Ithric

Ithric is a playable character that appears in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Ithric is a student at the Officer's Academy who hails from the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus and is a member of the Blue Lions. He is 20 at the start of the game. Underneath this disguise however is an Agarthan spy by the name of Cleobulus whose ties are to Those Who Slither in the Dark.

Profile

Early Life

In Imperial Year 1160, Cleobulus is born in Shambhala, a city hidden underground that remains the last refuge of the Agarthans. His mother may as well have never existed, for no records ever remained of her, nor did she ever receive any mention. As for his father, the boy was taught only to refer to him as "Anacharsis" or "sir." Anacharsis spoke of a world that seemed foreign to him, an unforgiving world with an unforgiving goddess that forced the Agarthans into a shameful, cowering existence. The Agarthans were oppressed for having power that had begun to rival that of the false goddess's, a goddess who was afraid of losing the grip she held over the world and its people. The children of the goddess, as well as her followers, had to be slain so that the Agarthans could return to the surface.

Therefore, Cleobulus was quickly made aware of the purpose of his existence. He was to infiltrate among the ranks of their oppressors, and when the time was right, he would aid in the battle to destroy the goddess. Anacharsis had tried to put others to the task prior, but each and every one failed. Cleobulus was their "last hope." He felt honored to be part of a liberating movement and followed every instruction Anacharsis gave perfectly. He was trained to be the perfect assassin, and then, was educated in what the world outside of Shambhala looked like. How it operated, the cultures that existed, the various political relations. The "world" was Fodlan, and Cleobulus had to study it well before being permitted to hide amongst them, for any slip-up could be detrimental to the mission. So Cleobulus hid away and pored over the stolen texts for hours, tracing his pale purple fingers over every word, every visual. He wondered what the sun would feel like upon his skin, what sort of sound the lyre would make, what a lemon would taste like on his tongue. Curiosity of the outside world had him dreaming up his own version of the outside, of Fodlan, until the day Anacharsis decided he was ready.

In Imperial Year 1170, it is decided. For all his hard work, Anacharsis permits Cleobulus to choose the name of his own alias, and from that point onward, Cleobulus would be known as "Ithric." This is the only thing he is allowed to pick out, for his false background is already prepared for him. He memorizes it: a plague had ravaged the Kingdom of Faerghus and left him orphaned. In all her mercy, an ally to their cause, "Cornelia Arnim," happened upon him and took him under her wing. He would be in training to be the next court mage in the capital, Fhirdiad. There, he would meet his first major target, crown prince Dimitri. Anacharsis says they will remain in contact through Cornelia and that he is to only act upon orders. He reminds Cleobulus to stay vigilant with his disguise, and more importantly, to do him proud. Should he fail like his predecessors, he would not hesitate to be rid of him. "Gain their trust," he says, "and use it to your advantage. They will all die in the end either way."

So that's what he did. He referred to Cornelia as his mother. He accepted condolences paid to deceased parents that did not exist. He enrolled into Fhirdiad's School of Sorcery and crafted friendships, his first connections within the kingdom. When he met King Lambert and his son, Dimitri, he showed the utmost respect. He ate their food and spoke in their tongues. It seemed that he was able to seamlessly integrate and none were the wiser. What he hadn't expected was how trusting these people were, nor how much Dimitri enjoyed his company. The boy had a tendency to laugh at unfunny jokes, which were all Ithric could provide. Was it the deadpan delivery of the punchline? He would never know, but what he did know was that he felt something akin to pride that endeared him to the prince's smile. He was then introduced to the prince's other friends: Ingrid of Galatea, Sylvain of Gautier, and Felix of Fraldarius.

Ithric was quick to make notes on them, as well as how to make a good impression. Ingrid was set to be wed to Felix's brother, Glenn, a knight whom she admired. Deepening their bond was simple: she already had respect for his work ethic, but additionally, he found that sneaking out extra food from the kitchen for her using space warping magic granted him what she called "brownie points." Felix, although sour in temperament, warmed up at the mention of his brother, swelling with confidence. He had a competitive streak even in their games, so Ithric made sure never to go too hard nor too easy on him. Sylvain was a bit more complicated. Already a flirt at a young age, Ithric had no plans to condone distasteful behavior, which might ruin his own reputation. He would join the other three in lightly chiding the boy, but made note to continue observations. There might be more than what meets the eye. Whereas Felix spoke highly and often of his elder brother, Sylvain never mentioned the other Gautier. He decides he'll get the chance to investigate further in the near future, more out of personal curiosity rather than thinking this information would prove useful in his mission.

