About
She was born a monster and even though her monstery qualities went away during puberty that stuck with her. Marta struggles between craving normality and embracing her strangeness. She wants to fit in as much as she wants to be happy being herself.
She marries her weird best friend because they're both weird and resentful of the world and make each other happy, but love is not enough to make that relationship work and they're divorced within the year.
She marries a nice mediocre guy that her parents like, because following her gut didn't make her happy so she may as well do what she's 'supposed' to do. Buy a house. Start a family(twins!). She's waiting for the happiness to kick in. Any minute now.
Resentment bubbles over, she needs a break, she can't deal with these damn kids, she hasn't slept in a week and she just wants a moment of peace-
She goes out into the night, she hears music and follows the lights and she's drinking and there's a friendly face who doesn't judge her when she admits for the first time out loud that she regrets having children and they dance and everything blurs together and when she returns home it's been twenty years.
Her kids have grown and left, her husband has grieved and moved on, decades she doesn't remember are etched into her skin, and for the first time in her life she lives alone.

She manages to be the most sociable person in town despite an intense fear of leaving her house. She's always hosting parties and little get-togethers to draw people in and hoping nobody notices she never goes out.
Personality & Outlook
Fun-loving party girl, though she's toned it down a lot since she's gotten older & more anxious. Really into planning events & being the center of attention. Wine mom.
Can not handle tension of any kind, half of her personality is deflecting sensitive subjects and any serious conversation you start with her is gonna end up a discussion about interior decorating trends before you even know she's led you off topic.
Totally nonconfrontational & extremely forgiving, just because she doesn't want to carry around the kind of stress that holding a grudge can cause(maybe when she was younger she could do it but it just doesn't feel good to be angry anymore so she opts out).

Trauma Buddy™. It's done entirely in the form of shitty jokes but he's the only person she can really talk to about things that Aren't Great.
Maverick [ex husband]
Things did not end great at all but they're awkwardly trying to rebuild a friendship after many years of avoiding each other(and then her disappearing & reappearing). Now he's dating her boyfriend or something and that's.....something. She wants to be worried but is also aggressively sticking to her 'no grudges' resolution.
Despite being generally beloved by all in her adult life, she was pretty outcast in her childhood due to being born with 'monstrous' features(weirdly, puberty un-monstered her), and her friendship with Maverick was built on the kinship of both being weird, goth kids.
Kenny [boyfriend's kid]
Gale's daughter who is simultaneously a delight and exhausting to be around. Marta doesn't know how someone this angry and stubborn could come out of Gale, but Gale is so happy to see her stand up for herself so Marta doesn't try to interfere. Weirdly feels more of a connection to Kenny than her own blood kids & feels guilty about it.
Adrian [son]
She disappeared during his childhood & has rarely seen him since her return & things are weird. He writes her sometimes? It's cryptic & sometimes feels full of things you maybe shouldn't tell your mother but Marta appreciates it.
Yvette [daughter]
She disappeared during Yvette's childhood & has rarely seen her since her return & things are weird. Yvette doesn't seem to be as excited about Marta's return as Adrian is.
Tobias [replacement]
The new librarian, she just wanted to meet the person who took over after she disappeared. She invites him to book club to get to know him and he seems like a mess but he tends to be surrounded by the Good Drama.

Everyone else in town, in one way or another, has some kind of relationship with Marta. (including actual non-background characters but i got tired of writing blurbs for every individual)
