficult to find anybody to foster her for a prolonged period of time. Most teachers simply considered her a problem student that was easier to send to detention than to deal with in class - Ash spent a lot of time sitting in a corner, not allowed to talk, simply because nobody wanted to put effort into helping her get better. Eventually she realised that attempts to act out for attention rarely got anywhere, and seemed to ‘mellow out’.

Ash had better luck with friends in her teens. Her 'best friend' was an Afgan Hound, Alfie, who was on a similar tier of trouble-makership and would go on to be involved in illegal activities. Alfie didn't care for her wellbeing, which suited her just. Ash also attended school alongside Warren, Monica, Terri and Vernon, though she wasn't particularly close to most of them until after they left school.

Ash's school records would note that she was a bright student, excelling on the few occasions she put the effort in. She probably would have been quite successful if she had only received the support, guidance and motivation she needed.

Post-Home

Shortly after turning 18, Ash packed her backs and set off onto the streets, informally leaving school and the place she was living at the time. Nobody cared.

Over the next couple of years, she hopped between shelters, people's sofas, and eventually roadsides. She primarily got by by accepting, as she put it, 'odd jobs' which generally involved sleeping with various people. Despite being a fairly sketchy position, Ash accepted it and considers it no different from a regular job, often wondering why most people don't charge for sex. (The fact the got to sleep in a warm bed from time to time was a bonus.)

It could be argued that her willingness to sell her body stemmed from self-loathing and a belief that it was all she was worth. Which is kind of true, but at the end of the day, she enjoyed it. Enjoyed it more than working some minimum-wage corporate job, at least.

One partially cold winter, Ash got increasingly ill and was unable to find anywhere to stay. Eventually Warren - a deer friend from high school - found her frozen half to death on the side of the road. His family had recently moved out, so with a spare room in his apartment he invited Ash to live with him.

Ash was reluctant to impose, worrying that she would drag him down with her, but wasn't in a position to refuse. He gave her a place to stay as she recovered, then she left, came back, and ended up staying with him on-and-off over the next few months. Eventually she started paying Warren back when she could so he didn't have to rent out the room, then later realised she had essentially started paying rent. Warren finally convinced her to live with him.