Cornelia was impressed with how quickly he had gained the trust of every notable person with a position of power in Faerghus, but it was not enough. The next step would be to infiltrate the Knights and cause unrest. She hinted at how important this task was to continue their progress, how it would not only take out King Lambert but also push the Kingdom into a war with long-lasting effects. A new king would cause instability, especially one who would live in the shadow of King Lambert. However, not just anyone could join the Knights, let alone the trusted circle the king kept around him. Ithric needed more than just his magic training: he needed to learn how to ride a beast, in this case a horse, and fight on one too. Where else could he obtain this training than House Gautier, which boasted the Kingdom's finest cavalry? With haste, she sent a letter of request to the Margrave to take in her son and prepare him for knighthood, to which he accepted with only minimal hesitance. Sylvain was ecstatic with the news that his friend from the capital would be living with him and helped his parents prepare the room he'd be staying in. A feast was prepared for him on the date of his arrival, and Ithric was finally formally introduced to the Gautier family: the Margrave, his wife, and Sylvain's older brother—Miklan.

It ended up being Miklan whom Ithric sought out for training. From his observations, he found the man, in spite of his sour disposition, extremely talented. More importantly, he was skilled due to practice and discipline, having not inherited a Crest. He'd benefit most from a teacher with a work ethic that rivalled his own, one who wasn't born with an advantage. The problem was actually getting the man to agree. He scoffed at Ithric's request time after time, mocking his "dainty hands" at best and shoving him to the ground at worst. It was Ithric's persistence that finally started to break his resolve, and he finally agrees to take him on as a student, but "only if you follow exactly what I say." To Ithric this was a simple caveat to be expected. Through their sparring sessions, he slowly started to understand the man better, and more importantly, why exactly Sylvain would have been hesitant to talk about him. Quick to anger, hard-headed, derogatory, condescending... The man left a lot to be desired. And yet, he found himself enjoying the man's company, much to the younger brother's dismay. It was a win-win: Ithric found friendship in someone who was not actively a target he was supposed to manipulate, and he was able to now compete with other soldiers in the cavalry. He was ready for the next step of the mission.

Upon his return to Fhirdiad, he is able to join the knights. Due to his close friendship with his son, King Lambert shows Ithric much favor and trust. The two are quite alike in many respects. They both cared deeply about their people and showed a great concern with justice and doing what was "right." This bodes well for what he is tasked with: siphoning intel to Cornelia concerning the king's movements and the knights, and suggesting plans of action that would benefit TWSITD. He reports wherever the king goes and with whom whenever he ventured outside the castle, being able to write quick letters and hand-drawn maps that would be transported right at his mother's desk. They wait for the opportune moment, when the king leaves for Duscur—a trip he would never return from. As Ithric sends the list of the total count of knights accompanying the royal family and the path the company was taking, he feels himself grow sick at the thought of little prince Dimitri being part of the body count. He thinks of the people of Duscur, the people who would become scapegoats to a crime they never committed, and what the Kingdom would do in retaliation. The thought makes him ill, and before waiting to hear the outcome of what he has contributed to, he uses magic to return to Margrave Gautier's land without reporting his whereabouts to his "mother."

Ignorance would have been bliss, but he was not awarded this luxury. Sylvain breaks the news to him: all were murdered but the Crown Prince, and Ithric thinks this was the worst possible outcome. To be alive, to witness all the carnage... Try as he might to remind himself that these were the goddess's people, the goddess who shunned his own people, all he can think of is how forsaken these people are. He is grateful that he can sit in total silence with Miklan without having to speak. He's not sure he could voice any single one of his thoughts, but if he could, it would be to him, the despicable man who'd never turn him away. There are times he had come close to telling him the truth, but when he finally feels confident enough to do so, Miklan is gone. Because of the war of attrition now being raged against Duscur, the Margrave had sent his son in his stead to represent him, to fight in solidarity, since the Sreng border could not be left unattended and only one who could wield the Lance of Ruin could guard it. Naively thinking he would be able to spend time with him afterwards, he remained until Miklan had returned, only for him to be disinherited merely a year after the Tragedy of Duscur, so their time together was brief and cut short bitterly.

In Imperial Year 1177, he reappears in Fhirdiad. He is greeted by Dimitri with a warm embrace, much to his own shock. There was no logical way the prince could have known about Ithric's involvement in what happened, but Ithric had feared it nonetheless, paranoid due to... some strange feeling. That feeling returned hundredfold now as he returned Dimitri's embrace. "I missed you," he had said, body trembling. Ithric was speechless as something heavy tore at his own guts. Guilt. That's what the feeling was. He recalls Dimitri's endearing smile, how the boy's laughter was something he had cherished. And now his people's blood was on his hands. Against his better judgement, he remains in Fhirdiad by Dimitri's side, having been made to promise not to leave him alone again. Wherever the prince was, Ithric would be only a few steps away. It stayed that way until it was time for Dimitri and his friends to attend classes at Garreg Mach Monastery, in which Cornelia relays a new set of tasks for him: he was to join their class and await further instruction from Anacharsis, who would be meeting him there.

Academy Phase

Ithric enrolls in Garreg Mach Monastery Officers Academy in Imperial Year 1180 and joins the Blue Lions. Dimitri is the house leader, and their childhood friends (Sylvain, Felix, and Ingrid) join alongside them. Here, Ithric comes into contact with Nathaniel Sotton, a Seiros Knight who is actually Anacharsis in disguise. Now under intense scrutiny by both his father and the Nabateans who run the monastery, Ithric has to navigate very carefully and step up his performance to avoid suspicion. When first meeting Professor Byleth he behaves nonchalant, remarking neither on their age or their status, or lack thereof, within the Church. It is not until Byleth is able to wield the Sword of the Creator that his interest is piqued, meaning that C-support is locked until Chapter 4.

In general, Ithric is very distant from his peers. He tends to be standing off on his own, save for the few times you'll find Sylvain bothering him or Nathaniel participating in a hushed conversation with him. Interesting to note is that Nathaniel Sotton can be interacted with as an NPC while the player explores the monastery every month, and occasionally can be found standing next to Ithric in certain locations, such as the library. Ithric's recruitment requirements are Reason and Charisma.

As the story progresses, Ithric's ambivalent attitude and apathy begin to deteriorate. One of the first and only scenes where there is a crack in his uncaring shell is before, during, and after the assault on the Tower of Black Winds. He seems to show hesitance about facing off against Miklan Gautier, asking Byleth how they feel about those who feel compelled or forced into a life of thievery. He idly wonders if it would be possible to persuade the bandit leader to give up the Lance of Ruin and search for an alternative to the church's method of execution. Before Byleth can respond, he shakes his head and insists he is just rambling nonsense. En route to the tower, Dimitri speaks very lowly of Miklan and Ithric watches silently, expression unreadable. Though he does not deny that Miklan has done terrible things, he feels something akin to sympathy for him, and will relay this to Byleth when it is just the two of them, asking if it would be possible to handle the situation without ending the man's life. If Byleth agrees, Ithric will appear visibly relieved and thank them, but if Byleth disagrees, Ithric's affection will decrease, though he'll verbally assent to what must come next.

When facing Ithric in combat, Miklan will be momentarily speechless, before reminiscing on their days of training together. Thinking aloud, he ponders whether or not Ithric had gotten any stronger. Ithric, exhibiting a rare smile, states that he was never able to beat him back then. If Byleth had agreed in their prior discussion before the battle, Ithric will attempt to persuade Miklan to turn in the lance after defeating him. Otherwise, the game continues as normal, with Miklan unable to harness the Lance of Ruin's power and becoming a monster. After slaying the Black Beast, Ithric will have a forlorn look as he says a final goodbye to his friend.

Concerning the Tomas and Monica arcs, Ithric is strangely silent, considering the man's penchant for speculating his curiosities with his professor. After Jeralt's death, he can only manage an "I'm sorry" to the grieving Byleth, but the downcast expression he wears is genuine; he truly does feel sorry for their loss. He is grappling with the continued effects of what his organization has done to the people of Fodlan while also observing how the people around him react to the feelings of betrayal. As a traitor himself, he feels at a loss of what to do. It is because of these conflicting feelings that Byleth, with high enough affection points, can now unlock his B-support conversations, where he seeks out answers to "hypothetical" questions. This support chain is important, as it lays out the foundation for Ithric's character arc.

What happens next is based on Byleth's actions, including which house Ithric is recruited into and how far in the support chain they get before Part II occurs. Regardless of what occurs, Ithric's cover is blown and his true appearance and identity becomes known.

  • If Byleth does not achieve B+ support with Ithric before the Fall of Garreg Mach: Ithric is too fearful to turn against his father and TWSITD, so he continues with the original mission he was given by Anacharsis. During the attack on the monastery, he helps Anacharsis and Thales attack Rhea as well as his fellow classmates. Afterwards, he disappears with the Agarthans and becomes an enemy unit in future routes.
  • If Byleth does achieve B+ support with Ithric before the Fall of Garreg Mach: Ithric is given hope through the Fell Star via Byleth, quite ironically considering his prior disposition concerning the goddess. Feeling emboldened in his newfound faith, Ithric betrays his father, facing off against him and preventing him and his Agarthan mages from harming the retreating students. In the process, his true identity as Cleobulus is revealed, and although he managed to save his classmates from Anacharsis's attack and give them the opportunity to flee with their lives, he is defeated by his father and teleported away from the monastery.

War Phase

Over the five years Byleth was missing, Ithric was taken back to Shambhala by Anacharsis. Here, Ithric's blood is harvested and used in Agarthan experiments conducted by his father in order to not "waste" his potential. If Ithric was taken by force (i.e. if Byleth had achieved B+ support with him, and has chosen the Azure Moon or Verdant Wind routes), Anacharsis complains about needing another successor and wonders why each successive generation was more of a failure than the last. During this time, he creates a winged wyvern as an experimental beast he could unleash against the monastery, utilizing his son's powerful blood to create it. Making the most of a bad situation, Ithric befriends this beast made of his own flesh and blood and plans an escape for the both of them, not wanting to break his promise of meeting with his classmates once more. Whether or not they'd want him there, he must show up out of obligation.

If Byleth satisfied the condition of attaining a B support with Ithric before the War Phase, Ithric, now with the name Cleobulus, will show up at the monastery's ruins to fulfill his promise to meet there again. He will always show up last, warping in with magic. After the fight, what happens depends on the selected path Byleth chose.

When he joins your roster, do note that his class has been automatically changed to a unique class: Malig Knight. His mount is the wyvern beast he escaped with.

Joining the fight alongside Edelgard provides Cleobulus with a lowkey way of working against TWSITD, returning to his roots of infiltration and quiet sabotage. From the Agarthan perspective, they are working with the Empire, therefore, Cleobulus is still working within the confines of the organization. However, he is aware of how their uneasy affiliation is merely a temporary measure, as their goals will eventually conflict beyond the shared goal of destroying the Church and the Nabateans who operate it. During the attack on Garreg Mach, he fights alongside the Black Eagle students, but still ends up having to return to Shambhala with Anacharsis who "politely" requests his audience. Since he is still operating under the pretense of working under him, as now his betrayal is insidious rather than overt, he cannot decline. Unfortunately, this causes Hubert and Edelgard to grow suspicious of the Agarthan, uncertain of his true intentions and whether or not his ties are with them or TWSITD.

However, since he goes to Shambhala willingly, he is free to leave shortly after Anacharsis completes his experimental beast. This gives him ample time to support Edelgard and the Black Eagle Strike Force in the war efforts even before Byleth's return in Imperial Year 1185. He does not seem shocked at all at Byleth's return, having had faith that the Fell Star's vessel would return so that victory would be assured.

At the siege of Arianrhod, Cleobulus can finally face off against Cornelia, proving his true allegiance to Edelgard and Byleth's cause. Cornelia has some choice words for this traitor, hinting that retaliation was on its way. This has Cleobulus concerned, realizing what the Agarthans were going to unleash upon the city. He says nothing as Edelgard and Hubert lie about the source of the javelins of light that flattened Arianrhod.

On the way to Fhirdiad, the Imperial Forces are stopped by Dimitri's interception. Cleobulus expresses regret at Dimitri's state, feeling partially—if not totally—responsible for contributing to Thales's plot. Cleobulus has special dialogue if sent to fight against his childhood friends: Dimitri, Sylvain, Ingrid, and Felix. In each case, he acknowledges having betrayed them twice each, once for TWSITD and once for the Empire. Although not religious, he hopes that they wake up somewhere better. He cannot stay and mourn: he must prepare for the battle against Rhea, whom he's longed to bring down for years.

The Black Eagle Strike force arrives at Fhirdiad, and although Cleobulus has kept up glamor magic to hide his appearance, he removes it for this battle. He wants Seiros to experience defeat at the hands of an Agarthan, even if that Agarthan is no longer affiliated with the revenge of TWSITD. After the Empire emerges victorious, Cleobulus' path diverges; if he has no paired end card in Crimson Flower, he is assassinated by Hubert under the false assumption that his ties are still to TWSITD. Otherwise, he survives and helps wage the silent war against the organization, being able to offer all the intel and whereabouts of his once-compatriots. When the fighting is all done, he can finally rest and live his life doing what he's always dreamed of: exploring the unknown.

Cleobulus arrives at the monastery on the back of a wyvern and aids in the dispelling of the bandits who now ransacked Garreg Mach. Afterwards, he dismounts his beast to face his childhood friends, removing his glamor magic and appearing in his true form before his classmates. Dimitri retrieves his spear from one of the bandit's corpses and moves in on him, business end of the lance pointing at his throat. He permits Cleobulus to speak what would possibly become his last words. Not at all surprised at this cold reception, Cleoblus assuages his antsy mount with a pat on the snout before replying, choosing his words carefully. He sought atonement, pledging to help Dimitri obtain his revenge, and promising that when Edelgard fell, he'd allow the fallen prince to take his life as the final act of redemption, to right his wrongs. Dimitri agrees with his preposition at the behest of the professor and takes leave at once, not wishing to bask any longer in the presence of the traitor. At his departure, Cleobulus' glamor returns, concealing his grey-purple skin. It was better to not shock those in the monastery who still were unaware of the truth after all.

Leaving Byleth and the rest of his class behind with Cleobulus, the other Blue Lions have varying reactions. Mercedes and Annette are quicker than the others to instill their trust in him once more, believing that his return was proof of where his true loyalties lies. Felix is business as usual, having kept the man at an arm's length for most of his childhood as well. Sylvain will crack inopportune jokes to lighten the mood, but ultimately still holds "Cleo" in a friendly regard. Ingrid needs time to work out her feelings and come to terms with it. Cleobulus' support chains with his classmates iron out these complexities that have arisen due to his reveal as an Agarthan.

True to his word, he aids Dimitri wholeheartedly, only occasionally showing concern at the man's insatiable bloodlust. However, knowing he was in no position to pass judgement, he does not ever confront the prince about it, only ever musing to himself or the professor. He seems certain that he will die at the end of this path and has made peace with it, so long as his death offers peace to King Lambert's son. After reuniting with Dedue and Rodrigue's sacrifice, Dimitri's new course of action has them return to the Kingdom to reclaim his birthright from Cornelia's grasp. Cleobulus is able to warn the party in advance about the Titanus that she would likely deploy, and the Kindom's Loyalists descend upon the capital, attaining victory after a long hard battle. If Cleobulus challenges Cornelia, she informs him that Anacharsis had given the order to kill him on sight. This draws out a scoff from him, before he admits that he had always dreamed of being able to kill her himself.

Afterwards, their sights return with focus on the Empire. Before the final battle in the Imperial Capital, Cleobulus finds Dimitri alone. He asks if it was alright if he could approach him and the king laughs sadly, wondering aloud if he had truly become the kind of person people would need permission to speak to. Cleobulus stands at his side and looks up at him with hesitation, trying to gauge what Dimitri could be thinking, knowing that he would now have to face Edelgard. He reminds Dimitri of the vow he had made in the ruins of the monastery, telling him that he had no qualms about dying and that he was ready to pay the price of all he has done. A hush falls upon them as they look ahead at the looming walls before them. Then Dimitri shakes his head. "I will not kill you, I have too much blood on my hands already."

After Edelgard is defeated, although the Kingdom rejoices in a unified Fodlan under Dimitri's leadership, Cleobulus prepares for battle shortly after once again, wishing to hunt down the stragglers that remained of TWSITD, including his father. He does not wish to waste the second chance at life that he was given by King Dimitri. Variations of this ending occur based on certain paired ending cards.

Verdant Wind

djN86Vc.png"Just a minute! The following section contains spoilers, viewing it will cost a lot. Are you prepared to pay for it?"

   ]

After escaping Shambhala and arriving at Garreg Mach, Cleobulus reunites with the Golden Deer class. He is taken aback by the unexpected warm reception, though shakes his head with a knowing laugh at all of the questions Claude barrages him with. Of course Claude was excited to welcome him back: Cleobulus' existence, his Agarthan blood, was one piece in the giant puzzle that was Fodlan's dark history, and Claude wanted answers. "In due time," he promises, truly wishing to help the Alliance leader find out the truth of all things. But first, there is a war to fight.

Claude's tactics are a success, resulting in the unification of the Alliance once more and the victory over the Empire's forces. Only now can they turn their attention to TWSITD, and with his own freedom just around the corner, Cleobulus is more enthusiastic than ever to divulge any information that would aid in their fight. He and Claude work together with Byleth to formulate a plan before heading out to Shambhala. Cleobulus can hit two birds with one stone here: he can kill his father, Anacharsis, as well as dissolve the entire faction after killing their leader, Thales. The former is mildly irritated at his best experiment becoming such a colossal failure, whereas the latter is angry that one of their own kind could work together with "lowly beasts." Cleobulus pays no heed to the ramblings of those who cowered in the dark, knowing they were just on the cusp of defeat. However, Nemesis was a surprise that was unbeknownst to even Cleobulus, a well-kept secret that only higher ranking members of the organization were aware of.

The Alliance Army intercepts Nemesis and his Elites at the Caledonian Plateau, where Cleobulus hopes that this will truly be the end of the Agarthan's legacy. When meeting Nemesis in combat, he promises to give "Thales's puppet" a swift death so that he may finally rest his weary bones. After Byleth and Claude defeat him, Fodlan is unified, but Claude's work is nowhere near finished as he plans to head out to Almyra to establish new ties. Cleobulus, on the other hand, finally can wash his hands of his mission to destroy TWSITD, and realizes with a startle that he is now free to pursue whatever he wants. The specifics of what he desires varies, but the heart of it is the same: to see the outside world. Because of the new policies Claude and Byleth create together, there could not be any time where this desire to travel the world and satisfy his curiosity would be easier, and he owes it all to the pair that instilled hope in him.

Silver Snow

djN86Vc.png"Just a minute! The following section contains spoilers, viewing it will cost a lot. Are you prepared to pay for it?"

   ]

There is no Silver Snow route for Cleobulus. If Byleth chooses to side with the Church, he will take his leave with Edelgard and Hubert from the Holy Tombs and become an enemy unit later in the storyline when facing against TWSITD in Shambhala. This is in part due to his general disdain towards the Nabateans, especially towards Seiros. He believes they would never allow him to live in freedom. Ultimately, he dies in this route during the attack on Shambhala.

Personality

Having been raised as an assassin who was to infiltrate not only the Kingdom of Faerghus but also Fodlan in its entirety, Ithric's mannerisms are entirely manufactured, thus making him appear to be just human enough; passable for the masses, but strange under scrutiny of socialites. It is as though he had studied how to be normal in theory, but in practice, he falls short and becomes something more adjacent and awkward. Social cues are understood with a slight delay: he'll stare at one's extended hand for a solid second before taking it in his own and giving a firm shake, he'll chuckle at a joke after everyone else has already shared in the mirth of another's humor and moved ahead in conversation. Most of his peers would probably chalk this "weird" behavior up to the expected longstanding effects of having lost his parents at a young age due to plague, but because this is a fabrication, it does not stand as an explanation. It is no surprise that reading books on human behavior and mimicking what he observes cannot make up for the gap of his formative years, alone in the cold underground darkness of Shambhala.

His observant nature is not only due to his need to copy what he sees to fit in, but is also in part because of his insatiable curiosity. Thirsty for knowledge of all sorts, Ithric enjoys visits to the library, people-watching, and listening to stories that others tell. Whether it is a Seiros Knight recalling a hunting expedition or a merchant in the marketplace recounting his treacherous seafaring adventure, Ithric lives for the thrill of the unknown. He holds on tight to a secret longing, to travel the world and experience all the things he was deprived of back home. Should he dare to even dream of a world where he is not bound by TWSITD and their mission, he imagines himself living freely among all sorts of people. Fodlan is not enough when there is so much more beyond its borders. But so long as Anacharsis lives and breathes down his neck, he relents to the pragmatic fear of consequences, of death, where his dreams would die with him.

This consistent return to a baseline pragmatism results in Ithric coming off as cold and uncaring. Seeking out hope and optimism from a man with so little to hope and be optimistic for leaves much to be desired. He is both flat and blunt in his line delivery, and he avoids verbosity, making for a hard conversation partner. He has reservations of saying too much: saying too much can give himself away, saying too much is the tactic of a liar. With hardly any expression changes, it can be near impossible to tell how he is feeling in the moment. To top this all off, he is also distant physically, tending to avoid contact and preferring to be on his own. For the perseverant, however, Ithric can open up the more often he is approached, for as much as he tries to remind himself not to get close with anyone or form any attachments, he truly does come to care for others. He does not only learn interesting tidbits from the people he observes; he also learns empathy and what love feels like. He learns what hope is when Byleth, against all odds, can protect their students from harm time and time again. Deep down, even if he is forced to go ahead with betraying his classmates, he feels as though his time with them was valuable, and he'd never give that up for anything. If he winds up becoming an enemy to Byleth and his peers, he shares this sentiment before battle.

Overall

In comparison to the other magic-centric units in the game, Ithric fares well. He is meant to be utilized as a hard and heavy magic hitter, which is why his speed growth is not as high as some of his other contemporaries, such as Lysithea or Hubert. As such, he will not likely be hitting enemies for double in late-game, but the Waste magic spell unlocked at skill level B offsets this by behaving as a magical equivalent to a Brave weapon. He also will not be a critical hit machine in the same way Dorothea is. In this sense, he is a consistent high damage output unit who doesn't have to rely on gimmicks. It should be noted that he only has access to two white magic spells, one for healing and one for utility, so he cannot function as a dual DPS/healer unit. It will be difficult to progress through the Faith line as well, as he is at a disadvantage for it.

As a physical fighter, it is recommended not to class him into a unit that must absorb or tank damage, as his HP stat growth is abysmal. Keeping his total HP stat low makes proc'ing his special personal ability, Blood Arts, easy, but makes him a poor choice for a bulky damage sink. It should be noted that he has a proficiency in Lances and a budding talent in flying, which means that it is possible to class him into a Wyvern Lord. With investment into Riding, he can also make a good Dark Knight as well. The unique class that Ithric unlocks during the War Phase however is the best possible class for him, as the strength bonus will expand his utility to be a hard physical hitter as well, whether wielding a lance, axe, or sword, without taking away his magic. Whether the foe is high in resistance or defense, the Malig Knight is equipped to handle the threat. The added mobility also means he can stay out of dangerous positions.

Cleobulus and Claude (Verdant Wind)

With Fodlan safely tucked into Byleth's capable hands, Claude packs for Almyra, but is surprised when he finds Cleobulus waiting for him at the border with his own meager belongings. Claude reminds the other that he is free to do whatever he wishes now, and Cleobulus, deadpan, replies that this is exactly what he was there to do. Unable to argue with that logic, the two fly into Almyra together, and while he had heard stories of the land from Claude prior to visiting, it was truly a different lived experience for the awed Agarthan. Cleobulus wishes he could stay here forever, and Claude says he could have that arranged, then surprises him by officially making Cleobulus his retainer. Given a new purpose, Cleobulus spends his life fighting to make Claude's far-fetched dream a reality across all seven seas. It is said that no King and Retainer could replicate the way these two could read each other's minds, nor the way they would tease each other relentlessly.

Cleobulus and Lysithea

After the war, the unlikely duo set off to work to finish cleaning up the leftover remains of TWSITD, following the trail of prior leads Cleobulus retained concerning the remaining members sprinkled across Fodlan. Unknown to Lysithea was Cleobulus' secondary intention: using Anacharsis' research notes and a collection of Agarthan blood to undo the Crest experiments done to her. He wished to reverse all the damage that the organization he contributed to had caused and figured this was a necessary logical conclusion, and when he finally presents her with the idea he had been mulling over, she'd deny having cried in his arms. With Anacharsis' notes to guide him, the experiment is a success, unburdening Lysithea from a shortened lifespan. Able to live life to her full potential now, they go separate ways, with Lysithea returning to her family and Cleobulus fulfilling his dream of exploring what the world has to offer. He sends her many trinkets and gifts from faraway lands, and in return, she promises to treat him with a cake or two when he returns home.

Cleobulus and Asad

Exhausted by the war efforts, including all that must be done now that the fighting is over, Cleobulus wonders if he'll ever get to leave Fodlan and set sail for new worlds. Sothis answers his prayers in the strangest way, in the form of Asad kidnapping his Agarthan friend in his sleep. Cleobulus awakes onboard the Scarlet Sails' pirate ship and is made an "honorary member" on the spot. Though this wasn't how he had planned his journey around the world, he is ingratiated to his redhead friend, his captain, and keeps a log of their travels, extending multiple volumes. Asad is true to his word and shows Cleobulus the world, leaving not a single piece of land or sea unexplored in their long lives. Long after their deaths, decades after the Scarlet Sails no longer roamed the seas, Cleobulus' writings of their pirate adventures is discovered, full of tales so ridiculous and unbelievable that the Scarlet Sails become legend, never truly dying.

Etymology

Cleobulus is the romanized version of the Greek name Κλεόβουλος, combining the Greek words of "glory" and "counsel/advice" or "will/determination." Cleobulus of Lindos is one of the Seven Sages of Greece and was a poet. Arnim is a German surname meaning "universal." Ithric is a fantasy name without an origin or meaning, but was loosely inspired by "Sihtric," which is an Anglo-Saxon name for a king.

Trivia

  • Ithric's playlist is a mix of somber, melancholic classical tunes which become more distorted over time, finally devolving into the unique dubstep sounds that the Agarthans are given in the game's soundtrack.
  • He stands at 5'7" and does not get taller after the timeskip.
  • Ithric's English VA, Jacob Craner, also voices Rath in Fire Emblem Heroes. His Japanese VA, Takahiro Sakurai, also voices Eliwood, Lukas, and Julius in Fire Emblem Heroes, and Lukas in Fire Emblem: Shadows of Valentia.
  • Hapi and Sylvain both refer to Cleobulus as 'Cleo' after his true identity is revealed. Other characters refuse to cease calling him by Ithric, including Claude, who makes a point of asking Ithric which name he'd prefer, then settles on Ithric due to the latter's impartiality.
  • Despite the blood experiments performed on him from before he was even birthed, he does not possess a crest. Anacharsis focused more on increasing the latent potency of the boy's blood to perform higher level castings of forbidden dark magic, creating a never-ending body of fuel for his continued experiments on mutations and beasts. This resulted in Ithric's special personal ability, Blood Arts.
  • Looking at the list of his supports that result in a romantic ending (Sylvain, Miklan, Ferdinand, Faeron, Asad, Hapi), it can be concluded that Ithric seems to have an affinity for redheads. Dimitri is an outlier.
